This immigration bill is just amazing to me. It's like no one is listening to their constituents.

Senate Leaders Agree to Revive Immigration Bill - New York Times

My favorite comment . . .

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”At some point, Mr. Lott said, Senate Republican leaders may try to rein in “younger guys who are huffing and puffing against the bill.”
Hey Trent - you helmet haired, empty suit - if you actually had any vision, leadership or the ability to control your tongue, your party might actually still have a majority in the Senate.

the Senate is a lost cause, what few GOP with the backbone to stand against this are under tremendous pressure to cave to the President. It surprises me that Mitch McConnell is waffling and I'm disappointed in Lamar Alexander. The worst part about all this is the rhetoric being used against those who oppose this bill. If you're against amnesty and want to see current laws enforced first and the wall built second, you're a racist and a nativist.

Hopefully, this shamnesty bill will die a painful death in the house.

That's what is so amazing. I think this bill is a load of BS, but according to the President and the Senate leadership from my own party, I'm a complete dope that just doesn't understand the issue.

Aren't a majority of Americans in favor of some form of amnesty at this point?

Honestly, I don't know. It's not even that I am totally against all forms of amnesty. It's that I think any immigration reform that doesn't tighten border security significantly is completely worthless.

They simply do not care, and it is my understanding that most people wouldn't mind if current laws were enforced. I don't think that amnesty is all that popular. If it were we would have a bill by now.

I think I heard that a recent Rasmussen poll has support for this bill at 20%. That's only 1% higher than Harry Reid's approval rating, so no, the majority of Americans do not support amnesty.

I agree exactly with what you posted below. THE Party may want you and I to think we're ignorant, however I believe the party I have supported for the past 30 years is out of control, has left it's own pricipals in order to try and grow the special interest groups it panders to. Special interest groups and waste of money by the Dems are the reasons I've been a Republican. They have dropped the proverbial turd in the punchbowl and we need to toss them out and start from scratch. Rant over

If you are disappointed in him, you should have heard a radio interview he did on a local Nashville talk show last week. He was tripping over himself trying so hard to defend the bill. Absolute disgrace.

Yeah he was clammering like a fish outta water. Phil didn't really try to stick it to him because of their somewhat friendship I believe.

Hey GAVol, seriously, you need to watch Lou Dobbs. That guy is holding these politicians accountable, more so than even O’Reilly. It comes on @ 6pm Eastern and 3pm Pacific. Greatest show by far exposing both the sham that is border security and the uncontrollable flood that is illegal immigration. It's on CNN, I highly suggest you watch it if you aren't already.

By the way for the record, I am not a racist nor am I anti Immigrant; I am anti illegal immigrant. I believe in the enforcement of laws and the supreme right to sovereignty as a nation bound by those laws. I believe the current system of legal immigration is meeting both our economic and morally guiding principles when it comes to taking in new Americans. The situation on the border though is completely out of control. In this post 9/11 world we simply cannot be naïve in our feelings towards border security. From a purely economic standpoint taking in 12 to 20 million illegal aliens will be damaging to the economy and the core of our already faltering social services in this country. The financial cost in terms of benefits doled out to newly legalized nationals compounded by the number of extended family members currently living oversees seeking immediate citizenship would be crippling. Alas, the Republican Party would eventually cease to exist, going much the way of its predecessor the Whig party.

But you know what, if they would just build a fence and seal off the border completely, once and for all, I would be willing to look past legalizing 12-20 million people. Think about it, that’s a lot of people folks. The worse thing though and it looks like this will happen, is they are going to legalize them all and then not enforce the border. Think about it folks, for those of us old enough we already lived through this back in 86. Are we really naïve enough to believe our elected officials again? Especially when Ted Kennedy is the one spearheading the effort? Expect Lindsey Graham, the (so called) distinguish Senator from South Carolina to be soundly defeated in his next election.

Oh no :eek:hmy: Lou's on, gotta run.

Serious question....Is the whole point that it'd be cheaper to give amnesty than to deport all these illegals?

It's probably impossible to deport 12 - 20 milion people. However, if current laws were inforced and employers were given a little help with identifying the illegals (along with hefty fines for hiring them anyway....$50,000 - $100,000 per offense) a large percentage would take themselves back home.

It would be nice if they would secure the boarder first, but as we know, the great wall of Mexico was pre election bull crap.

The movie clearly states that the Mexican Army crossed the border without any problem!

Don't bring reason into this Red Dawn moment, WOLVERINES!

heres a thought...instead of building a wall from the pacific ocean to brownsville tx....take the land mines we have in stockpile unused and plant em on the border. Put up signs warning of the next 200 yards beyond this border point is mined....cheaper and more to the point IMHO.

Yeah, but the human rights people would be all over us. We really need to build this fence or the United States as we know it will eventually cease to exist. That doesn't mean we won't have a United States, it just won't be that united. If we continue to take on a large influx (12-20 million illegals) who know nothing of our language, culture and values the United States will eventually Balkanize. This country is going down the drain and no one cares. Bravo Congress, you sleazy jerks, you have sold out America once again!
