This sinner says no to Bobby Petrino - James Franklin? I'm being won over.

While he is a better coach than our current one, UT can do better. Franklin has proven he can get Vandy to a bowl game. While that is success in and of its own it takes a lot more to get what UT wants.

You must mean, what we the fans want. UT has not done everything to show what they want.- and they are losing dollars because of it.

I agreed with some of you until recently that Franklin was all talk, style over substance. That was certainly my opinion, but what he has done this year after bouncing back after the UGA debacle has swayed me. He won at a decent Ole Miss team this weekend and has Vandy in good shape. I think we forget just how traditionally horrible that program has been. People say Cut winning 6 at Duke is a joke because they havent beaten anyone, but Duke has been a 1-2 win program, maybe 3 wins, recently. Regardless of who you beat, if Vandy wins 8 this year, we cant say Franklin isnt a good coach anymore. His team has been competitive in almost every game the past 2 years and seems well coached. I dont like the guy but I think we have to give credit where credit is due.

I'm not saying I want Petrino but some people are hypocrites. They want to be forgiven for their own sins but they will hold someone else's sins against them for the rest of their life.

I agree the same people who do not like him for leaving jobs in the middle of the night will be expecting our next coach to leave their current job before a bowl game.

I should clarify that Franklin would not be one of my top choices, but I wouldnt riot if they hired him and I do think he is good coach. If they hire Smart I'd be irate. I want Gruden, Del Rio, Fitzgerald, Jay Gruden, to name a few, as my first tier hires. Second tier hires imo that I'd be fine with are Tuberville, Strong, Golden. Franklin would be in that group as well. My first tier group is the is longer than the list I gave and there may be some who have interest that I would add.

As I was driving this morning I heard the talking heads at 104.5 the zone out of Nashville speaking of the potential of Petrino taking the helm.

I'm chief among sinners. Though forgiven there are consequences for my sins.
Mr. Petrino is facing his consequences as well.
Morality matters. You can't expect young people to walk with integrity and do the right things and yet forsake integrity yourself. Who will respect such a leader?

No to Petrino.

However, the more they talked about James Franklin the more I was being won over by the idea.

He has enthusiasm and fire. Everyone is calling him the Bruce Pearl of college football. We know that's not enough. But he's also proving his ability in recruiting and, now, in winning in the SEC. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.

Of course I want Gruden like the rest. But staring in the face of reality......James "Bruce Pearl" Franklin is starting to have a nice ring to it.

From John Adams article (and I agree with him):
I realize some people are offended by the circumstances that resulted in the former Arkansas coach being unemployed. The synopsis: He had an affair with a young woman whom he also put on the back of his motorcycle as well as the athletic department's payroll. One more thing: He lied about the relationship to his boss.

Counterpoint: He wins games. Lots of them.

In weighing Petrino's off-the-field baggage against his on-the-field success, it's worth noting that he isn't the first prominent coach to socialize with a woman outside his immediate household. It's also worth mentioning that lying is simply a business technique for most coaches.

But it's not as though you would be asking Petrino to marry you or baby-sit your kids. You would just be asking him to do a job.

Do you check the integrity of your pest-control guy? Do you do a background check on your roofer? And in your last conscious thought before the anesthesia is administered, do you wonder about your surgeon's character or his skill?

I don't mean to dismiss integrity as a virtue. I just want to put the situation in perspective.

UT football is in danger of falling off the national map. It's on the verge of four losing seasons in five years. It can't afford to make the wrong hire.

Based on what Petrino accomplished at Arkansas, UT would be foolish not to consider him. He faced some of the same challenges there that he would face at Tennessee yet succeeded quickly and dramatically, improving Arkansas' record in each of his four seasons and taking it to a No. 5 national ranking in his last year.

Whom else that UT could get (not counting Gruden, of course) has better credentials for the UT job?

Adams left out of course the pride of the liberals Bill Clinton too. I am all for hiring Petrino.....structure his contract to crucify him if he bolts but I would hope he has learned his lesson. He would have us back on top in no time at all...he has proven it and that is what we need. Kentucky hire a snake for a HC in basketball....and nobody gives a damn....so be it.

And Franklin has proven nothing...absolutely nothing...he needs to swim a little longer before he deserves a big time program gig and pay raise.

I guess it doesn't matter that he violated state and federal hiring laws at a public funded university?

I can't believe this! Petrino is a POS. He screwed Atlanta and Arkansas. He has no loyalty to anyone other than himself. If UT hires this guy,I hope they lose every game,oh,wait, they're doing that NOW.

He didn't screw Arkansas, he screwed his assistant or whatever she was. He didn't want to leave, Arkansas fired him.

I`ve been yelling we need a young, energetic, and charismatic coach for weeks. (I will omit black since I will be called racist.)This would be a home run in my opinion. We could get Franklin relatively cheap, and then say"here`s a blank check. Pick the best staff anywhere". He would recruit lights out,and bring much-needed excitement back to Kville. Who could outrecruit him or outcoach his all-star staff? Call me crazy, racist,or whatever. I freakin live for Tennessee Football. After Franklin stomps Dools Saturday, yall come back and talk 2 me! Go Vols!!

I know I have posted on this thread that I would be ok with Franklin and that he is a good coach, but I just re-watched some old press clips from last year and, yeah.... I am not a fan. If he can lead UT to titles though, I'd deal with it

Franklin is a decent coach and a very good motivator but he is no better then probably 50 other college coaches. Also even if we just contact him whether we actually offer or not he will be squealing about turning us down. I don't want to hear about a coach at Vanderbilt turning us down even if not true he will say it for the press. I would completely avoid him if I was Dave Hart.

If Gruden turns us down, go for Franklin IMO there are few better coaching prospects out there that are realistic.

Even Mike Farrel said that Franklin would be trying out for his job next Saturday.

I would be 100% behind the hire

Seems like the idea of Petrino is coming around.

Starting to hear alot more support for Petrino in the last week or so.

Even Hyams said today that he would hire Petrino.

I would disagree with this big time. Vanderbilt has had coach after coach after coach that just could not get it done. Bobby Johnson helped them turn the corner but it's been Franklin's team for two years now and they're 4-3 in the SEC. And a very real possibility of being 5-3 after the Tennessee game. They're bowl eligible right now even if they lose their last two games. And he doesn't even have what most would consider a top tier Quarterback in Rodgers.

This cat is getting it done better than anybody before him. Again, we're talking about Vanderbilt here. Vanderbilt!

As for this fan....I'll turn my head and be a hold out until Petrino is gone. I love the man and, as a sinner, sympathize with his fall - but you don't reward a guy who did such. It sends a poisonous message to kids in my opinion. If one of the kids gets busted for something immoral how can they respect him when he disciplines them? I'm not saying he should never be allowed to coach again at a high level. But not at Tennessee. Not this soon. Let him serve his time for a while.

Integrity is more important to me than football. It'll be a black eye hire for Tennessee if they go that route. No thank you.

This is the part of Adam's position which I would argue against. When a coach gets hired there are contractual obligations. The bug man has a contractual obligation to kill certain pests at my home. The roofer has a contractual obligation to put the correct roof on my house. The anesthesiologist has a contractual obligation not to kill me.

The head football coach has a contractual obligation to represent the University in all facets of his life. They know going in that if they breach that obligation then there are consequences. The head coach is the most visible figurehead at the University. He is a leader of men. He sets the tone for integrity and professionalism. He is the University. Do most know who the President is at Alabama without going to google? But they know Nick Saban.

And yet even in the end morality matters to me with my bug man, roofer, and anesthesiologist too. If I know that any of these guys are without integrity then be sure I will choose someone else. And many times I will do checks on people who are going to do work for me.

I don't see Petrino being able to go into the houses of high school kids and convince the moms and grandmoms of most of them that he will be taking care of their young man. Right or wrong almost all will think is he out somewhere trying to dip his pen in the wrong ink.
As for Franklin, he can coach and has done a good job at VU. But does anyone really think he could unite the VolNation? I may be wrong but I just don't see it.

I'm trying to understand...who the hell has James Franklin ever beaten in his career? I think the guy is a loud mouth self promoter that gets a high amount of press because he's at Vanderbilt. He's not entirely special or great as a coach. If he ever beats some big boys other than the SEC bottom dwellers I'll be impressed. For all the press he gets here, I'd take many other coaches over Franklin...there are many that are just flat out better. I'll throw out one Jim Harbaugh...won at a more prestigious academic institution and is a great pro coach too. The Franklin hype is just bizarre.
