Third WR enters Portal - Nathan Leacock

If Spillman plays well, our linebacker Corp is looking nasty next year. I worry about speed with Telander. He scares me when he has to drop deeper than like ten yards, stiff in the hips.

We lose Norman-Lott, Omari Thomas, Elijah Simmons.
I hope it improves a lot. When Pili and Spillman went down, our LB play dropped considerably the rest of the year. Maybe one of more of the studs we signed this month will get enough practice in the Spring and Summer plus the S&C off season work will have them ready to play in September.

Trust Ol’ Hula on this one: if you saw the two WRs we have coming in, you’d realize this is the best decision Lea could have made.
I don't doubt that but they aren't going to be here for the playoff run. With this one sided attrition we better hope that room doesn't get hit with a rash of new injuries.

I agree with this one. Nimrod kind of stunk too but I wasn't necessarily concerned until Leacock jumped in as well. All 3 just add up at this point. In this new system, players aren't going to wait on development but then again it also helps programs like Tennessee because we can go find players who have actual game day experience in the portal versus recruiting stars and hoping they turn into the player we want.
Nimrod and Webb have played well enough for their positions o the depth chart. The fact Leacock wasn't getting snaps say the coaches had more faith in them than him. Both Webb and Nimrod played good enough last year when pressed into duty because of injuries. I think Leacock was a guy that couldn't find a position here. Can we likely replace them? Of course. Could possibly not having them for the playoffs hurt us? Definitely. I hope they stick around for the playoffs and honestly, I don't expect either of them to get snatched up anytime soon. Nimrod hurts bad as far as the OSD game is concerned with pretty much everyone in front of him dinged up. Isn't Brazell the only completely healthy main WR we have? Thornton, White and McCoy are all dinged up.

Good point. Nimrod's name came up the most. He did have some egregious drops but he also made a lot of plays and would get open.

I would like to get a Bru type of WR or a Hyatt speed type guy

Yeah Nimrod was really the only guy we lost that even moves the needle as far as a guy that can contribute even if he isn’t the first option. Hopefully Staley or someone is ready to go. Thornton can play slot also.

On topic Leacock wasn’t getting on the field unless it was a blow out. Made sense for him to move on.
Thornton isn’t a slot guy. We’ve tried that and he was irrelevant. Best we can do with him is keep him on the outside and throw him deep balls.

I mean he can play slot. Staff has said that Thornton also has said that. Now that said I absolutely agree he’s better on the outside.

All three of those guys stayed with the team and did not see their playing time go up. Chris Brazzell passed them all up on the depth chart. With Mike Matthews also in line to get more snaps next year these guys all saw the writing on the wall. I wish them well, but it is probably best for their careers to try to get reps somewhere else.

i doubt coaches are sweating those three, but i also doubt that Tennessee is going to be very aggressive in the portal this time around, even if that is contrary to what some people think
They are gonna have to be. 4 WR's transferring, Bru graduating, isn't Thornton graduating too? We absolutely have to go after a few Oline guys, Atleast 1 WR, DLine.

Yes he can play slot. Just isn’t the best idea I guess is what I’m trying to say. I think Thornton prefers not to play in the slot.

Tennessee STILL does NOT have a TRUE "Slot Receiver'...'Cept for Squirrel...who's "Questionable at Best" for next Saturday.

Need SPEED!!!!!!
We do. Staley, Dotson & RaJackson all capable of being slot studs. Mike Matthews also can slide inside some sets(all the big time WRs move around), and also Boo & Seldon capable of receiving those reps in the future(at least it was brought up as a possibility in when both were signed) for some sets. Not to mention Brazzell made some plays out the slot against Vandy, and big time TD against Bama came from the slot.

Nathan Leacock out today along with Chas Nimrod and Kaleb Webb.

What is going on and should we be concerned or is this a way for us to free up spots for incoming transfers?
Wide Receiver Transfer U?

Not terribly worried. JH attracts QB and WR talent.

It's concerning to me that it's year 4 and Squirrel is the only Huepel WR recruit I can think of that has panned out.
We're ok. The portal has saved us, at several spots.
Shouldn't we be depending on Heupel to develop a 4* WR at some point not named Squirrel?
No. The head coach doesn't usually develop players. But we should absolutely expect him to recruit the top-tier level talent at wideout.

If you meant Josh should be recruiting better, then you're correct. Pope should be the one developing players. Much harder to develop a player into a great player than it is to just recruit a great player.
We weren't exactly taking full classes for years due to sanctions.
