Thoughts on Josh Dobbs

That kind of says it all for Josh doesn't it. After they drafted a better QB Josh never had a chance. But isnt that just it. He should always have a chance if he's actually good.
If I'm not mistaken #7 was still with them when He was drafted, I can't recall at any point when He was given an opportunity to complete for a starting job. I'm not sure Rudolph was necessarily better than Josh.

Isn't every player given a chance to compete for the starting job? Was Josh signed only to the practice squad?

Pittsburgh Steelers
In fairness to Dobbs, this was about the time that Pittsburgh hired Matt Canada. Not a great offensive mind . Even Big Ben struggled under him...
In saying that I don't see Dobbs as a starting QB in the pros.
One last thing. I do think Dobbs made Butch Jones look good, sort of like Hooker made coach look good

It's been a long time since we've seen a former UT quarterback start in the NFL, so based on that alone it was fun to see Josh Dobbs finally get a shot. However, now that he's been given that shot, it seems like he was a backup for a reason. He's capable of making big plays, especially with his feet, but he also misses too many wide-open throws, including key deep ones, and throws under the sticks on 3rd down entirely too much. Now that his time as a starter is coming to an end in Arizona, I think he's done enough to stay in the league as a backup, but not enough for a starter role unless his team's QB1 is injured. What do you all think?
I think I'd kill to have had him at QB this year.

I’d take him back to replace Milton in a heartbeat lol. Looking at the play in slow motion where Milton fumbled Dobbs would have identified no one was gonna be open and scrambled. Or at least looked left to see there was pressure coming then scrambled.

He is never gonna be one of the league leading QBs but definitely good enough to be one of the bottom starting QBs in the league. Problem is that the bottom 10 are always looking to upgrade. I’m my opinion he has secured his position as a backup for a few years.

Matt Canada was hired by Pittsburgh in 2020 and Dobbs was drafted by the Steelers in 2017 and traded to Jacksonville in 2019. Dobbs second go around with Pittsburgh was during the Canada era but he spent half of that time on IR so he really only played one season when Canada was at the Steelers

He has a terrible surrounding cast. They would be terrible with Murray as QB1 as well. Hard to make accurate throws and put up 300+ yards when you have a crap offensive line that gives you no time and receivers get zero separation.

Dobbs does not have a lot of help in Arisona and I saw that Murray has ramped up his rehabilitation efforts per ESPN.

Drew Petzing went out and traded for Josh Dobbs to be the starter after they missed on him in free agency. The Brown signed him to a $2M guaranteed contract. He has proven himself as an above average QB. He has a long career ahead of him as a well paid backup. He may easily earn an extra $60M in the NFL. Visit Spotrac.com and see what Case Keemun has earned. If put in the middle of talent as Kurt Warner was? Who knows. Go Dobbs! Go Vols!!!

Dobbs is a great back up and borderline starting caliber QB. Much like Tyrod Taylor and Gardner Minshew. But it's doubtful he's gonna be a franchise QB for anyone at this stage in his career.

However, I would have said the same thing about Geno Smith a little over a year ago, yet here we are

I’m not sure another team in a better situation will give him a shot. That’s the problem. We may never know what he could do with a strong supporting cast. Right now it seems like his role is damage control for garbage teams
Yeah, I think had Cleveland kept him, it could have gone much better. JMO

Ok so he’ll never be a HOFer. Gosh some of you assholes must be amazing at your job.

There’s 32 guys in the WORLD as starting QBs. Give the guy the credit & respect he deserves.

Above average backup. Not above average compared to league's starters.

It will be interesting to see if he goes the rocket science route or possibly into coaching.

Success in college, NFL experience, genius level IQ and a great personality....seems like he'd kill it on the recruiting trail

Dude, that’s still playing football at the highest level.

It certainly pays VERY well!

He’s CEO material right now. Far and away the smartest most driven guy I’ve ever met or heard of.

JD is a rocket scientist not a starting QB. He is a great person but never more than a clipboard holder. He will be on to bigger and better things soon...

Above average backup. Not above average compared to league's starters.
He dropped in QBR after Sunday's game. He is now 18th, so that would make him an average starter. He was in the top ten after his first few games. I think he will end up in the top 12 at the end of the season. Keep in mind, his support cast is indeed below average.

I really like Dobbs and will support him always. There's a reason he's been with so many teams over a short NFL career. All those NFL coaches he's played for are not dumb. Dobbs is a backup QB and there's nothing wrong with that.
