Tim Banks is either lying or delusional.

Don’t know the man. Have nothing against him.
Have been watching the Vols for over 50 years and for him To say this years defense was “really good” is just not true.
I don't know the coach personally either but I do understand his job before playing Clemson or any other opponent is not to outline our defensive weaknesses in an interview.

He's much smarter than your answer of detailing the problems we have. Think about it.

For him to say that he coached a “really good defense is just ludicrous. It is beyond “coachspeak”.
Why not say that we really struggled and had some key injuries and youth or something. But don’t pee on my shoes and tell me it’s raining.

Tim Banks calls South Carolina game ‘anomaly’ for Tennessee’s ‘really good defense’
We would rank #18 nationally in ppg allowed, if you exclude the USCe game. . . #18 nationally seems like a pretty decent defense.

Nobody seems to mention that Banks has been here two years now and there has been very little, if any, improvement from last year. Not good, if youre looking to stay employed. "If youre not improving..."

Sorry, it does. When we score more, it causes the opponent to throw more. It’s not difficult. Volume stats with our offense is not a good measure. The numbers are there to see.
UGA is constantly ahead too, causing people to throw to try to catch up, yet somehow they only allow 292 yards a game. Our defense wasn't good this year, the rest is turd polishing.

Their defense is freaking loaded across the board
They are good on defense, we are not. Now our offense takes a back seat to no one, but like the OP, I would have preferred Banks acknowledge the shortcomings on defense. I'd feel more confident that he could fix them. Instead he just tries to gaslight us.

Here’s how I would put it. “We’ve played really well a few games and we’ve had a couple that we didn’t play our best but we’ve had a good week of preparation and I’m confident we will play well on Saturday.” That way you don’t just throw your guys under the bus but you don’t say total horse crap like he did

He should say things like:
We at times struggled with QB containment, setting the edge, wrapping up, causing turnovers, etc. he doesn’t have to single anyone out.
He needs to take responsibility with us needing to get better, that’s all.
They didn’t struggle causing turnovers at all. They caused a turnover in every game but 1 and caused multiple turnovers in 7 games.

They are good and playing some of the most talented players in the country. We aren't and it's really not fair to compare with them

UGA plays ball control with their run game while we play fast until the 4th quarter.

Also, UGA was down to Mizzou in the second half, was just up 14-0 to Auburn at half, just up 17-12 to MSU at half, only beat UK 16-6, and just up 10-7 to GTech at half. Wow…they really jumped out ahead on a bunch of teams! Their talent ended up winning out. No one dives deep into the numbers to care about this stuff.

Just pointing out that the reasoning is flawed, clearly there is no correlation between being ahead alot and giving up alot of yards. They also had 5 #1 draft picks off their defense last year, mostly they have first year starters they are doing this with. I'm proud of what we've done as a team this year, win or lose Friday. However, we have to get significantly better on defense or their will be no championships.

How much improvement should a fan reasonably expect of a new defensive staff year two over year one? What standard are you using to measure that?

How did they do against South Carolina, Florida, LSU, Oregon in the first half? Also, UGA threw it 36 more times than we did this year.

Volume stats are volume stats. It’s about time of possession. UGA doesn’t score quickly. This isn’t rocket science. But I agree, we need to improve in the secondary.

Agreed. I looked at the TOP for the opposing offenses. 7 teams had the ball for over 35 minutes. Only 1 game (LSU) they were on the field less than 30 minutes. It’s not as simple as just developing more depth since the Offense scores so quick. Especially since half our 1s probably wouldn’t be a 1 on at least a couple defenses. A lot of the defenses short coming is coaching, but a lot is the talent level on D combined with a tired D.

UGA has been stacking five and four star defensive talent in their recruiting classes for 7 or 8 years now. This was year two of Banks.

Opponents have to throw a ton and score a lot to keep up with us. It’s not like they can score 17 and milk the clock like they are playing ky.
