The Weightlifters Thread

I only have two speeds when it comes to drinking - none or blackout. The older I get the more it wrecks my metabolism. I'm trying to avoid it but the beer aisle in the grocery store is tough to pass by.

Best to save it for a day out of the week, even that should be it at most.

Drinking is by far the most counterproductive thing you can do if you're trying to take intense weight training seriously. Even pigging out at McD's every day of the week is infinitely preferable to drinking.

Agreed. I used to really put it down in college and up to about 3 years ago I followed that same regiment. I look back and regret it now b/c I could've been in sick shape if I would've just avoided it completely. It feels like I have to work twice as hard now to get the same results.

Yes, even one drink can ruin a perfectly good workout. Alcohol has a large impact on amino acid metabolism (and protein synthesis as a result), throws fluid balance out of whack, the effectiveness of B1 and B6, all among other things.

Put simply: Your liver does a lot of stuff, including a large part of working out, building muscle, getting cut, etc. When you drink, your liver drops absolutely everything else its doing to get rid of that alcohol, including important work-out-y things.

Luckily, it takes a whole hell of a lot more than a few years of hard drinking in college to get to the point where function is decreased that much. Alcohol detox doesn't take all that long, and you're typically back up in working order when you're done.

Now does all this mean that if you drink you shouldn't bother working out? Hell no. I just know and accept that because I drink a couple nights a week, that I won't be getting everything I can out of working out. But lifting is always better than not lifting, no matter what.

Am currently at Bonnaroo and will be until Monday. Will definitely get behind on my weightlifting and conditioning.

Back at it, today. I need to figure out something I can do while I'm on vacation next week. Who knows, maybe another week off would do me some good.

Maybe just pushups and pullups will get me by

If you have a pair of dumbells, take them. If you don't you can still do some serious work with pushups, body weight lunges/squats (high reps), chair dips, burpees, and pullups.

Also if you've got an iphone or ipad you can get a free tabata trainer app. Applying that training technique to the above exercises will leave you crying for mommy.

I am the strongest right now that I've been in a while. I wake up really hungry, would that be because my muscles are growing? What is good to eat at this time? I've been eating cereal usually. How does weight lifting personally effect your golf game?

It's good for your game, IMO. Just as long as you don't lose flexibility.

Although, ive seen guys too "muscle bound" to be able and swing a club. But really fat people often have the same issue
