Bring back coach Fulmer, He should have never been fired anyway !!!. Get some former vols like Tee Martin ,Dale Jones even Randy Sanders but i would keep chaney , conklin if they would stay . Al Wilson would bring some fire ! Get Chavis back if we can ? We also need a great defense coach if Chavis would not come back . I know i will get crap for saying bring fulmer back .but people this is the sec and we or anybody else cant win it all every year ..sometimes you will have a bad season or two . We need recruiters Fulmer can recruit even though he missed on r cobb. but hire the very best recruiting coord. we can get ! 152 -50 . i realize he may have gotten arrogant ,or lazy . but he has put 30+ years of his life for the Vols ! Let him get us stable then name his successor from that group.

How anyone can think Gruden is a good fit for the Ut job is beyond me. The guy has ZERO college head coaching experience. He champions an offense no one has made work in college and got fired from his last NFL gig. He talks a good game and probably could recruit, but I doubt he has the patience to run a college program. Gruden is a NFL guy and should stay there.

They just seem to come out of the wood work don’t they?

I said he never had to recruit as a college head coach. I know he has a very small amount of college experience. I'm sure those recruiting battles at Pacific should come in real handy.
You realize the staff will probably be doing more boots on the ground recruiting, right? Getting good recruiters on staff makes a head coach a great recruiter. A recognizable name coach is a definite plus as well. IF you can get a kid on campus for an official or get these kids in for camps to sell the coaches and the program that is half the battle.

So pay $6-$10 million for a coach who might do some recruiting, might be successful on the college level, and might not leave for the first NFL team that wants him?

Some people would call that risky. Intelligent people would call that asinine. There are better options. More proven options. And I don't think it matters anyway. Despite all the secret Gruden "sources" I don't see him having any real interest in us.

There is likely more return on this risk than on others. If you hire a coach like Strong, Petersen, or Patterson does that generate the interest/revenue that a name like Gruden does. If the leaders of this football program don't make a statement with this hire we are at a point where we could be irrelevant for a long time.

Okay folks, I'm going to say it.

There are better coaches out there than John Gruden.

I really hope TN goes for the right hire.

Sure there are better coaches ..........Neyland , Bryant , Landry , Walsh , Lombardi .... but they're all dead

I agree... Getting Patterson and Bumpas together would be a better hire, but that could just be me...

It's not just you....I want Gruden for the name and passion he would bring....but...Patterson is proven coach with considerably less talent on the field around him and he has won on the big stage...ala...Rose Bowl.

If Strong, Petersen, or Patterson doesn't generate interest/revenue then I have lost all faith in our fanbase. Those guys can win college football games. That will generate interest/revenue. Maybe, maybe Gruden can win college football games. But a name will only carry him so far so and if the wins don't come, you've hired yourself a $6-$10 million name. That is not a risk worth taking for our current program.

A consistent winner like Peterson or Patterson will generate interest because they will win.

  1. Golden
  2. Strong
  3. Fisher (Jimbo)
Not sure why the hate on Golden but mabye someone can fill me in on his downfalls and we can discuss. :peace2:

Golden at number one? That's simply Dooley with 40 extra lbs and a tie. NO.

He recruits semi-well but majority of it is because of location. His last recruiting class had 30+ players so of course it was ranked higher. He landed some big players away from UF but they were locals (to my knowledge). He hasn't found a way to win consistently (we should know this all to well), and NCAA lurking over him shouldn't make him feel better about our situation, since we are technically not clean ourselves.

He's a .500 coach in a third rate conference. I understand what he did at Temple and that he's been hamstrung by the NCAA but he seems pretty dooleyesque to me

Hmmm let's see here..... I will go by the same list that the people making the decision are using. Gruden, Gruden, Gruden, Gruden, and Gruden.

That list is terrible. If those are our top 3, then we are f'ed for a very long time to come.

No one will really want to discuss other coaches since we are so close to landing Gruden.

The difference to me is Dooley failed at La Tech where Golden won at his previous stop where NO one wins.
