This one is on Barnes

Only thing I know is maybe Phillips didn't know the foul situation and thought he would shoot FTs. No other reason to not dunk it.

So pass up a 2 pt dunk, for the chance to shoot 2 free throws and end up with the same # of points????? Makes no sense, that was about trying to run the clock out without giving them the ball back.

How is that on Barnes??? Barnes jumped all over Phillips for not taking the shot.
It’s just another example of the totally reprehensible lack of knowledge on this board. Casual fans making casual statements about which they have no clue. It’s why I’ve decide to forego even trying to educate or explain my take on these issues. They’re incapable of understanding because they think they know, but they don’t.

So a kid makes a mistake and you want Barnes to go all Junction Boys on him? Yeah, that would work just fine in today's climate considering the portal is here to stay. Gotta be a real boost in recruiting, too. Kids today love that style of coaching.

Nobody will know what Barnes said or didn't say in the huddle during the TO. Either Phillips was told to score and he didn't (for whatever reason is beyond me) OR Barnes didn't make it clear to the player what to do if the run out worked. Either one is inexcusable. Period.

Bottom line is an 18 year old has to be coached to understand situational basketball. That's why a lot of coaches don't want freshmen on the floor at crunch time. Barnes put a freshman on the floor at crunch time who does not understand situational basketball. This one is on him.
First of all you have to put your best players on the court to inbound the ball. We had trouble just last week with experienced players I recall. Only thing against Barnes. Is he has a bunch of idiots as fans.

It really is that simple. I can't understand why fans cant understand. That's for conveying what I could not.

I cant believe that when Barnes drew up the play to get Phillips the ball going to the basket, RB didnt communicate to him, "take it to the basket". The play is designed to get an open basket not just get the ball in. JP didnt break toward the in bounds pass but away and toward the basket. With Vandy not having anyone back, you had to know that play was gonna be open for a score provided he was open for the pass.

It really is that simple. Almost like it is so easy, a freshman can do it.

No way in hell that play was drawn up for Phillips to shoot. He started jogging around the free throw line so he would get fouled. There's not a little leaguer to an NBA player on earth that wouldn't have taken that shot unless he was told not to.

Go back a little further to 19 secs left in the game and Zeigler had a one on one layup he didn't take. The Vandy defender ran out of juice and ZZ could have easily went around him and laid it in, but he ran it back to half court to draw the foul.

And ya'll think both players just decided to NOT take very high percentage shots that would have put the game out of reach. Give me a break.

There was no foul called when ZZZ got the loose ball at half court. The ref under the Vandy basket blew the play dead when ZZZ got the ball because JJJ was rolling on the floor in pain. There is no way to tell what would have happened in that situation if JJJ doesn't get hurt, or if the ref let the play run out to see if ZZZ had a breakaway. It was a bad break for us, losing JJJ and whatever time run off/points might have happened. By the way, the announcers did a horrible job of explaining this when they came back from the timeout.

Vandy was 11-12 coming into the game . Not even a .500 team. It should not have come down to the last 30 seconds---the game was lost a few seconds after tip off. A team like Vandy shouldn't have even been in the game with them, but had their way with them all game long.

Phillips had the shot but didn't take it to run the clock. Good job Team. good hustle and got mauled the whole second half.
Sometimes hot shot Freshmen think they know more than the coach and act accordantly. That was a big problem with JC in football, even when was a Junior. Sometimes its takes more coaching for some players more than others. Performance is the key and our players did not perform well in the last few seconds of the game.

I tend to think that Phillips is more of a sponge than him thinking that he is a can’t do no wrong hot shot. I wish that he was a little more selfish. He has the most talent of anybody on the roster, but is somewhat hesitant to take the spotlight. I wish we could have him for another 2 or 3 years, but just one more will have a huge impact on 2023-24.

That not taking the dunk play might light a fire with him. If he emerges he could carry TN through the rest of the season.
