The Wichita State Postgame Report

Good win. Missed the last 3 minutes as the dvr messed up.
-Sounds like Trae and Jordan took over. Good. They needed that. Jordan has to shoot and drive. We are short on scorers and he's one of them.
-Edwards needs minutes. He got lost on D a couple times, which is probably what's holding him back
-Yemi. I have expected him to have double double potential by his jr year and I think if he can get the minutes that we will see more performances. He has still not played much basketball for a soph in college. His dipsydoo shots crack me up. The look lucky, but they keep going in.
-Stokes is about effort right now. His motor is going about 60%. He was also treated like sr big men that are 22 usually treat teenagers down in the post.
-Offense still getting pushed too far out with unnecessary motion and guys like Kenny Hall accepting a pass out at the 3 point line. That's too far out and happens too often in this offense if you ask me.

Good W though. Good to see them pick up the pace after it looked like the same problems early. I think that press backfired on WSU a little in the long run because it didn't allow us to walk the ball up the court.

Congratulations, Vols, on a good win against the Shockers! Defeating previously undefeated and 23rd ranked WSU helps to put recent (offensively struggling) gms in the rear view. Build from this...

Go Vols!

he has to have someone kick it out or have plays run for him to be a factor in the offense.

Exactly. His skill-set doesn't translate to creating offense himself. He just doesn't have the one-on-one skills to create much offensively for himself. He is a spot-up shooter who gives great effort on both ends. Nothing more, nothing less.

Good win at home, but offensively they still look bad. UT maybe hit 7 jump shots at best the rest come from put backs or drives to the basket. Just can't figure out what they are trying to do on offense.

-For as good of a coach as Gregg Marshall has a reputation of being, it baffles me as to why he didn't zone us more. The book is out on us, and we didn't exactly shoot the lights out last night to scare anyone into strictly playing man defense. I say this with the assumption that Marshall has no qualms about lining his team up in a zone defense. Perhaps he feels they are more inept in a zone vs man?

-Trae Golden did exactly what Trae Golden needs to do. Take it to the hole and get fouled, make a shot, or kick it to an open teammate. Good job by him. Still too many TOs from your PG, but those are excusable from a scoring PG vs a distributor/facilitator, and right now we need Trae to be a scorer because no one else seems to want to.

-Yemi played one of his best games as a Vol and we don't win without him. 9 pts and 8 rebs in 20 minutes is phenomenal for a guy with as little experience as he has.

-McRae played very well offensively and was efficient. I'd like to see his rebounds and steals go up, and there were times he played matador defense (though he has improved his defense overall). Someone as long as he is should disrupt passing lanes more often and rebound more as well. His two rebounds last night came in key situations. Needs to work on ball-handling as well.

-Stokes is a shadow of his potential right now, and worse yet, his effort is not near 100%. He was simply outhustled for rebounds, position, and loose balls. He finished with 6 pts and 7 rebs in only 18 minutes, but fouls are still a huge problem for him, and now effort seems lacking as well.

-Like someone else suggested earlier, I'm surprised CCM left Stokes in after picking up his 3rd foul. Was this an oversight or did he really trust Stokes to play without fouling?

-Overall, a great win vs an undefeated top-25 team, and we protected our home court having both hands tied behind our back without Maymon and without Stokes for long stretches. The overall team effort seemed better and the pushed tempo was just what the Dr ordered. Hopefully, CCM adjusts and keeps pushing the tempo and encouraging guys to get the ball to the paint.

No we didn't look bad at all compared to the last few games. We actually utilized the the high screen and attacked. Are they where they want to be? No, but last night showed me they were going in the right direction. Hitting only 7 jump shots is perfect do you really want this team to settle for jump shots? I can almost guarantee the plan in those practices were to attack to the basket. The free throw attempts show how aggressive they were. Offense is taking the right step and Defense has continued to be there

We tied the most points WSU has given up all here, they are a very good defensive team, so I'm very happy with the O.

The goal isn't to be a jump shooting team, is that what you're looking for? The fewer threes and jumpers we take the better our chances are, when these team gets the ball in the paint or attacks the rim we are very good.

We aren't going to be a long beach state that puts up 85 points a game and is jacking threes, if that's what you want to see Martin isn't the coach for you.

Jarnell has been a disappointment this year. And no not just offensively...so it can't solely be tied to Maymon.

His footwork is bad on defense, and he is lazy when it comes to rebounding, very lazy.

Hall absolutely abused stokes all night and beat him over and over again to loose ball, really was frustrating.

He's a young man. I think he's still learning the game. He'll come on as the season continues or Zo will know why.
GO VOLS!

Unnecessarily coy???

You do realIze there are laws keeping him from giving details right?

If Maymons issue is an infection caused from surgery, I don't see what the big deal is about providing details, HIPPA or no HIPPA .. They never have an issue disclosing that a player has a torn ACL or other injury. This is a very strange and mysterious injury. Especially after Maymons dad came out and said Maymons knee is fine.

The learning and progressing isn't what I have an issue with, it's the lack of effort and overall just checking out of the game at times.

Stokes doesn't seem to be enjoying being on the court. Are there some deeper issues we don't know about?

Maybe classes. This is his first time dealing with college exams, having to practice and play. No telling what it is but that would be my guess. I've noticed he hasn't been on twitter like the beginning of the season.

He's misinterpreting the HIPAA privacy act, if that's what you're referring to. There's nothing in it to prohibit him from giving out a more detailed explanation of the problem and a timeline for his return to the lineup. Even Jeronne's father has been more forthcoming than Cuonzo. I'd feel better now if they'd just go ahead and redshirt him to give us some sort of closure for now.

Does Maymon even want to red shirt? What are his long term plans? If he's in college another year he'll be a 23 year old next spring. That's not old, but it's above the mean for a guy entering professional basketball.

I like him out there over Moore. He brought a leadership to the floor tonight that we miss when golden is out. Also, as much as they pressed and as tight as their D was we needed a good ball handler and Moore isn't that.

It hurts because we need Moore to progress at the point, but right now I like what Lopez is bringing.

Yeah I agree but he has to learn how to penetrate and finish...two or three times he appeared to get caught in situations where he didnt know what to do with the ball...of course that will come as he learns the college game...and his on ball defense and quickness are definitely a plus....

There's no reason to declare a redshirt right now, pleasing the volnation posters isn't a reason.
