The Woke Olympics

I hadn't thought about her. Was she Soviet? She probably was grown in a lab. What they did to their athletes on a daily basis waa unconscionable.

So we responded by using professional athletes in amateur competition to show them.

That was my understanding..that it was more her taking issue with the new scoring metrics, which to me, is a horrible reflection of the Olympic committee to artificially “even the playing field”. A biased, income redistribution of sport scoring, so to speak.

It's going to be interesting to see how universities decide to even the playing field now that the decision has been made to let professionals play "amateur" college sports. With the people running the show today, I'm really glad the Cold War is over and knowing all those old nukes are safely locked away.

It's an objective opinion in my opinion. Just like my opinion of Michael Jordan being the greatest basketball player of all time is my opinion (though with some pretty strong backing).

I tend to think the person who did it "first" and elevated a sport to a new level like Jordan or Comaneci or what Johnny Unitas did for the QB position tends to be "better" in my book than someone with all the stats in the world. Yeah, Tom Brady broke every record in the book, but did so while standing on the shoulders of giants.

Nothing against Biles at all. But I personally look at the new levels Comaneci took the sport to as just as or more important than winning a thousand gold medals.

But despite the unquestionable difficulty of “The Biles,” FIG assigned the move a difficulty rating of “H.” Although no one in the world can currently do this move but Simone Biles, FIG chose not to value this move as an “I” or a as a “J” which may have also been appropriate. FIG justified this by claiming that this move carries increased risks for gymnasts, “including a potential landing on the neck.” Aside from the fact that from a layperson’s perspective, every gymnastics move seems like it could result in a potential landing on the neck, something seems familiar about this situation. It turns out that creating rules to stifle excellence is an all too common, cross-sector approach to limiting competition.

If You Can’t Beat Them, Change The Rules: “The Biles” And Unfair Barriers For Excellence In America
Yes that rule is bs. But if she stepped away bc of that you would think she would mention it.

I think she showed tremendous self awareness. She knew that she wasn't in the right space to compete at high level in that moment. If she continued to perform at the level she did during her vault the US might not have won a medal at all. So she bowed out to not hurt the team.

Simone Biles quit. It's harsh, but it's also true. Now, I don't know what's going on in her personal life. If she was so bothered by something that she legitimately couldn't compete today, which very well may be the case, then hope she is able to resolve whatever issue was keeping her from competing.

The hypocrisy from the media on this, though, is frustrating. If Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes quit in the middle of a playoff game citing that they just didn't feel right mentally and were stressed out, they would get absolutely vilified by the media. The narrative would be that they weren't tough enough to fight off the pressure and that they let their team down. I'm not saying people should treat Simone Biles poorly for what happened today because they absolutely shouldn't, but why is she getting this royal treatment from some in the media? That's the ridiculous part of this.

Dude, this girl won gold with one leg...

It was a different era.

Nobody gave a damn about mental health bsck then so you either succeeded or failed and then dealt with your personal demons later in private.

Some dealt fine and some leaned on alcohol and drugs to cope.

It does appear though that there is a healthy medium and right now the USA as a whole has not found it yet.

Scottie Pippen, a guy who is in the basketball hall of fame, quit on his team. Literally refused to go into a game in a clutch moment in the playoffs because he wasn’t the guy getting the last shot. Do you remember him as a quitter?

They'd also be losing millions of dollars worth of endorsements and hundreds of thousands in per game bonuses. Their stakes are a wee bit higher.

When your sport barely posts your bills, you can afford some extra self care.

Ultimate Reward for a Vol Guard's Comeback (Published 1997)

KERRI STRUG? Big deal. Crummy little ankle sprain. One Olympic vault, landing on a mat. Had to be carried around by her coach for what seemed like a month.

Kellie Jolly? Very big deal. Tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee for the second time while in a pickup game on Oct. 6, was on her feet a week and a half later, back on the basketball court less than three months after that and was the last woman left holding the ball as the final seconds counted down last night to another championship for the University of Tennessee.

And when it was over, when the Pat Summitt's Lady Vols had presented their coach a 68-59 victory over Old Dominion and her fifth title in 11 years, Jolly fired the ball to the floor, jumped into the arms of her teammate Tiffani Johnson, a jolly good leap for someone with a right knee twice surgically repaired.

Cam Newton not making an attempt to dive on the ball in the Super Bowl against the Broncos. Many in the media and fans alike ripped him to shreds when he said he didn't go after the ball because he didn't want to risk injury
