Things built, torn down and other projects.(Pictures)

Tom Petty was born in Gainesville, FL.
Tom Petty had the good sense to get out of Gainesville, FL.
Tom Petty was a "long haired redneck," a "hillbilly hippy," a "pot-smokin' good ol' boy."

@Orangeslice13 and the rest of you knowledgeable guys:

We are on our carpenter’s calendar for this fall to tear out and rebuild our back deck. It will probably be under 300 sq ft and only 18” or so above ground level.

We had not thought about using Trex etc., as we had heard about lots of problems. Now of course lumber is incredibly expensive while the mills get inventory back up. So:

(1) Did Trex etc go up as much as lumber? Or is it more competitive in price now?

(2) Have the current lines overcome all the initial problems? (mold, staining, finish issues, etc)

(3) And if you were adding a smallish deck to your own house, which would you use and why?

FWIW, I’d want to go with a line using a high proportion of recycled materials (plastic bags etc). We’ll be asking Rob these same questions as the time grows closer, but I figured I’d start here first.

thanks

Trex is up. It’s still more than lumber. But cheaper in the long run. That’s if you get the mid grade. The top grade is way more expensive than the mid with the only difference being the colors offered. The high grade has accents.
The new lines do not have the molding issues of the first lines but they do get hotter than 2 damnits in the sun. Like uncomfortable hot.
I have a cry once buy once attitude about most things. I don’t buy cheap fishing rods because they don’t last. Having said that only one of the many porches at my house isn’t trex and it was built before trex was an option. I will switch it to trex at some point. Bugs don’t eat it and it doesn’t rot so it will outlive me. I’m a fan of minimal repair. Even with the new deck coatings there’s going to be upkeep on wood.

Also I didn’t think you needed the plastic is going to kill us so recycling is good speech. You seem to be good there
Wut? lol

— I had three kids in “disposable” diapers. I have plenty of sins to atone for…

Anyway, I had read that some composites didn’t use much recycled material, and if so, I didn’t want to use those. Seemed pointless.

I’m building one in a couple weeks with the fancy pants fasteners. I’ll post pics
Are Trex etc decks installed over wood posts and joists, or is the entire installation composite?

—To others: yes, I could certainly Google this, but there’s so much crap on Google. I have a list of health-related sources that I trust, but it’s mind-blowing how much BS is out there.
