These Vols can't beat Kentucky

It's a good thing they are still going to play the game. Kentucky has struggled to put teams away, we could go in there and shoot lights out.

This team can beat Kentucky. It isn't likely, but we have the talent and some of the skill.

I heard from a reliable source that Pearl is the only coach in America that could be currently successful at UT.

Seriously I want you to answer this question. You are the paid writer who covers TN basketball, do you think that anyone for UK can shoot outside? The conversation about Dodson that I had with a Kentucky fan and a UT fan after UNC and UK played contained more analysis than this article.

Deon Thompson is a senior and he dominated inside for the whole second half. It will be interesting to see if seniors like Chism and T Smith decide to make a name for themselves against UK down low. P Pat is good to great, but some of the younger guys can be abused.

UNC quit trying to run with UK and Wall had cramps but the biggest chip away at the lead was AFTER he was back.

UK cannot shoot over a decent zone. I know we almost never play that type of defense, but you could not do it last year against UK and you can this year.

If you were going to say they impressed you, and I wrote about how and why with some specificity (body control of Wall who makes shots while getting fouled, his speed, his court vision and passing, the passing of Cousins, the running off defensive rebounds that their bigs do) why not also talk about the second half?

I am not taking a shot here, I am curious. Did you watch them (UK) in their other games? Do you base your opinion of them off of one half against UNC? Do you think that playing games of Horse is what will help UT beat UK?

Very puzzled by your article. If you were unaware, I am a fan of your writing and linked the Keady article on here when you did not.

Yeah you are right, I was thinking about Syracuse. If you think UNC beat MSU handly you must have not watched the game. It was a few key rebounds late in the game and some wide open missed 3's that won that game for UNC, at UNC. I don't care who UK started, if the game was in Chapel Hill the outcome would have been different. Playing at home with a young team has a huge advantage. Its amazing how much some UT fans spend time talking up UK. Go jump on their bandwagon.

Don't want to jump on the UK bandwagon. Just calling 'em like I see 'em. Both UNC and UK were young'uns. We play a lot of seniors, so based on that we will win in a head to head match. Feel better now?

They play like that against us, we will lose by 15 at their place.

If you really look at that game, it was a Wall and Patterson show. They were very impressive in the first half and dropped off in the second. You had to be impressed with their defensive effort. If we played them now, at least based on the past two UT games, it would not be close. Hopefully, we will improve as the season goes on. Our experience should be a equalizing factor as they do have superior young talent.

Im not sure I've seen our experienced guys playing like they have any.

Wow to this whole article. I will admitt that Kentucky did look good in the first half but what about the 2nd half? You go ahead and crown UK as the SEC champs based on a home victory over another young team that is "riding the coat tails from last years team", that almost came back and beat those "awesome freshmen" all in their first true road game of the season in the biggest Rupp crowd ever??? Give me a break!!!! North Carolina couldn't even dribble the ball straight in the first half and looked scared. Do you think UT is going to have the same problems? I highly doubt it. True. John Wall will probably have his way with Maze / Goins or whoever else he faces but doesn't mean an automatic Kentucky victory. Terrible article!

The basket look like an ocean and he couldn't miss. He'd never do that again with a million other tires. Luck is all that 54 was.

Shoddy defense played a role in that game as well.

Yeah, it was pure luck that like 6 other teams had players who set career highs against UT. Perhaps not 54, but you get the point. UT's defense was horrible last year, and that has nothing to do with luck. It was a recurring theme.

How dare you bring logic and facts to this discussion.

IMO, the scary thing about this team is that by February this team will be a substantially different team than now. The defensive effort now compared to before the holiday break is 100% better than it was. They played great defense for the majority of the game against UNC.

Also the offense only gets better, with Cousins and Bledsoe's brains finally catching up to their athletic ability. The DDM is still in its developmental stages with these kids, which is obvious.

I don't by any means think UK winning is a foregone conclusion, but I think that what your seeing now is only a precursor to the end of this season.

It should be noted however that ALL of this, rides upon the back of John Wall. Without him, its obviously a different team.

A recurring note of Coach Cal--ride a start player as far as he can take you.

Humiliated them for 20 mins...not a good omen for the Vols...

which 20 minutes was that?

And if you're correct, then UNC "humiliated" UK for approximately 1 minute less than UK "humiliated" them.

And that must mean Syracuse obviously has more upside than UK, right? They beat UNC running away, on a neutral court. Hat surely would agree that this is more indicative than an early season win on your home court, right? You don't play any home games in the NCAA tourney.

Your conclusion about Kentucky based on one game, defined.

Kentucky goes as far as Wall takes them. He's just like Evans and Rose, who Cal let do everything and carry the team (He had CDR with Rose, too, which made them very deadly as a duo). People getting in a tizzy over one game doesn't make much sense and it ALWAYS happens. In 2005, we looked like a million dollars in Austin against the Longhorns and had a very good, but not great, team and season. Teams will go up and down as the season progresses and people shouldn't get over-analytical regarding a game or two (One of the reasons why I criticize the teeth gnashing of our last two games).

Kentucky has looked bad early and great for 10 minutes against a very young Carolina team that will be hard pressed to make it out of the first weekend in the NCAAs. I'll reserve judgment until I see some consistantcy one way or the other.

Un-believable that Griff draws that conclusion after one game. It doesn't matter how good KY looked in the first half - they only won by 2 points. UNC is young and overrated right now.

Yes, we can beat them, but the following needs to happen for us to be our best:

1. Hopson/Tatum need to be more consistent. They score 20+ one game and disappear the next game.
2. Chism/Smith need to put this team on their backs and carry us. Quit being so selfish and look to score. Chism could dominate inside if he wanted to.
3. Prince needs to go to the bench for good.
4. Continue to improve at PG.
5. Cut down the rotation from 10 players to about 8.

If I were forced to make a prediction I'd take an anti-Griff stance and say that Roy has his Heels playing better by March than Cal's Cats.
