This year will be a success if...... Be a disappointment if........

This season is already a success from my stand point. The only way the wheels come off is if we somehow lose to Vandy. Don't laugjh, Butch Jones' last 9-3 season we were on cloud 9 until the wheels fell off capped by a loss to Vandy.
I was there for North Texas, Memphis State, GA State and a few other embarrassing losses. It can and does happen. Take nothing for granted.

Good question.
Also people need to be fair to themselves.

It's already a huge success.

And NOW that we know what type of team we have , we should also know that it's okay to "move the goal posts".

Right before the season I expected 9-3.

Now I think we're the best team in the country.

15-0 is the expectation 🤔...
Yeah...

Failure would be losing to anyone else other than Georgia.

As I started thinking about this year's season BEFORE the season even started looking at all the VolNation posts and what people thought what the season would bring etc.... etc.....

MOST Vol fans had the same line of thinking that Tennessee had a 5-2 record W(Candy, 3Non conference, Mizzou) L(UGA Bama) all the rest of the 5 games were "toss ups". Again MOST vol fans thought 3-2 in those games maybe 4-1 with losses to LSU and maybe FU or Pitt and Kentucky etc..... and all the other combinations.

SOoooooooooo....This season will be a success if what? My thought is that this season will be a success going 10-2 and playing in the Sugar, Cotton or Orange bowl New Years Six bowl. Yes I know this means we lose to Kentucky, UGA or USCe. I know others will have different expectations and their reasoning. I am just trying to remember what I expected before the seasons snapped VERY hopeful but realistic,

This season is a failure if we lose to UGA AND USCe AND Kentucky ( I highly doubt we will but injuries (heaven forbid) or other things could happen. I might throw in there a loss to a bowl team like Clemson or Micheegan or TCU.

Let me hear your thoughts as to what you think this season is? Is not getting into the playoffs 11-1 team and MAJOR disappointment? Losing in the SEC championship to Bama by like 21 points? Or this year has been great no matter how the last 5 games go 1-4 or what?

At this point anything worse than 11-1 with at NY6 bowl appearance will be a "letdown" given how we started.

This season is a success no matter what happens from this point. The program is back in the conversation and competitive with the top teams in the country. My goal for the team was to become relevant again. This team met that goal very quickly. Everything that happens form this point forward is gravy.

Unbelievable to even be where we are. I actually feel for some schools. Fans will expect these miraculous results in year 2 after they swap coaches and as we know from multiple coaching transitions we have been through that is not reality. How in the world we got this lucky from getting worse and worse to National Prominence in year 2 with an "Identity" is incredible and so with an Identity it doesn't seem like lightning in a bottle. We can sustain a top 10-15 team with our fair share of sticking nose in there to play for a conference championship. So yes assuming we dont crap the bed against Missouri, South Carolina and Kentucky. Wow. The Georgia game is house money. If we lose my gosh it will sting but also a year removed from their national championship and we will be playing them for 1st slot in the SEC east is beyond our dreams.

This team was projected at 6 wins before the season start. The fact that we are 7-0 and 3 of those wins are against Bama, UF and LSU already makes this season a success. No one in there right mind would have guessed we would when been 7-0 at this point in the season. I seen many people say we would be lucky to be 2-2 between bama, LSU, UF and UG. I think at this point we are playing with house money for rest of the season. Everyone wanted to see growth from last year to this year, well we have all seen that.

I had us 7-5 to 9-3 with 7-5 being acceptable but not answering the question of if this thing was really turning around, 8-4 being a good season, 9-3 being great progress and anything better than that being very unlikely and an incredible success.

I thought 8-4 or 9-3 were most likely because the team last year exceeded expectations in wins, but more importantly in how they played in the games. There was no quitting, the players actually looked better game to game, and there wasn’t the sort of head scratching game management that had me wondering what the coaches were thinking.

So I was cautiously optimistic but there was no way I had the season playing out like it has.

39CFCCC9-EEDA-4A1E-B9A6-B328AD2B9FFD.gifBeating AL and FL is FANTASTIC … but that alone doesn’t determine the season. Milestones YES … but imagine losing 3-4 of the last 5 and losing a bowl game. That’s not success. And it’s also NOT likely to happen … but the measuring stick and the line HAS been moved at this point.

Yeah, whatever happens at Georgia and even if we drop one we shouldn’t I’ve seen enough that now I fully believe we have the right people to get us back into regularly competing with the best of them. I was skeptical when Heupel was hired, but I’m fully sold at this point.

Based on last year's performance, I thought 8-4, 9-3 would be a reasonable season. Now just over halfway and 11-1 is the floor but 12-0 and SEC title game is within reach!

These guys could go undefeated.

11-1 is 100% on the table too but really either one is successful. Even 10-2 is a way better result than most thought preseason.

So hard to say exactly because almost every expectation I’ve had preseason have been shattered.

This season has exceeded expectations. It will be a success unless the wheels come off in the second half. If we finish 10-2 it will have been a successful year - that was really the upper level most saw at the beginning of the season. But we know now that 11-1 is very possible so while 10-2 would be a success, we would all know that we missed an opportunity.

This team plays at a level higher than its individual components. Not saying we don't have some outstanding individuals - we do - but our coaching staff has these guys playing as a team more so than I've seen at Tennesse in a very long time. So, I'll never count these guys out. We already upset one opponent who had superior individual talent, the challenge is to continue this synergistic team-play mode against those who we are equal to or superior talent wise.

"Failure" is a strong word but I will be disappointed with anything less than 11-1 (loss to UGA) to finish out the regular season. A slip up against UK/USC/Vandy/Mizzou would just feel unacceptable--especially with the implications of HAVING to win those games in order to to see a possible playoff birth.

11-1 is about as successful as successful gets for year 2 of a new coaching staff. Whatever happens beyond that in the post season is OK with me.
