Okay folks, I'm going to say it.

There are better coaches out there than John Gruden.

I really hope TN goes for the right hire.

Maybe but Jon Gruden would turn this program around faster than anyone we could get. Instant rock star status would have us foaming out the mouth on NSD.

1. There may well be better coaches
2. It isn't clear which of those might even be available
3. The best coach is a good thing; the right coach is a better thing
4. UT needs a coach that can and will unite the fan base
5. The wins will follow the RIGHT coach

I agree... Getting Patterson and Bumpas together would be a better hire, but that could just be me...

Based upon what? Gruden has a Super Bowl ring and an NFL winning percentage on par with Bill Parcells and Mike Shanahan.

He would be one of the few that would fill the stadium for the Orange and White game. I think TN needs that right now.

You may be right, but no one will listen.

I think Gruden could do the job, especially with the right assistants in place. But, there are others who would be as successful and some who would be better.

If Gruden comes, my question is, with the nearly 90,000 posts in the Gruden threads I-IX, what is he going to do when we lose our first game and there are just as many negative posts about him? Will he bolt for a more adoring fanbase?

I think it is true that there are better coaches out there than Jon Gruden.

However, Jon Gruden may be the best coach who is willing to take this job.

I have been wondering how UT it going to get a proven active coach with the current buyouts. My only guess we would get a coach that has proven they can win without the heavy buyout (Petrino as an example). Stoops just signed a new 7 year deal back in September 2011 that would pay him 34.5 million. He current salary is over 5 million this year with a $800,000 bonus in January of this year. Also, I saw a couple post that said Haslam was going to pay Dooley's buyout and the first year salary of the new coach. Was that a internet rumor?

I don't really think we'll get gruden but I would like to hear who's is a better coach that we can hire. I really hope we don't go after strong and golden.

I agree with the OP. Gruden may have a winning record but it really isn't spectacular (not even .550). He won the superbowl with a team that was built by Tony Dungy. Granted he did win the SB, as Dungy's influence left Tampa Bay, so did their winning. Time will tell if he does decide to come to TN, but I'm still not sold that he is the best choice out there

Jon Gruden may be a good fit but he isn't the only one that would bring the Vols back to prominence in the SEC. Getting a Gary Patterson, Chris Petersen, Charlie Strong, Jimbo Fisher, or Bob Stoops would not be a let down since all are proven winners. Ut must get it's financial house in order in athletics to be able to keep a coach that is considered "high profile" and the only way to do that is fill the stands on Saturday and get to BCS bowl games. Any of the aforementioned coaches should be able to do that.

Chris Petersen or Jon Gruden are the only two you mentioned that I think would be worth the hire...

Really? Don't think anyone has discussed this before.

I would call in order,

Patterson offer 4.25 mil

Petersen offer 4.25 mil

Gruden offer 5 mil

Petrino offer 2.5 mil

Ault offer 2 mil

B. Jones offer 2.25 mil

Then see where I stood.

You're going to be disappointed.

No. I realize Gruden probably won't happen and for whatever reason Petersen loves Boise and no one else has been able to move him. I just feel a Jimbo Fisher and Charlie Strong aren't what we need right now. I don't think they're "build UT to national title contender" coaches. Sorry, I know they've done some great things at their respective schools but I don't think they can come in and dominate in the SEC like we want them to. We need someone that will come in and make a big splash and change the mentality of UT Football.
