Things that make you feel old...

30 years ago this month, Def Leppard and Poison were on the charts and I remember being in attendance for the Jerry Lawler - Austin Idol hair vs. hair steel cage match at the Mid South Coliseum.

Fast forward to April 2017, I am (i.e. my wife is dragging me) going to see Def Leppard/Poison in concert and now I feel old.

With that as a background, what memorable Vol moment makes you feel old when you look back on the number of years ago that it happened.

Mine was cutting class in high school to go out to my truck to listen to Peyton's announcement as to whether or not he was coming back to school. I got caught by the principal but he listened to the announcement with me in my truck. Since Peyton stayed, I avoided punishment. That was slightly over 20 years ago.

Mine was going to the airport with my Dad to meet the return of the victorious Vols after defeating the Texas Longhorns in the 1951 Cotton Bowl. We met and talked with one Doug Atkins who picked me up in his huge arms and talked to me like I was his little brother. He was the largest human being I had ever seen. I was six years old and I'll never forget it.

I can top that one. Drove over from West Tenn to see the Vols lose to Rutgers and then saying I would never go to another UT game. Vols beat ND the next week and the week after that, I drove to Jackson, MS to see the Vols get blown out in the 4th quarter by Ole Miss.:mf_surrender:

They were blown out before the 4th quarter, my friend. Dad and I drove to Jackson for that one.... Archie who? Archie from Drew, that's who... One of the worst defeats in Vol history I'm sad to say.

Jimmy Streater and the Vols barely losing in the Bluebonnet Bowl(a bowl that hasn't existed in 30 years and was played in the AstroDome), Mike Weaver knocking out Big John Tate at the Civic Colosseum in the 15th round in a heavyweight title fight in Knoxville and Dale Ellis dominating the SEC without ever shooting a 3, because the 3 didn't exist in college back then. Plus, The Scruffy Little City hosting the World's Fair and looking into Neyland while riding the giant ferris wheel, while UT was playing and beating Alabama for the 1st time in a decade. I could go on, but the effed up thing is ..... I don't remember anymore

I remember that ferris wheel. I went to the World's Fair with my parents, my sister, an aunt, and some cousins. Good times. Lol, remembering when the Sunsphere was new. Long time ago.

Knoxville has changed so much over the years. It's hard not to look just about anywhere and see what used to be. Nostalgia is what leaves you feeling old.

LOL, saw Lawler rassle in K ville while in college. He lost. Wrote him a gag letter that we Memphians had spent hard cash to see him. He, in turn, wrote back, sent Lawler postcards and a hand writtten letter apologizing that his mind was on a softball game he had upcoming back in Memphis. THE KING!!!!

That's crazy because I played against Lawler's Men's League Softball team in Bartlett, TN for a couple years. This was about 3 or 4 years ago, when he was still playing, before he had his Heart Attack. He played 1st base and was terrible, but his team was stacked.

You are 10 years off. The Archie Who game was in 1969. I'm talking about 1979. Hubert Simpson missed the team flight and Johnny flew him down to Jackson on a booster's plane and started him.

Close game until 4th quarter when a very mediocre Ole Miss Team blew out the 19th ranked Vols. The Rutgers and Ole Miss games bookended the blow out of a ranked Notre Dame team.

I remember when the pizza joint on the strip (can't remember the name) had all-you-can-eat-and-drink night for $7. It was Beast, but we didn't care.

I also remember Spicy's on the strip all-you-can-eat wings night. I regularly topped 40.

Godfather's or Gattis?

My bad. Anytime I see Ole Miss in Jackson, I just think 1969. That memory is, sadly, seared in my brain forever.

a. I got to see Peyton's freshman year live as UT
b. I remember when Patrick Dempsey, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Darius Rucker and John Cusack were young. We are very close in age.
c. Cassette tapes were the way to go when I was a teenager. Couple of families still liked using 8 track.
d. US Space Shuttle Challenger is launched on it's maiden flight the year I graduated from HS

I was there the day the VOLS first ran through the T sitting in section K with my dad (1965)

Less than a dozen people were closer to the launch pad than me the day Challenger exploded. I was sitting on the hood of my car next to the firetrucks at the fall back line. Had just taken a job with a NASA contractor the month before, and because I had a badge, I had freedom to get as close as I could. Dang. I'm old.

* Remembering when Elvis died.
* Making my own 'mix tape' by holding a tape recorder microphone up to a speaker.
* Knowing about songs changing tracks in the middle of said songs.
* One dial phone in the whole house, hanging on the kitchen wall, with a cord about 2 feet long...on a party line.
* Remembering when Ed 'Too Tall' Jones was a Dallas Cowboy and thinking that was a cool nickname.
* Turning 56 in a few months.
:thud:

Fall of 1975 I was a Freshman at UT and broke into Neyland with my girlfriend from Oak Ridge, Linda P., and we made woopee on the UT logo at midfield. Today, I am 60 and sound like a woopee cushion 24/7.

You Sir are my Hero!!
Sneakin' into Neyland and having sex on the UT logo has to be the ultimate high for a Vol fan...! :hi:

I am old enough to remember the "open end of the horseshoe". We sat in the bleacher stands there for the second Penn State game - ABC had a camera on a platform dangling from a crane over those bleachers. My buddies and I went up and stretched out and enjoyed the Vols crushing a good Penn State team. That was... 1972? 1973?

1971 was the first time Penn State came to Neyland and the Vols defense and special teams accounted for 21 or 28 points in a 31-11 rout. Vols had to put up lights in 72 for Penn State to come back and Vols won by a TD something like 28-21.

71 PSU team had Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell in their backfield. Both went on to have long and successful NFL Careers. But Conrad Graham outran Franco 80 yds to the end zone with an intercepted pitch on PSU's first offensive series.......and the rout was on.

I was there!!! We had to camp out for our tickets!

AS a Freshman I made friends with Jeannie at the UT Ticket office and man, she was one of my best friends at UT as she always put some special tix aside for me. Do not think I camped out for those seats however, it would have been worth it!

So that gives new meaning to the term "spikin' it" on the field ?

Nevertheless, an improvement over:

"Sarah, this is Sheriff Taylor. Get me Aunt Bee. Thelma Lou just had her baby and it it's the spittin' image of Gomer Pyle. Barney's on his way back to the boarding house to get his bullet. We've got to stop him."
