Things that make you feel old...

My first year at UT was Heath Shuler's first year as a starter, but my Vol memories go back further.

watching TV without remote control....meaning you had to get up and walk to the TV to change channels...with a dial...except there were only 3 channels so you still didn't have to move that much...and when you did the rabbit ears(antenna for the younger folk) had to be adjusted for every channel to get reception...

Signs that times are changing...

I went to see a Skynyrd show last year and people used cell phones instead of lighters.

And the 40th anniversary of the crash will be this October

Bag phones and dial up internet:)

I was in Knoxville when I saw my first bag phone. We were playing softball (city league) when an injury brought out the bag phone to call an ambulance. Still in school at the time iirc.

In 1994 I was living and working in Tokyo. At that time I was still young and subscribed to the paper version of the Knoxville News Sentinel to keep up with UT recruiting--and had my New York office pouch my KNS's to my Tokyo office. Once a week five or six of the papers were delivered to my office, and was thrilled to be able to catch up on Vol football news. That year I made a phone call from Tokyo to pick up John Ward's broadcast of the UT-florida game. When Ward's voice came over the line, I was excited for about 15 seconds and then he said, as I recall, that it was the second quarter and florida was winning 28-0. I couldn't belive it. Devastating. I saved a lot of money as I hung up seconds later. I think the internet was just starting to be rolled out that year.

Wait - sorry, but was anyone here around at Stokely Athletic Center when we played Kentucky in the mid 70s with Ernie and Bernie and the entire 12,000 fans were totally silent and held up Daily Beacons when the Wildcats were announced?

That's old!

I was there!!! We had to camp out for our tickets!

Was a Freshman at UT in 2004 and turn 31 tomorrow. Had a cell phone Freshman year, but it wasn't capable of anything but basic calls and we mostly used AOL Instant Messenger to communicate anyways. Being part of the last generation to grow up without internet, smartphones, and insane levels of connectivity is still a little weird. And my knees/back hurt..

As a teenager, I grew watching Jimmy Streeter, Willie Gault, and Bill Bates. I remember when the Vols played Georgia in '82. I saw Herschel for the first time and knew he was something special.

There was some great football played back then. Where has the time gone?
