President William McKinley was shot (twice) while attending the World's Fair in Buffalo, NY in 1901. Doctors were able to remove one of the bullets but could not find the other one, as it was embedded in muscle, so they closed his wounds assuming that he would be okay. He died eight days later. Ironically, the newly-developed X-ray machine was displayed at the fair, but doctors were reluctant to use it as they did not know what side effects it may have had on him.
