Thompson Deserves His Own Thread After This Game

Starting to show savy as a passer. Learning not to telegraph.
One I remember in particular.
Was looking at McRae and flipped from the side to Maymon under the bucket.
Pretty cool for a freshman.

smooth. His height is a great advantage to go along with his instincts to see passing lanes that not every player sees.

I just want to say I am thrilled DT is doing so well. It was fun watching him blossom throughout his hs career to go from basically a Belmont/Lipscomb-type recruit to being our starting PG.

My question is, when is the last time we have had a "TRUE" PG running the show and not a converted 2 guard. Golden, Barton, etc....we seemed to get in a rut trying to take under-sized 2 guards and make them handle the ball. It hasn't worked out so well.

Bobby Maze / Melvin Goines.

He gets confidence in his shot and he will impress even further. I'm glad he hit that one 3, that'll help him. He's a 40% perimeter shooter, he just has had no confidence, it'll get there though.

His ability to get guys the ball in a position to score kept that game from turning into a 3 pt shoot out. And as red hot as Henderson was that wouldn't have boded well. IMO

My concern coming into the year was his foot speed in having to guard his position. However now I think confidence from his O is going translate to better D. Going back to the KY game he does a great job at things even veterans have trouble with like help side defense. So between his effort, frame and basketball IQ this kid is gonna be a good 1.

That shot will improve also. J Rich's form wasn't nearly as developed as DT's is now and he has improved since he arrived. So DT should get better in that regard also.

Nice game DT!

“@Ben_Fred: Jarnell Stokes on PG Darius Thompson: "He controlled the tempo. I really like playing with Darius. When he has the ball, I run harder."

”“@Ben_Fred: Stokes: "Darius is a guy who is not looking to score the ball. He dribbles with his head up. A lot of guys in college don't do that."”

“@Ben_Fred: Stokes: "When you have a guy like that, you have to use it to your best of ability. Run for him, because I know he'll find me."”

This is all Stokes has been asking for. Getting out on fast breaks and burying your man in the paint and receiving the ball.

DT didn't play like that when he did come into games. Good to see it. Not sure what changed but he was as guilty as anybody else getting caught slowly walking it up in other games. Just like all our other guys, he plays better and will make fewer mistakes when attacking and playing ball.
When we get passive attacking a press or halfcourt, his play will suffer. A couple of our guys finally figured out that if someone is guarding you 35 feet out, you can take it to the rim, instead of continuing to run the offense or try to make a lazy pass in our halfcourt sets. Jrich did it a couple of times last night and DT did early. He was supposed to make that crappy pass to the wing that gives us trouble and had a man in his face, so he went by him, drew the D and got an assist, iirc.

DT throws the best bounce pass inside that I have seen in a long time and he gets it to the bigs where they can score easily.

I just wish Barton would get some confidence back in his shot and come out of that slump. We could definitely use both of them shooting well down the stretch.

A positive post by Patrick, is a good sign to say the least.

I do make positive posts on occasion when it is warranted. I call it like I see it.....

But I like Thompson and he should have been getting more minutes much earlier in the season - he is a true point guard.

I have loved this kid from Game 1. He is a PG all day. I judge guys by, would I like to play on a team with him? It is a definite yes for DT.

I can't remember the last time we had two pure pg's but next year we will with him and Austin. I see a lot of Cofer alley oops in the future.

That's a good way to evaluate a player. Not being sarcastic either.

In his 4 games since taking over as the starter, he's averaging 4.5 assists a game, and just 1 turnover.

A 4.5:1 assist:turnover ratio? As a frosh? That's absurd.

Yep...I'm not down on Barton, but things seem to work better, smoother when Thompson is running the show, zero turnovers today.

Yea that's about what he's averaging a game, crazy.

We will see just how much he has grown come Tuesday night...

I hope folks don't judge him based on play against the gators. That's the best on ball D I've seen in a while. He's not prepared for that based on what he sees in practice.

I wish he would be even more assertive. His vision is fantastic. Needs to spread his feet on his shot though. Feet are way to close together, imo. I think that causes problems with the release up top. Shots start with the feet and legs and being square and consistent is tougher with the feet seemingly almost touching each other.

Really looking like the best PG we've had in a long time. Seems to be a good kid too.

I'm not going to go ahead and give him the type of credit that Aaron Craft has earned, but he reminds me, in the way you notice him on the floor, of Craft. You don't really notice Craft on the stat sheet (until you look at Min/TO) yet the team would COMPLETELY fall apart without him. I'm starting to get that feeling when I get a little anxious when Thompson isn't bringing the ball up the court and running the offense. This guy might really be the most critical play ther CCM has brought into this program.

If he could only man up on defense like Craft. He has long arms to get in the passing lanes, but Thompson is a little slow manning up on quick PG's. That and his shot need improvement.
