The Weightlifters Thread

I used to use the hammer strength iso-lateral shoulder press, but the motion just didn't jive with my shoulders, so I went back to using dumb bells

I try to use free weights for most lifts. I like to incorporate a few machines though - my favorite is the hammer strength high row. I will also use the pec deck. Anyone got some others they like?

I use a lot of hammer strength & cables on shoulders & back (free weights as well). I use the pec deck to burn out about every other chest workout.

One more week til I get my much needed rest week. I will probably do some light plyometrics, pushups, pullups, etc in my hotel room over the vacation week.

First workout in 2 months without jacked/OEP. Surprisingly, I didn't really notice a drop-off in energy level. Good workout. Really good chest workout. Now I'll probably coast through everything else in anticipation of my vacation. I'll try to hit legs hard.

Memorial Day weekend tripped me up. I had dropped 22 total pounds. Gained almost 4 over the four day weekend though. Today I'm back to work on cutting.

As a follow up I lost almost 3 pounds since yesterday morning. It's amazing what sodium does to your water retention. LOL. Must've been the damn brat I had on Monday afternoon.

Just bought my son and myself a weight machine. Weider. What would be a good starters routine for a 39 and 16 year old? Never did the weight lifting thing before. Any advice appreciated.

I have weighed 176 since week 1, day 1. WTF? Have neither gained nor lost a pound on any given day. I would expect at least some weight fluctuation. I'm about to start cutting, a little late for the beach. Think I can make any progress in 3 weeks?

I'd guess I only need to lose 5-7 lbs, but it's the dreaded love handles. I have no fat anywhere else.

Do an upper body day, and a lower body day, then rest 2 days, and do it again. Once you've conditioned yourself you can do more detail.

Let me know what you figure out. It's the absolute last place that I'm able to lose fat.

Most guys carry their fat on their stomach, diet and cardio will eliminate the love handles. That is the biggest pain in the ass area. Do you count calories? I use an app myfitnesspal which is great and easy. The biggest thing is knowing your maintence calories, there is no exact way but you can get an estimate.

ok, what about pounds and reps?

I don't think it's about the weight, or the number of reps, IMO. I like to do at least 5 reps, but I might do as many as 20. I'm usually in the 8-12 range.

As far as the weight goes, it's REALLY not about the weight, it's about how you lift it. Isolate the muscle(s) you are targeting, and do slow controlled reps. I CAN work out with 120 lbs on barbell curls, but I don't ever do it because I can't properly control the weight. I go with 70-90 lbs. Leave your ego at the door, and don't worry about how you measure up to others. You'll see progress a lot faster by lifting properly*.

That's the best advice I can give a newb.

*If your son is training for football, or something, he'll probably want to lift more "explosively", but I imagine you are going more for shape, so slow and controlled is the way to go.

The big benefit of being a newbie is that pretty much anything you do will give you some results. A lot of lifting knowledge is gained by trial and error. My best advice is to practice visualization while lifting. Try to feel the targeted muscle work rather than just move the weight with sloppy form.

Yeah I do. I don't have a gut in the least - not far off from a six pack - but the handles are killing me

Great advice. I try to visualize the blood in my body overloading the target muscle and just making it swell. Helps with my form/focus.
