The automatic qualifier for the conference game winner is very silly now that we are seeing it play out. BYU ranked 14 but in the playoff.
No it’s not. Winning your conference should mean something. It does in every other sport. Division winners all qualify in pro sports.

If we were to lose a nonconference game, drop two SEC games, get to Atlanta via a tiebreaker, and win an upset to win the SEC, I highly doubt anyone here would be arguing to do away with the auto bid.

Couldn’t agree more

What we are seeing is the bias in college football that has always been since I have been a fan. First UT game 1969. Alabama 7th ND 6th. Please correct me if you think I am wrong.
I agree and would have ND behind Bama and Ga and ahead of Ole Miss, but don’t think it is evidence of bias…these are close calls and arguable points

ESPN lists Vanderbilt as a key win for Texas. Will Tennessee get that same consideration?
Vandy is 6-4 right now. That’s decent. If they are 6-6 when we beat them, it’s not as decent.

However, I do think they are a legitimate team. Beating them shouldn’t boost your playoff resume though. But Texas only has one loss, so of course they’re in.

That may be the worst possible thing that could happen since Boise State is now a 4 seed.

Need Notre Dame’s loss to be to USC not Army.
If ND loses, they’re out, no matter who it’s to. Army wouldn’t jump enough spots to pass both the Big 12 and G5 conference winners due to their SOS.

We just need to take care of our own business. There’s some teams ahead of us that will stub their toes in the next couple weeks and give us a chance to move up a spot or two.

Anytime humans are involved (such as a committee) without specific measurable criteria (that could be independently recreated), bias will be part of the process.

Look no further than Texas (much less Penn St. and Alabama). Vandy is their best win (by 3). My “eye test” says TN played Georgia better in a more hostile environment. Yet, here we are….

Your scenario is least likely to ever happen haha. Im sure the committee will make sure the conference winners are in the top 12 in the final rankings just so they do not look foolish. A team ranked #14 has no business being in the playoff based on them winning a conference championship. This is not the basketball tournament where you have 60+ teams so automatic qualifiers do not carry that much weight.

Damn right we played them better and it was an away game.

Exactly.

Even as it is, you will have the SEC and Big 10 accounting for 2/3 of the field. The other conferences have to have SOME hope of getting in.

It isn’t terribly unlikely to happen. I mean it probably is unlikely for us, but the scenario will happen for some team eventually.

Honestly based on all of college football history, the 12th team has never had a shot at a championship, so you can’t complain too much if you get booted by a team that actually won something meaningful.

Yes.

How horrible would it be for one or more at large teams in front of us go down and then we turn around and crap the bed against Vandy?

All we need is Notre Dame to lose to either USC or Army, Indiana to get smoked by Ohio State, Florida to upset Ole Miss, Auburn to upset Bama, or Minnesota to upset Penn St.

We have several scenarios. We also need to beat Vandy by a decent margin.
Better be ready for Vandy. A loss there or a close game changes everything.

The highest ranked team TN has beaten is #7 - bama
The highest ranked team miss has beaten is #10 - ga

The two losses for TN (Arkansas and ga) have a combined conference record of 9-6
The two losses for ole miss (KY and LSU) have a combined conference record of 4-9

KY has ONE conference win - at Ole Miss.

This one is the hardest for me to see any justification.

Yep we should definitely be above Ole Miss. I think Florida beats them this weekend so they will be out of it anyway.

First team out. Well, that’s exactly what we earned . . . Or, more accurately, didn’t earn. Another year of squandered opportunities after getting a favorable schedule and beating Florida and Alabama.

Hey, it’s better than the Butch, Pruitt, and Dooley years. And in year 4 of Heupel’s tenure, I suppose we should be thankful that we’ve built back to respectability so fast.

Next year will be harder. Our O-line is likely going to be worse. Our WRs are in year 2 of under performing. The defense isn’t likely to match this year’s effectiveness (well, except in the UGA game, where they didn’t show up).

Man, it sucks pi$$ing away these big chances when they come our way. This team just isn’t ready for the big time. Not sure we’re close yet.
