Thoughts on Keeton

He is a very good mid-major QB....not as good as we have faced against Cincinnati, NC State, or WKU however.

He will be forgotten on Monday. This game costs him $$ in the draft.

I actually disagree with that

One thing last year showed us is that mobile quarterbacks could eat our lunch. Hopefully the off-season and the injection of talent will help change that, but until game day, that's still a problem for us in my book.

Our problem last year was lack of speed and poor tackling. Butch brought in speed; we will see about the tackling. Last night on Vol Calls Butch said the team was ready to get this game started. I trust Butch will have this team prepared. We just need to make it through the 1st quarter jitters and pull out the win in the second half.

I'm no expert by far, but I was a bit nervous about this guy so watched some of his highlights from last year before the injury. Here are my thoughts.

1) He has an ok arm, nothing great. Long passes tend to float some and has a bit of a wind up, even on the short throws. Decent overall.

2) He has good...yes...you knew it was coming...presence in the pocket. Really feels the pressure and moves around well. We will certainly need to contain him.

3) I would say he has good speed, but not elite. Don't know his 40 time but I would rank Marshall from AU much more dangerous running than Keeton. Was surprised he didn't break more long runs, but he can pick up 5-10 in a hurry if you let him.

4) From what I watched they love to throw the slant on anything 3rd and more than 5 to go. Will be interested to see if that is true in our game. Hopefully we find that out early!

Overall, I'm not as worried about him as I was before watching the film. He can certainly beat you, but if we can contain him and make him throw it a lot, I like our chances of keeping them out of the end zone.

I think that he will have a rusty performance and will have some good plays but most of his performance will just like any normal q.b. has. Hasn't played in quiet a while.

For me the jury is still out. We saw zero improvement in handling the mobile QB last year. In a season that saw us face off against several there were no compensatory scheme changes to try and counteract our lack of speed. Until we prove that we can do so, mobile QB is our Achilles heal on defense.

I want to see Chuckie talking out of his helmet's ear hole asking what day it is after he tries to put his shoulder down for any yards.

Here's a quote from Keeton from SI:

“The thing now is I don’t worry about myself, but whenever I’m watching a football game on TV or in person I’m looking at hits and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty close to their ACL,’” Keeton said. "That’s from experiencing what I did. I realize that you definitely can never predict when it’s going to be your last play so you have to play everything like it is your last.”

Now take that for what you will, but he hasn't been hit once since coming back. It will be in his mind when he plays. To what length it will affect him remains to be seen.

I agree with WilliamDuVOL. It has to be in the back of his mind and will be until he gets hit a couple of times without injury. I imagine then he will settle down and be more like himself. Depending on how mentally tough he is could play a big factor in this game.

The Ag's better hope ole Chucky can scramble around on that repaired wheel, he'll have limited opportunities' to change plays at the line with 102,000 screaming :hi:

He's an ok QB. He is a good one for the conference he plays in. Unfortunately for him he doesn't have alot of other good players on his team to help him out. I don't think he would start for us.

great player

-10 months out on an ACL/MCL
same with his running backs
-New, smaller, inexperienced O Line protecting him
-decent weapons.
-never seen a knee injury be downplayed as much by the national media as this one.
-they are a lateral, rhythm passing team

doesnt run as much as people think. He usually only runs when he has to. More elusive than fast. Anxious to see how he bounces back from a knee injury when the live bullets come flying.

1. Keeton still recovering from ACL injury.
2. USU O-Line even less experienced than ours.
3. Improved Vereen, solid Barnett, and HEALTHY MAGGITT coming off the edge.

I feel bad for the guy. I like our chances here.

I watched his highlights and he looks very good. He is very elusive, but throws the ball really well with accuracy. It's going to be a challenge for us. Hopefully our updated, faster DL will be the difference in the game.

You likely watched him against similar talent. There is a difference.

Seems we have to be reminded of the difference between SEC talent and everyone else every year.

We don't lose these games. The last time was Montana, 3 regimes ago. History says we will roll....just ask Butch about what happened to his 10 win Cinci team.

Keeton's a very good QB-- better than Worley, but Worley has better weapons all around him. If Worley steps up and plays well, I think we'll pull ahead early, with all the momentum behind us. Worley can't have a bad day-- too much at stake.

Let's be clear about a few things: their close losses came against teams that were not playing very well. Auburn in 2011 went 7-5 with no Gus Malzahn; fired Chizik that year. USC last year was dreadful on defense and only allowed 280 yards total offense to USU; fired Kiiffin after getting gashed by ASU the next week. Wisconsin had a very poor matchup athletically they are built for slow, grind it out football. Let's not get too carried away with their close losses. By the way, these occurred with a healthy, non injured Keeton and more talented team overall.

That's a good point. Hopefully we make him look rather pedestrian. I like our chances of holding them to 17-24 points. If we don't, I think we are in for another tough defensive year.

Agreed. I believe all the talking heads have jumped on the "cinderella school with the comeback kid QB" bandwagon. They seem to be ignoring the offensive weapons USU lost, while at the same time ignoring the VOLS not insignificant improvements in defense. We're a team who last year played a devilishly tough schedule where almost all teams were better than the Utes. I think we win going away.

Vol's need to get after Keaton early and often, Aggies can't win with Keaton on the bench, Get it done Vols!
