The USC-Upstate Post Game Report

Great rebounding numbers, good to see him stay out of foul trouble. But 17pts on 17 attempts is far from good. Thats 1pt per attempt, factor in a average big fg% and fts, a good number would be between 1.3-1.4pts per attempt.

Efficient PPP is 1.0, that's exactly what Stokes was.

Our offense as a team was 1.17 PPP, anything over 1 is typically considered good.

Our guys need to get more physical as big as we are we should be dominating the paint. Its to early to tell but as of right now it don't look like we will be dancing this yr. Hopefully we start picking it up as the season goes on if we don't Conzo has got to go.

Say what?

Upstate is a good team... They'll do work this year in their conference. Torrey is an NBA prospect. Ty Greene is a sniper from 3... I think they'll have a great season.

Thats per possession not attempts, big difference. Ftr Stokes had 163pts on 118att or 1.38 pts per attempt his freshman year, he had 408pts on 282 attempts or 1.45pts per attempt as a sophomore. So actually 17 on 17 is a bad number for him.

It's not "bad". It's not great, or his best, but it's not what's considered inefficient offense.

You've got to understand that this is college basketball. Playing a close game with a team of perceived quality as low as USC Upstate isn't that big of a deal. MSU beat UK then struggled against Columbia. Wichita State struggled against Tennessee State. North Carolina barely survived Holy Cross! The gap between good teams and "bad" teams isn't very large.

A win is a win. I'll take it.

Exactly! College basketball has some really good cinderella teams every year.

In case no one mentioned it, only 13 fouls.
Down from 25 first game.
Adjusting.

At the end of the day we should be 2-0 but it's early and I still love the make up of this team. They'll get it clicking and we'll be fine

SJA - I was just thinking the same thing as I was scrolling down these post. You can see these guys are determined to jell. Lots of new additions that have to work themselves in (Barton, Hubbs and yes even Maymon again).

I agree with all of the positive things to take from the game. But as the OP said, we started off slow which is a bit concerning because the schedule will get more challenging as the season goes on, especially in the upcoming tournament.

Agree with the rebounding in that Stokes and Maymon do need some help but we still should always lead and lead by a lot in that statistic especially against the "cupcakes".

A win is a win and counts as such. Thank goodness there are no style points included in basketball.

Next up, the Citadel.

It's a little early to be making that assumption, IMO.

Another flop imo. I have seen better pee-wee efforts and coaching from Dad's. A complete turn around is what is needed. If this doesn't happen it will be a real bad year with a lame duck coach.

I don't know much about Upstate, but SCU ain't the sort of team anyone cares to know anything about. It seems to me, however, that with the talent we're putting on the floor we should blowing out the SCUs of the basketball world even this early in the season.

I believe the fouls are going to change each game with the refs. I saw many no calls that would have been called against xavier

I am wondering if the new rules have something with not being physical down low. I was only able to see the first 10 minutes of the game. I noticed Stokes defending the post where his man backed him down and scored. He then looked back at the ref as if to question why the offensive guy can be physical and he can't. He is scared to pick up fouls. I think last year he would have kept a forearm in his back. Just something I noticed.

Lets see what they do this year. As others have said, basketball is totally different than football. I only saw the first 10 minutes, but I saw a hot shooting team. We were destined to take over in the second half.

Some of y'all are delusional and don't understand that in college basketball really any team can get hot and win on any given night. Do you not watch the NCAA's? Do you think 15 seeded FGCU was more talented than 2 seeded Georgetown last year? No, they weren't they just got hot. Upstate is no pushover they are a solid team. They already upset VTech. They got hot in the 1st half, the Vols made the right adjustments in the 2nd half and finished the game out after being down by 10+. This isn't football where talent always wins. Be happy with this win, and take it as experience we need on coming back from a 10 point deficit.

Great points stoked. If you can play a little and fill it up, you can run with anybody. Its uncle Ricoish but we made a run at the sate tourney in hs at Briarcrest in the mid 80's and beat teams we shouldn't have. Beat Sylvester Grays team and lost in the final to Melrose when they had Bedford, Bailey and Sidney Adkins. Played 3 future pro big men in 2 games. Our tallest player was 6'4. They pulled away at the end and won by 12, but we had no business being there. Talent is overall even better today on all levels and the shorts have just a tad more wiggle room and don't weigh 5lbs of thick poly/cotton/wool mix.
