This year will be a success if...... Be a disappointment if........

This season is already a success. There's no one here that honestly believed UT would be 7-0 going into the Kentucky game.

Even if the Vols drop one or two games, I don't believe it will be the result of the other coach out scheming CJH.

It's already a success for me ,but I'll be foaming at the mouth watching them beat the pee out of herbie's boys in the Championship game. Just got that feeling about THE HOOK.

As I started thinking about this year's season BEFORE the season even started looking at all the VolNation posts and what people thought what the season would bring etc.... etc.....

MOST Vol fans had the same line of thinking that Tennessee had a 5-2 record W(Candy, 3Non conference, Mizzou) L(UGA Bama) all the rest of the 5 games were "toss ups". Again MOST vol fans thought 3-2 in those games maybe 4-1 with losses to LSU and maybe FU or Pitt and Kentucky etc..... and all the other combinations.

SOoooooooooo....This season will be a success if what? My thought is that this season will be a success going 10-2 and playing in the Sugar, Cotton or Orange bowl New Years Six bowl. Yes I know this means we lose to Kentucky, UGA or USCe. I know others will have different expectations and their reasoning. I am just trying to remember what I expected before the seasons snapped VERY hopeful but realistic,

This season is a failure if we lose to UGA AND USCe AND Kentucky ( I highly doubt we will but injuries (heaven forbid) or other things could happen. I might throw in there a loss to a bowl team like Clemson or Micheegan or TCU.

Let me hear your thoughts as to what you think this season is? Is not getting into the playoffs 11-1 team and MAJOR disappointment? Losing in the SEC championship to Bama by like 21 points? Or this year has been great no matter how the last 5 games go 1-4 or what?
This team was projected at 6 wins before the season start. The fact that we are 7-0 and 3 of those wins are against Bama, UF and LSU already makes this season a success. No one in there right mind would have guessed we would when been 7-0 at this point in the season. I seen many people say we would be lucky to be 2-2 between bama, LSU, UF and UG. I think at this point we are playing with house money for rest of the season. Everyone wanted to see growth from last year to this year, well we have all seen that.

This season has reunited Vol fans into one big happy family again. This season has brought the Vols back into positive media attention. Our team beat our most hated rivals and made the rest of the sports world wish they were us. This season has success written all over it. I still smell cigar smoke.

Anything less than 11 wins will be a disappointment but wont be a failure

For me a successful season now is to put 2007 to bed for good. What I mean by that is we have done beat Bama there is one, now win 10+ games and go play for a SEC Championship.

Expectations are vastly different from before the year til now. Just the way it is. 10-2 would be a disappointment now. 10-2 is something everyone woulda been thrilled by before the season. 11-1, 12-0. Those are the expectations now.

Once again, we have entered a realm where preseason expectations no longer matter.

We have climbed the mountain.

Anything more than 1 loss at this point is going to be devastating. We fall off now and drop a couple we shouldn't , the off-season is going to be "same old Tennessee". To hell with that. The Alabama game changed everything. Really the LSU game before that. All the preseason crap stopped mattering. Here we are, deal with us.
"Devastating" LOL

Look, honestly, I will trade a loss in late November for wins over Pitt, Florida, LSU, and Bama. I would even trade two losses to teams we should beat in exchange for those four wins.

It is simply worth it.

Will we all gnash our teeth after a loss? Absolutely. We're fanatics. It's what we do. And some of us will go beyond the pale and start insulting our lads or shouting to fire some of our coaches. Because we're not always the good kind of fanatics.

It will still have been a success. If we end up 9-3 at this point, it will still have been a very successful season.

But our expectations have nonetheless changed. Because the lads convinced us: THEY can do more. They are capable of so much more. They are capable of 10-2 in their sleep, 11-1 for sure, and maybe even 12-0.

Really, they have no limits. They are that good. And we're here for them.

So stop the talk of failure. There is no failure in the '22 Vols. We may hit a roadblock at some point, maybe two, but we are not by any stretch of the imagination failing.

Go Vols!

This is the best football season in a long time, so its already in the success column.

I don't really base that judgement on wins and losses, although that is obviously important. The most important thing to me is that the Vols play like they belong on the same field as Alabama, UGA, UF, etc. If the Vols are competitive, then I know they will win some of those big games. That is all that really matters to me. Make it a game worth watching and I will be content. In the end, the Vols will win some and lose some, and maybe get a championship every now and then.

We would have to lose to Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina for me to consider this year any type of failure.

Not me.

If someone said to me, "listen, we're going to beat Florida. And we're going to beat LSU at their place. And we're going to beat Bama. But we're going to lose to UGa, and South Carolina, and the Wildkittens. We're gonna end up 9-3."

You know what I would've said?

SIGN US UP!

I wouldn't have believed them, because who beats Bama but loses to USCe and Ky? But I would've accepted that bargain in a heartbeat.

So no. Failure shouldn't even be in our lexicon from this point on. This year is a rousing success by any measure.

Go Vols!

I thought at the beginning of the year that 8-4 was the floor and 10-2 was the ceiling. I’m going to say now that anything less than 10-2 would be a failure…….and if one of those 2 losses was to the goofball at USCjr, then 10-2 might be considered a failure.

There seems to be 2 perspectives here. I thought OP was asking from TODAY moving forward and that’s how I answered. At the beginning of the season, 8-4 and win a bowl game was successful IMO. But if 7-0 today ends the season at 8-4 … that means we lost 4 of the last 5 … and when has that ever been a good thing ? And it also means we are losing some games we should win.

this year is already ahead of expectations... but things could go the other direction if we get beat by KY, SC, Mizzo, or Vandy

For me, it's already a HUGE success. I'm easy to please. 2-10 with wins over Florida and Bama, and I would've been happy. But the season Tennessee is having is totally off the charts and is like a fantasy somehow becoming reality.

The only way it would be a failure would be if I woke up and this was all just a dream during a coma from a multiple fatality car accident and we actually lost to Florida, Bama, LSU, and UT Martin.

This season will be a success if…it ended right now, everything else is just nice to have. Beating Bama and UF in year 2 are massive milestones.

Hell!! Bye most accounts, even before the first lick delivered in fall practice, this season is already a success.

This season is already a success from my stand point. The only way the wheels come off is if we somehow lose to Vandy. Don't laugjh, Butch Jones' last 9-3 season we were on cloud 9 until the wheels fell off capped by a loss to Vandy.
