Three years and counting

I had Ohio State at +12, but I put my play in a couple of days early. Don't remember what it was at kickoff. Everyone underestimated that Buckeye squad because they weren't flashy. They were a lot like our '98 team. Everyone acts like those teams were scrappy overachievers. NFL rosters show that's not the case.

Yep, I remember thinking that through their 2002 season as well.

Still, when the importance of the game is taken into account, the worst call I've ever seen.

I would like to say again that it was a questionable call, made bigger by it being in the NC game.

I know the article says it was PI, but I remember differently. Either way, I also remember another OSU WR being held on the play that I thought could have caused the call. Even then, very questionable.

Miami got their calls, too.

Where was Kellen Winslow Jr. during all this? He needed to represent for all the soldiers out there.

I love how people continue to ridicule a guy for having genuine passion for the program he played for. We could use a little of that over on The Hill.

It just happened that his passion was presented in a fashion that was hilarious. That presentation was recorded and replayed on ESPN about 25,000 times. It's good to get fired up, but you can tone it down after the game when you are talking to the media. Or at least try to talk in a way that won't embarrass your university- not that UT is devoid of players that get their embarrassing behavior into the press.

When did the military academies start playing football in Miami?
Oh, I forgot. Kellen is the only person ever to use military images when discussing football. I just dreamed all those references to "bombs," "blitzes," and "field generals."

Take off those Cane glasses hat, that guy was a wacko. That's the last thing we need.

Kellen Winslow, Jr.
- After a college game against Tennessee said, "this is war. I don't give a flying you know what about a Vol. They don't give a freaking you know what about you. They will kill you. So I'm going to kill them. All you take this down. We don't care about nobody but this U. We don't. If I didn't hurt him, he'd hurt me. They're gunning for my legs, I'll come right back at them. I'm a f****** soldier."
- After sitting out most of rookie season with a torn ACL, was injured for his entire second season following a motorcycle crash caused by an attempt to perform difficult tricks.

I have to admit it was funny. The funny thing about it was, the people he should have been screaming at were his teammates. Specifically, Brock Berlin.

It was hilarious... Kellen lashing out at the media, calling himself a "soldjah" and referring to the football field as a war zone. The defenders were "coming to get him." Quality comedy from ol Kellen Jr.

I was still living in Knoxville in '03. A group of us had traveled to Miami for the game. Everyone was getting great laughs about Winslow losing his mind, myself included. However, the mentality he expressed is exactly why they have won 5 National Championships. Miami sees the football world very simply: "You're with us or you're not. If you're not, it's our job to annihilate and humiliate you." I have no problem with that attitude.

They've won 5 NC's because they are right in the middle of a talent hotbed down there....among other things.

I don't see the correlation between "desire to win" and "lost your mind".

Puhleeze . . . There was no mentality there. He looked like he was prepped for the interview by the PR firm of Leaf, Rocker and Bonds.

You can elevate it all you want, but go look at it over in the Youtube thread. It was just a stupid kid losing his temper.

Everybody has the "desire to win." Miami has generally had another competitive gear during their run of success. There's a fine line between intensity and insanity. They've walked it better than anyone else in the last quarter century.

I didn't say he articulated it well. However, the underlying attitude is exactly why Miami has been the program of the last 25 years. They see the world as them and us. For God's sake, they don't even go to voluntary mini-camps when they're in the pros. They choose to work out with each other. The "Us v. The World" mentality has served them very well.

I agree with freak, not so sure how special that program is if it is not in the middle of talent galore.

Then I guess Florida Atlantic and Florida International will be playing in BCS bowls soon? They're right here in South Florida with the 'Canes. The state of Ohio has great talent. I can't wait to see Ohio U and Cincinnati play in the Fiesta Bowl.

It was a different era back in the 90's in college football when they were really dominant, now everyone has caught on and schools from all over the country raid Florida. Thus, Miami is not the program they were back then. Ohio has great talent but not as good as Florida.

I didn't realize that 2000-2002 was the ancient past. Miami has fallen off because they have a head coach that is beneath the stature of the program.

Yeah, that's the same thing.

We know it's not the only reason but it's a big one, just as it has been for FSU and UF.

I don't think it's any coincidence that within about a 10 year period Miami, FSU and Florida all started competing for National titles.

There are four main reason for that. Their names are Schnellenberger, Johnson, Bowden, and Spurrier.
