This one is on Barnes

When Philips received the ball, he dribbled right in front of Barnes. Barnes could have yelled at him to ice it. We will not know until Barnes tells us. To protect his player, he
probably should fess up so Philips wont be criticized.

So in this dumbass scenario of yours......Barnes yells at Phillips to "ice it"....then immediately goes off on him for not dunking it....

Barnes drew up a play that got his player a free dunk and he doesn't shoot. Barnes calls timeout to save his team from 5 second violation. We get the ball to our best free throw shooter in our last possession. Don't see how this is on Barnes..
I agree with what you are saying for the most part. It’s also very clear the way we play so timid, overly structured, and conservative on offense comes from rick Barnes. That mindset he has instilled is why Julian Phillips did not dunk that ball sealing the win. It’s also why we haven’t broken 70 since nam.

Is this real life?

Lord knows there is stuff to criticize but I never thought I'd see grown adults who supposedly know basketball actually try to blame Barnes for a 5 star NBA prospect not doing the most basic, athletic, reflex thing that a basketball player would do in that situation. If he froze, that's all on him, not Barnes.

You still do not answer the questions.

It is quite understandable that there are losses from bad games. However, this team does it far too often which is what has been obviously pointed out.

How many times has bama fallen off on a football game and lost over say the last decade and a half? Not very often which sucks for teams not bama. Unfortunately, they have been great and coaching has a lot to do with that.

We have some great talent here now and over the past few years in bball, but we do not have that winning formula. In fact, it is my opinion that the last time we were close to that was with the present auburn coach. We are confident in our football team because we now have some good talent and now good coaching. We have not had a lot of good talent over the last decade and a half because we have not had good coaching which includes recruiting.

Let me ask you one more question that you will likely not try to answer as has been shown here in this thread since you continually point out that good teams will lose which in no way has been disputed (that is, your red herring) as that is not equal to losing too often with darn good talent which has actually happened and was pointed out.

Look at Tennessee's losses to the ky jellys, the fl t**ds, and the vanderbilt commode doors just this year for example remembering this as of this week is (supposedly) the number 6 team in the country and formerly ranked higher. There is no reason whatsoever that 3 games should have been lost. I'll give away one to sooth your pained mind because there is not and there has not been a dispute about losing one game which indeed does happen sometimes. What, pure genius would sick naban do if this was happening?

If you can’t watch that final play and see that literally every aspect of Phillips body language immediately communicated he was worrying about what Barnes thought then idk what to tell you. All he was thinking about was not messing up or making what Barnes thought was the wrong play. I’ll let you believe that Barnes empowers his guys to play with instinct and confidence but the truth is they are robots out there playing not to mess up or upset him. Passing up on a dunk because you are overthinking he wants you holding the ball or worrying about shooting an open shot when you shouldn’t is the type of garbage that happens.

Some say it is on a player, but why was Tennessee anywhere close to the commode doors regarding score?

Why is the supposedly number 6 team in the country playing close games with teams with which it should not be anywhere near playing close games?

Some will say it happens, but does it happen so consistently with very good to great teams?

Why is it always the players when one did not perform at the end and the coach evidently pointed out to him and thus, the rest of the world? Where was the coaching many times this season when 3 pointers would not go down?

If it is lack of inside players, why can the right inside players not be brought in? This is a great staff correct?

Maybe it is just a good way to make money until retirement and hey, it's better than any other coach we had except one, but we're not North Carolina so I guess we should just suck it up.

where are Donnie Tindall and Cuonzo Martin when we need them?

Then he sure as hell isn’t NBA ready then. And I guess that blew up in his face since Barnes went off because he didn’t do what he should have.

A JP dunk with a clear path to the goal puts you up by 2 possessions with ~10 sec left in the game. Vandy can hit a 3 and you are still up 1 with under 5 sec on the clock.

This thread brings flashbacks from the 90s when fans were beside themselves at Phil for losing 1 or maybe two games per year. It's utterly bizarre.
I was thinking the same thing last night. Success brings expectations and each and every loss hurts. When we're mediocre, we expect to lose and no one really cares all that much.

Barnes is the whipping boy for all things Tennessee Basketball. Nothing wrong with fair criticism, but I believe that some folks in our fanbase have only been watching Tennessee basketball for the last 5 years or so. At least Barnes gives us a reason to watch.

Haha who ever said Phillips is NBA ready? I sure didn’t. But it doesn’t shock me Barnes is throwing his own players under the bus when all they are trying to do is fit into his iron fist regime.

Barnes has brought a certain amount of expectations now. He's obviously a good coach because this team isn't really all that talented from top to bottom. They could play a lot smarter..

Um, they broke 70 in 4 of the last 7. Be mad all you want, lord knows I am at the missed opportunities this team has had this year, but don't be that exaggerative with something that's easily debunked.

You are correct. My immediate reaction was that there is no way in hel_ a player with Julian's skills would pass up a dunk unless he was told not to

Some players totally surprise me the way they respond.

We all forget that they are mostly 18 to 22 year old boys. Of course none of us made any mistakes when we were 18 to 22. 🤣

Phillips had the shot but didn't take it to run the clock. Good job Team. good hustle and got mauled the whole second half.
So I guess the fact that Barnes was visibly upset about running the perfect play for an uncontested dunk, only to have the superstar freshman decide to run away from the basket was on him? Was it on him that our normally reliable free throw shooter bricked the front end of a one on one? The team fought a hard fought war In a game where the refs swallowed their whistles again, but went brain dead in the last minute. Vandy's shooters were on fire most of the game. They hit several contested threes. I am massively disappointed in this overall TEAM loss. That does include the contribution from the coaching staff.

How can you say they are not talented?

Julian a 5*
JJJ 5*
Santi All-SEC
ZZZ All-SEC defensive player
Awaka (all-underrated SEC player)
ON senior player of the week

Biggest drawback is that sometimes they don't think. This is a killer mentality.

Too much sense to post here! GBO!

Or, hear me out, "ice it" means "ice the game" which would be to score and put the game out of reach.

There were some MASSIVE mental lapses by young guys tonight.

ZZ driving the lane vs their big 2x before finally learning to kick out. Missing a bunny late.
Awaka trying to go up on their big unnecessarily. He was having a heck of a game, but pushed too much.
Phillips missing some defensive switches allowing at least 1 easy layup, then not dunking at the end.

Then you have O throwing it into Phillips' back and again trying silly fade jumpers.

We missed several scoring opportunities. Gave up some silly baskets. There are some guys who, you can tell, haven't played much because of defensive lapses. Ves looked to miss the cover at the end, but he's one of our best defenders. Makes me think he had to pick up slack for someone else missing another assignment.

Our problem isn't toughness, effort, or ability. It's the stupid things we do, mostly on offense, that keep games close and then make them losses. We've been MANIC on O lately vs these scrappy, but bad, teams. We're letting their out of control chaos dictate our offensive game.
