When Philips received the ball, he dribbled right in front of Barnes. Barnes could have yelled at him to ice it. We will not know until Barnes tells us. To protect his player, he
probably should fess up so Philips wont be criticized.
I agree with what you are saying for the most part. It’s also very clear the way we play so timid, overly structured, and conservative on offense comes from rick Barnes. That mindset he has instilled is why Julian Phillips did not dunk that ball sealing the win. It’s also why we haven’t broken 70 since nam.Barnes drew up a play that got his player a free dunk and he doesn't shoot. Barnes calls timeout to save his team from 5 second violation. We get the ball to our best free throw shooter in our last possession. Don't see how this is on Barnes..

If you can’t watch that final play and see that literally every aspect of Phillips body language immediately communicated he was worrying about what Barnes thought then idk what to tell you. All he was thinking about was not messing up or making what Barnes thought was the wrong play. I’ll let you believe that Barnes empowers his guys to play with instinct and confidence but the truth is they are robots out there playing not to mess up or upset him. Passing up on a dunk because you are overthinking he wants you holding the ball or worrying about shooting an open shot when you shouldn’t is the type of garbage that happens.Lord knows there is stuff to criticize but I never thought I'd see grown adults who supposedly know basketball actually try to blame Barnes for a 5 star NBA prospect not doing the most basic, athletic, reflex thing that a basketball player would do in that situation. If he froze, that's all on him, not Barnes.
Some say it is on a player, but why was Tennessee anywhere close to the commode doors regarding score?
Why is the supposedly number 6 team in the country playing close games with teams with which it should not be anywhere near playing close games?
Some will say it happens, but does it happen so consistently with very good to great teams?
Why is it always the players when one did not perform at the end and the coach evidently pointed out to him and thus, the rest of the world? Where was the coaching many times this season when 3 pointers would not go down?
If it is lack of inside players, why can the right inside players not be brought in? This is a great staff correct?
Maybe it is just a good way to make money until retirement and hey, it's better than any other coach we had except one, but we're not North Carolina so I guess we should just suck it up.

I was thinking the same thing last night. Success brings expectations and each and every loss hurts. When we're mediocre, we expect to lose and no one really cares all that much. This thread brings flashbacks from the 90s when fans were beside themselves at Phil for losing 1 or maybe two games per year. It's utterly bizarre.

Haha who ever said Phillips is NBA ready? I sure didn’t. But it doesn’t shock me Barnes is throwing his own players under the bus when all they are trying to do is fit into his iron fist regime. Then he sure as hell isn’t NBA ready then. And I guess that blew up in his face since Barnes went off because he didn’t do what he should have.
Um, they broke 70 in 4 of the last 7. Be mad all you want, lord knows I am at the missed opportunities this team has had this year, but don't be that exaggerative with something that's easily debunked.I agree with what you are saying for the most part. So in this dumbass scenario of yours......Barnes yells at Phillips to "ice it"....then immediately goes off on him for not dunking it....
So I guess the fact that Barnes was visibly upset about running the perfect play for an uncontested dunk, only to have the superstar freshman decide to run away from the basket was on him? Was it on him that our normally reliable free throw shooter bricked the front end of a one on one? The team fought a hard fought war In a game where the refs swallowed their whistles again, but went brain dead in the last minute. Vandy's shooters were on fire most of the game. They hit several contested threes. I am massively disappointed in this overall TEAM loss. That does include the contribution from the coaching staff.Phillips had the shot but didn't take it to run the clock. Good job Team. good hustle and got mauled the whole second half.
Barnes has brought a certain amount of expectations now. He's obviously a good coach because this team isn't really all that talented from top to bottom. They could play a lot smarter..

Or, hear me out, "ice it" means "ice the game" which would be to score and put the game out of reach. You are correct. My immediate reaction was that there is no way in hel_ a player with Julian's skills would pass up a dunk unless he was told not to
Some players totally surprise me the way they respond.
