The Vanderbilt Postgame Report

Well they play fast of course. Young plays very recklessly at times, but still can just have huge games and he is basically impossible to guard. Powell is the one who really worries me, he is just an all around good player. They have about just under 300 stocks for the year and we are at 139 before tonight so that is gonna make it tough

I hope Richardson turns up the D on Young. Young is very talented.

I remember last year when we ran with Arkansas and it took them by surprise. I wouldn't do that this year on the road. Just play great D and work the ball to Stokes.

I agree with most everything but number 7. Golden is not our best ballhandler. He's not our best passer either. He is pretty good at getting to the rim and to the stripe and a decent shooter, but if we're talking about a true facilitator, I think Lopez is our guy. He had a couple of really nice passes tonight and his dribbling is the most crisp of anyone on the team. Probably not good for more than a bucket or two a game, but I think he's the true point guard we've been missing. I think we will still miss Golden though if he's out for an extended period of time.

Lopez is a nice little player, but highly limited. Golden is still the best ball handler and passer. If Lopez was as good you say, he'd playing over Trae.

Arkansas is an even more Jekyll and Hyde team playing at home and away than UT is. They get blown out in almost every single road game they play but do the opposite to opponents in their gym. They certainly have some talent and size. I'm expecting a very tough game Saturday and am leaning towards UT not picking up that first road win when it is over.

I hope Richardson is the one who guards him, he plays the point so I don't know how likely it is. We might end up seeing Jordan on him.

Have we had Josh guard a PG much this season I can't remember?

Missed 3 straight one and one's? Damn, I feel a little better then. UT would've won by more if not for that. Candy is a horrible FT shooting team but was on tonight, McRae was off, Golden was out the 2nd half and UT still won? That's why Candy sucks.

By the way, why was Golden out? Injury or Martin's decision?

1. Dear God, a win is a win, but can we stop with the close games? Geesh.

2. Cuonzo's decision to go with Lopez and Hall in the final seconds instead of Moore and Stokes was inexcusable and almost cost UT this game. Watching the final play, Lopez gets blown by, and Hall just stands there with the game deciding rebound in the air. Does that happen with Stokes? Nope. Cuonzo should thank the Lord they missed those shots.

3. Tennessee was 12-15 from the free throw line...then went 0-3 and missed three front ends. That was almost a disaster.

4. Bernard King Player of the Game: Jarnell Stokes. Box score stuffer tonight with 19 points/11 boards/3 assists/3 blocks and a steal. He was aggressive, and his offensive rebounding was the key in the game. He's improving and he handled double teams extremely well today. 8-12 from the field and 3-4 from the line. You take that all day, every day.

5. However, they have to run every play through him when he's on the floor. His scoring and playmaking is this team's greatest asset and he's the key to it. He would have had 25 had they gotten him the ball more.

6. Jordan McRae was 2-10 from the field and had no assists, while Trae Golden didn't play the second half. UT was able to still win. There weren't a ton of positives, but that was one.

7. Speaking of Golden, this team needs him. He's struggled mightily, but he's still the best ball handler and passer on the team. I like Brandon Lopez, but if Golden is out for an extended period of time, UT is screwed.

8. UT's defensive inconsistency was the reason the game was close. For whatever reason, the perimeter defense was not there. They looked slow moving their feet, and I felt like they gave up with on ball screens too much. I was disappointed with the defense and I'm sure Cuonzo was too.

9. The good news? Tennessee only had nine turnovers tonight. They did a better job protecting the ball, and for the most part had better passes...but they still throw bad entry passes.

10. It's a win. It was ugly and tough to watch in the sense that UT just couldn't put Vandy away, but without Golden and McRae no showing, UT can get to .500 Saturday with a road win at Arkansas. UT gets a couple extra days off and hopefully UT can fix the defensive issues. Any time the Vols win is a good night.

Go Vols! :hi:
Good points regarding Cuonzos late decisions. Hate to be negative but that was AWFUL! Beat a pathetic Vandy team at home by 1 because they missed 2 point blank shots in the final seconds? Where was McRae? AWOL I'd say. Got absolutely no positives out of that game other than it wasn't another bad loss. And, if this team is so bad that it will miss Golden given the way he's been playing, then it's a completely lost cause. Ready to move on to next year when Maymon and Hubbs are here.

Bama Saturday. He guarded Releford for stretches.

A) Stop whining.

B) Giving up till next year is a defeatist attitude. A lot can still be accomplished.

C) If Stokes isn't a positive for you, then I'll just assume you didn't watch the game because you were eating out, saw the score, and are making great assumptions.

I wouldn't take him off Young. He will be the 2nd best guard we have seen this year.

I don't mind McRae and Moore guarding on some possessions, but Richardson's job Saturday should be to rebound and hound B.J. Young.

The fact that Jarnell Stokes is starting to really live up to the hype and you people are complaining we beat Vandy is embarrassing. If you hate this team so much, then turn off the damn TV and stop posting on this site, noone wants to hear all this negative **** all the time, especially when we WIN

Looked to me like odom knocked the game winning shot out of the basket there at the end. His attempt to tip it in looked like it prevented it from going in.

The ball was on its way down IMO. He had no other choice.

No I watched him. Numbers were good at the end but he's a bull in a china shop. Obviously glad he was there or was lose by double digits. Absolutely no low post footwork at all. I'm not making any assumptions, just telling you what I saw more from a team standpoint- incredibly stagnant offense, bad defensive lapses, poor clutch play/free throw shooting to close out an absolutely awful Vandy team. I'm glad they won but for crying out loud, the overall team execution was discouraging to watch. FINALLY, I'm not whining, just giving my honest opinion of what I saw- a bad basketball team

Another double-double, several blocks, a few steals, and he's not a positive? Wow...

I honestly don't know what you saw tonight. Jarnell's got above average post footwork.

And Vandy was a lucky 35 footer away from beating Ole Miss....Is Ole Miss a bad basketball team?

UT's not cream of the top. Right now they are an average basketball team that has improved in the last two weeks.

I don't know if I fully agree about the team being screwed if Golden is out for some time. I like Lopez. Not sure what it is about him and can't find any other words at the moment, but he seems to have a step Golden never does. I don't know if we've seen enough of him to determine if he can be as good of a passer as Golden.

No offense - but if Lopez can't be as good a passer as Golden we should take away his scholarship -- oh wait.

Golden is one of the worse passing point guards in the history of point guard play. Lopez, who is 5' not much - and hasn't played in 5 games out played and out passed Golden in the time he was in there. He had 3 assists in his few minutes and I would bet Golden has the majority of his games with 1 or fewer assists. Golden is all dribble driver and throw it up amongst the trees and when he is not doing that -- he is thinking about dribble drive.
