The USC-Upstate Post Game Report

I'm just messing with you, trying to lighten this place up a little. I'd like to see it around 10-15 depending on how it's working. I still would like AJ to get a few minutes. Speaking of Moore, everyone can see that he deserves more minutes, any thoughts on why he isn't getting them? Unless he's in the dog house for some unknown reason, I'm confused on this one.

Martin playing too many, if Q didn't see minutes in the first 2 games Moore would've seen more IMO.

I am relaxed, but two years of not making the NCAA Tourney is not acceptable. A third year of not making the tourney with this roster will send you to the unemployment line. Martin's teams have always underachieved.

Wait today's selection Sunday?

Lol well I know that, I meant any thoughts as to why he isn't getting the most bench minutes?

Seems to me that it would make sense to give him more minutes. As was mentioned in the op, added help in rebounding is needed. He has the ability to provide that, IMO. Perhaps there's an issue in practice. Coach knows, we don't.

The issue last night was just not enough minutes. Moore is looked at to play the 4, unless there's foul trouble between McRae, Richardson and Hubbs the 2/3 are locked up, and Moore is just most effective at the 4. Stokes played 36 minutes and Maymon 31, that only leaves 13 minutes. AJD logged a few, Q logged a few, and Moore got a few.

If there's foul trouble in the post he will get more minutes, but if Stokes and Maymon stay out of foul trouble they're both looking like they'll play 30+.

I am not gonna sit here and try to tell anybody that USC Upstate is = NC State or anything like that, but no-name or not they have a good team. It says something to me when you see that they pulled the upset on Va Tech and gave Winthrop all they wanted (not sure what they have this year). Our defense in the first half was not our best, but looked a lot worse due to the way SCU was hitting. The Greene kid from Knoxville looked good too.

What really bugs me is the way a lot of people think because you didn't put a 40 point beat down on a school that is a supposed no-name, that somehow you failed or you are no good. I don't know how many "Cuonzo better get this turned around" comments I have seen on multiple sites. I agree that we need to make the tournament this year, but let the season play out before you start calling for heads.

I don't pretend to know everything about this game, but after playing and watching it for over 50 years I do seem to remember a few things.
1. It doesn't matter what name is on the jersey. Any team can beat any other team on a given night. (Same for baseball)
2. You can't put too much stock in early season games. Teams are generally building their game time chemistry and substitution rotations are getting worked out.
3. Basketball is not = Football. Football mentality does not apply to Basketball. The season is not over if you lose a game or two. As long as you take care of business you can still make the tournament, unlike football where a few losses can ruin the season.
4. Most basketball teams will have some peaks and valleys throughout the season. You want to end the season peaking. We have finished well the last couple of seasons, but didn't get things together quick enough early on. Hopefully, that changes this year, but IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO TELL at this point. Two games is not enough to see how things will go yet.

Sit back, take a breath, and enjoy the ride (unless your glass is half empty, then lament the ride).

Maymon shouldn't be playing 30 this early.
Scared me twice getting up off the floor like he was hurt last game.
That's fatigue.
Good way to get reinjured.

He didn't play fatigued though, and he looked night and day better from Xavier to Upstate. I don't think he should have to play big minutes the next 2 games, but come atlantis he may be relied on for 30 minutes.

I am a little late to the party on giving my thoughts about this game, but C'est la vie.

The new emphasis on fouls actually favored us and in my opinion bailed us out a little. We got to shoot an inordinate amount of free throws to keep us in the game and eventually get us over the hump, not to mention we shot them pretty well.

Now, I know we shot so many free throws because we attacked the basket intentionally with the hope of drawing them (McRae specifically) and this strategy likely came from the coaching staff. I would call our offense in much of the second half "Hero Ball".....and it worked....because our normal offense is a train wreck of a disaster.

How many pick and rolls are we gonna do for no reason at all? We rarely take advantage of the screen or pass to the rolling man.

Our offense against Xavier and USC Upstate in the first half can be summarized like this:

Pass around the perimeter 3 or 4 times. Someone shoots a three or we drive to the basket.

OR

Pass around the perimeter 3 or 4 times. Stokes posts up, we pass it to him. He makes a move to the basket or passes it back out. If he passes out of it then guy who catches it will pump fake a three and then we will start the process all over again of passing it around the perimeter.

I know I am over simplfying it a bit, but dang it is frustrating to watch.

He does look better than I expected so soon.
Hoping he's not like a boxer that takes too many in the head because he has too much heart.
Long season.

Great analogy actually. He's one of those guys Martin has to dedicate an assistant to pulling him after a set amount of minutes regardless of situation, because you know he won't come out willingly in a close game.
