The WRs / Drops

Agree. They dropped too many that hit them in the numbers. Not Joe’s fault. However, they aren’t MLB catchers and there is no reason Joe has to throw a 100 mph fastball every pass. A little touch helps the receiver immensely.
Spot on assessment. The difference between a good QB and a great one is knowing how to lay the pass out there at just the right speed. Joe needs to work on taking a little bit off the ball, and be a tad in front of them instead of making them turn or twist to catch it.

Both parties need to improve alot. Joe needs to improve his accuracy and the WR need to bail him out and make tough catches. When your entire offensive passing attack resorts to throwing screen passes to WR all night against an FCS opponent, that doesn't imply any confidence. Heupel got to the point where he just wanted to get the "W" and knew throwing downfield was more often than not a negative play. Despite him stating post-game that WR were wide open in the middle of the field, they couldn't execute it.

During his coaching tenure at UT, against a clearly inferior opponent it was probably Heupel's worst offensive showing. And its not as if these guys are a bunch of freshman. 1 senior QB, 2 senior WRs, 2 senior TE, 1 senior RB and 4-5 senior OL. Hopefully we aren't talking about the same issue mid-way through the season. If we are, we very well may be 3-3 staring at Alabama on the road. I'm optimistic enough to think we will play better but if this program has turned a corner and is really a contender, we need to beat a less than stellar Florida team in the Swamp. If I was Florida I would play one safety up, blitz often and dare Milton and our receivers to beat them.

Squirrel & Thornton dropped passes in their hands. Small dropped a perfect pass that was a big play. Penalties negated about 30+ yds at least. A missed PI in the end zone. But hey, if it’s all Joe in your mind, go with it.

They need to play the young guys with Bru and Squirrel then.

Until Thornton and Keyton can get their head out or their butts
Copied and pasted from another thread. "Well, the young man (Keyton) is leading the team in almost every category! He's 2nd in receptions with 8 to Squirrel's 10. He's 1st in reception percentage with 72.7. He's leading in yardage with 113 so far to Squirrel's 75. He's leading in yards per reception with 14.1 to Bru's 10.3. And he's the only WR with a touchdown. Let me guess, Bru has not disappointed you? He's 3rd or 4th in all of the other categories"! It really looks like you don't know what you're talking about.

“We?”

I thought UT would regress at WR, and that the RB’s would be the strength.

I got lashed on here for saying that Keyton was an average WR at best after everyone was gushing over him for that one catch against Florida. McCoy will get drafted and may be turned into a Deebo Samuel type player. Thornton and White still have a lot to prove.

Keyton had a good year last year. He’s started slow this year but it’s early. Saturday was a terrible game all across the WR board. Don’t know what to think about Thornton yet. It’s put up time for him Sat.

Didn't know he said that but to me this sounds like it's on Milton.

Thornton has been a huge disappointment. He's dropped a minimum of 4 passes in 2 games. And I haven't seen him get the sort separation he should get with his skillset.
I had never watched any Oregon games while he played there, so I knew nothing about him until I watched some footage last month after a YouTuber said he'd be our #1 receiver. The highlight reel was very underwhelming. Like you say, very little separation. Certainly nothing like what we saw from Hyatt, Tillman, White, or Keyton last season. During the Austin Peay game, I felt like a lot of the drops were partially due to less-than-optimal throws, being thrown behind receivers, etc. But on Thornton's comeback route, Milton couldn't have possibly thrown a better ball. During the Virginia game, I saw the Vol guy who comments on the cbssports gametracker (Wes Rucker maybe?) say the long pass Keyton dropped was a bad throw, but I felt like that was a very, very catchable ball and Keyton's fault. But Keyton was so solid last year and had the amazing catch against Florida that I feel optimistic that his worst ball this season is behind him, but I don't feel the same optimism about Thornton, though he can't possible play worse than he already has.

It's a good thing you aren't running an NFL draft! Stats don't lie.

If I remember right you were one of the ones saying Squirrel was gonna beat Hyatt's td record. Not gonna happen unless he improves dramatically.
Fans were being foolish thinking he would exceed Hyatt's season. He benefited from being unknown and being surrounded by other great WR's. No one really had to focus on him. We also had Hooker running things. We aren't the team we were last year. Still, the league isn't as strong and we're better on the defensive front 7. The identity won't be the same. I think we'll have to be more run heavy and maybe not as fast. We need the OL to gel and become a stability and not a liability.

WR Corps should be one of our absolutely strongest groups. Yesterday’s performance was disappointing to put it mildly

Saturday will be your first view of full playbook and all out effort by the offense. It will also be our first chance to measure our offensive squad's continuity under anticipated game pressure. Will find out if we have any CLUTCH in us.
