Three years and counting

There are four main reason for that. Their names are Schnellenberger, Johnson, Bowden, and Spurrier.

No doubt that all 3 schools hit the coaching lottery, but I think the talent in Florida really exploded at about the same time.

I'm not sure it exploded as much as it just started staying at home. Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, and Nebraska all used to pull speed out of the Sunshine State. The aforementioned coaching giants sealed the borders.

Easier to seal them then it is to try and break into them when they are sealed.

 does that even make sense?

The funny thing is I think as a pure college football coach, Dennis Erickson is as good as any of those guys. He simply let personal baggage drag him down. He won at Washington State and Oregon State. How many coaches could do that?

Yep, I remember thinking that through their 2002 season as well.

i no this was dead, but i wanted to say one thing. yes there defense was good-in a way. they were the only team to win the national championship since the bcs started NOT in the top 10 in total defense. they were like 70th in total offense too. they were 20th in total defense. the defense held the other team when it counted. the other team would take the ball all the way down looking like they would score, but then stuffed inside then 10, becasue the defense turned on.

they were similar to our team in some ways, but i don't think they were quite as good.they won 7 games by 7 points ore less. they pulled through when it counted with little time on the clock. they needed a goal line stand to beat cincinatti, a miracle pass to beat purdue, a defensive touchdown to beat penn state, many picks in the endzone in differnent games, with timely interceptions by chris gamble. 2 bogus pass interference calls against michigan, 2 bogus out of bounds calls on ilini touchdowns against illinois, and that bogus pass interference call in the fiesta bowl.

it's true they had some great games, and they had a lot of good players on that defense, but that season was CHARMED. that type of national championship season will not happen again for a while. next year they had almost the same team, but like usual, when they had as many close games as they did the season before, they were bound to lose a few.
