Notre Dame, yes, but not the other two. If Boise loses, they will be replaced by the new highest ranked Group of 5 team. If BYU loses, they will be replaced by a new representative from the Big 12, which right now would be Colorado. We need an at-large team ahead of us to lose to put us into the field. No but now we don't just need a handful of SEC teams to lose. Other teams outside of conference losing (BYU, Boise, Notre Dame, etc) pretty much gets us in.
This. The fact that any year a 24th ranked mid major conference champion would be in over a two loss bubble SEC team is a joke. Just rank the 12 best teams and put them in the playoff. The automatic qualifier for the conference game winner is very silly now that we are seeing it play out. BYU ranked 14 but in the playoff.
One of the committee members just said that probably the most important factor as far as ranking teams, outside of the obvious, when it comes to SOS, stats, etc. is the eye test and actually watching the games. Tennessee probably didn't help themselves a lot in this area with so many close games against mediocre opponents...and the stretch of not scoring in the first half. Hopefully they can overcome that though in the next two weeks.
