The WTF story of the Day

Could you imagine being in one of those pools when that thing hit?

Back in 2017 or so, I was with some friends in Costa Rica for a bachelor excursion. A quake of ~6.5 magnitude hit about 15 km from the AirBnb we had rented. The pool (in-ground, went from 3ft to 8ft depth-wise) had about half the water left in it, and the hot tub (in-ground, but with the top at about 2ft above the pool deck) had pretty much all the water gone from it. Aside from losing power for a few hours and the tiki bar structure on the roof deck collapsing, there was minimal damage all things considered.

As high up as those pools were in the videos...that would've been a wicked ride. A substantial moment arm and force are powerful duo.

A Fansly "content creator," 27, was taken into custody after she allegedly sold a video of sexual activity involving a Chihuahua on Snapchat for $500.
During an investigation, authorities allegedly discovered multiple videos of alleged abuse with multiple other canines.
The suspect was released after posting a $10,000 bond and, according to reports, none of the allegedly abused animals have been seized by authorities.

Is “Fansly” a budget FansOnly for the bubba crowd?

Burn the whole place down. Twice.
"Reptile Relocation Sydney owner Cory Kerewaro said two of the captured adults gave birth to a total of 29 snakes in the bag while Cooper was still sifting through mulch catching more."

like wow

One thing that caught my eye in particular was the eventual failure of the glass panel to the right-hand side of the pool. The water appears to splash up against it a few times, but it either shatters or dislodges. Towards the end of the video it's just lapping over the opaque wall, and the floats go over. Yikes!

False accusations need to carry stiffer minimum penalties.
I've seriously considered the idea the best minimum penalty for a false accusation is minimum penalty for what that accusation would have brought. For instance a false accusation of rape would carry the same penalties for the false accuser that being found guilty of a rape would incur plus any court costs if it went that far.

And that's just criminal...any smackdown a false accuser takes civilly is on the table as well.

I read up on this. As much as I like the idea of it ( who wouldn't like to see a wooly mammoth roaming Alaska?), it may not be the resurrection they claim. Regular wolf DNA was used with a few gene splices thrown in that are supposed as being dire wolf differences.

They deserve some applause, but it should be tempered. They made have done nothing more than create a new breed of Grey wolf.

This whole story reeks of real Jurassic Park vibes and we all know how well that turned out.

I put this in another thread but want to ask you the same thing. It's not so much dealing with this exact instance (that's just the instigating event) but moving forward the observation you correctly make here may not be as applicable. What then?

But what if they were? Or, more accurately stated, when does this become a distinction without a difference? For our purposes let's just remove any particular company's involvement and run the thought experiment in question. I didn't dig deep into any of this yet (it's pretty fascinating stuff) but I did run across a reference that Dire and Gray wolves share 99.5% of their DNA. This is obviously a simplification but what if it was like this:

DW=A-C-G-T-T-C-G-A
GW=A-G-C-T-T-C-A-G
"modified" GW=A-C-G-T-T-C-G-A

Soooo...exactly what is it about that last one that "isn't" a Dire Wolf? Does the fact it was synthesized to be a DW preclude it being literally genetically indistinguishable from a sourced DW sample? It's actually almost more a philosophical question than scientific.

There was (may still be) this show on Netflix called Altered Carbon that I liked very much. (First season anyway, had enough people warn me off the 2nd I didn't bother) I won't give too much away in case anybody wants to watch but there's a scene where a guy gets cloned. He's a true duplicate, physically identical down to the last atom with 100% memory transfer. So...which one was the "real" one? For that matter how would one in that scenario claim either one wasn't real?

At SOME point (whether it's really this company or not isn't relevant, the tech IS coming regardless) we're going to be able to bring about animals (currently extinct or already with us) that are going to simply be indistinguishable from their examplars.

Good question and I will not pretend to know the answer. We'll have to cross that bridge when we get to it is my opinion on the subject.

My preference is that they clone a recent extinct species like the Carolina Parakeet.... start with the small stuff that wont kill ya. Plus birds are modern dinosaurs so we get some experince with that before they go all velociraptor.

As curious as I am about how a mammothburger would taste, I like your idea of starting with species that would have a low risk of trampling/goring/biting me to death.

I saw something else where you can get your cat cloned for something like 20 grand... I thought man I have a great dog and would love to clone him but then again would it be the same? What if they cloned you, would you have two presences or would it just be really weird?

In that scenario I personally wouldn't consider it "the same". The fictional (Altered Carbon) example I gave earlier was especially interesting because the cloning process included total memory transfer. I'm with you in that there would certainly be a bonding attraction in knowing your "new" dog, as a matter what it physically "is" does in fact replicate your "old" dog but everything that actually made it your dog isn't there. All the things you did and experienced with your previous dog has no meaning with this one.

Going fictional again but I fairly recently caught a movie where something happened that had a guy's wife lose her memory. (there's probably a ton of variations on that theme) Anyway this wasn't even a clone, it was literally the same person/body. Even being the actual same body is a person that has lost all their memories/experiences/feelings the same person?

It's a real rabbit hole but what makes it so interesting is this is sort of the biological side of the AI/Skynet "what if" scenario. There is nothing that's stopping the AI thing...it's just a question of what happens. Gene editing/cloning is actually already here. Again...so what happens now? It's both a fascinating and very spooky line of thought.

agree with that... they can do the hardware part (cloning) but the software part (lived experiences) belongs to the original.
