Not everyone is going to have perfect form. Jim Furyk learned his swing from his Dad, who was a club pro. As long as it is repeated and works, it doesn't matter.
I agree that being a coach's son doesn't mean that you are a good shooter, but it does mean that you have been told how to fix it and try to get more consistent.
Even more important to have a solid base and technique to get back to when in a rut. Right now, he's all over the place, which is why he is hesitant. If you are missing one way, as a shooter, you are close. If you are right, left, long, short, you are screwed for a bit.
But you know who else's jumper was all over the place as a freshman? That would Mr. Watson. I remember thinking dang this dude would be a nice player if he had a jump shot. Between repetition and seeing enough go through the hoop, by his junior year he became a dangerous shooter.
