How did they do against South Carolina, Florida, LSU, Oregon in the first half? Also, UGA threw it 36 more times than we did this year.

Just throwing it more means nothing. We played quicker- time of possession.

Hooker had a 9.5 yard per attempt; Milton had a 13 yard per attempt. Stetson Bennett had 8.7 yard per attempt. We threw quicker and had more down field completions.

This affects your defense and the opponent throwing more. But we are in year 2 under Heupel anyway, and I wasn’t expecting a Kirby Smart defense.

Opponents have to throw a ton and score a lot to keep up with us. It’s not like they can score 17 and milk the clock like they are playing ky.
And we let them keep up with us by not stopping them. We can stop them. Dammit I want a defensive coordinator who is not satisfied with 85th in the nation in total defense, or 45th in scoring defense either. We need to get alot better on that side of the ball to win championships. Banks seems to think he did fine. We need to demand more to get back to that Orange Defense that brings home trophies.

Their defense also stopped the other team and got their ball back for their offense. That's what I want for us, not to excuse shiddy defense and pretend there is nothing wrong with it. Also not much difference in yards per attempt there, Hooker's 9.5 was 1st out of 131 quarterbacks, Bennett's was 12th of 131, so both team's quarterbacks were in the top 10% in that category.

They are good on defense, we are not. Now our offense takes a back seat to no one, but like the OP, I would have preferred Banks acknowledge the shortcomings on defense. I'd feel more confident that he could fix them. Instead he just tries to gaslight us.

Time of possession….as I said, too. We are the quickest team in the country. UGA does not move quickly.

I’m not disagreeing that we can be better in the secondary. But if we consider USCe an anomaly, we were actually above average and top 25-40 in multiple categories. It’s not as bad as people think.

UGA also played MSU, Auburn, and GTech while we played Bama, LSU, and Pittsburgh. 🤷‍♂️

i think the discussion was whether low time of possession causes fatigue on the defense.
No, I was responding to the idea that we gave up alot of yards because teams had to pass to catch up with us. Clearly, that is irrelevant. If you have teams in a situation where they have to be one dimensional, generally that is good for a defense. I haven't been bashing Banks all year, but if he thinks we played "really good defense" this year, he may be a bigger part of the problem than I realized.

They weren't that bad statistically. They gave up some yards but play a lot of snaps

It is part of the entire game plan. Sure, I'd like to have a lockdown D that gives up and 11 point average per game. But, when your offense regularly scores in 4 plays on a 75 yard drive eating a whopping :52 off the clock, this is not realistic. Heupel's Xs & Os are just built that way. Even if we stack the D for 3 more years with talent like we did in this cycle, I still don't think we'll see a "lockdown D" in the traditional sense.

Tennessee's scheme demands that defensive measurements be adjusted to fit with this team. Does it even make sense that a top 10 team at the end of a season has a defense "RANKED" in the 120s? No, that is not supposed to be possible. But, that's because measuring our Ds "quality" is based on a different metric. It's kind of like the "Time Of Possession" metric to measure an offenses success. We absolutely suck at that metric, but that doesn't affect the final results 10 out of 12 times this season!

Can our D improve. Absolutely! And we landed the kind of defensive horses to get it done this cycle. Only the Alabubba and USC games got outta control this season. All the rest were good enough performances for our scheme to win. Even with a lot of average players on that field and a lot of backend injuries to boot.

He walked into this one himself. Y'all keep excusing bad defense though, and we'll keep wasting national championship caliber offenses.

You prefer the Butchisms? Always too young or too injured. I hate that.
No. I prefer him to call a spade a spade and say they haven't played as well as they're capable of at times and they're hungry to prove themselves against a good team.

Didn't Georgia Tech beat Pittsburgh? Also, if you remove our worst defensive performance you'd need to remove everyone else's worst performance as well before you re-ranked teams, otherwise you aren't comparing apples to apples. Anyway, this has gone on longer than it should, we agree that there needs to be improvement, I am just concerned Banks thinks this was "really good defense", it wasn't. I would hate to see the Heupel era consist of multiple national championship caliber offenses wasted by porous defenses.

With our TOP, you are going to see defenses that aren’t elite based on numbers. Our defense improved from last year.

But volume stats are garbage with our offense. People need to understand that.

The defense greatly improved against the run, and especially the QB draws that murdered us in 2021. The secondary was bad and the defense overall was dragged way down by it. The D needs to get ALOT better for Banks to be coaching here in 2024 and honestly, I wouldn't be sad if Willie Martinez were gone after the bowl game.

I'm just curious how anyone here is "excusing bad defense?"

Is there a vote we have I'm not aware of?

I don't think my praising the offense or defense contributes to whether or not we're "wasting national championship caliber offenses"

It's a false choice, you can have a fast scoring, prolific offense AND an elite defense. Case in point, Clemson's last national championship team in 2018, 96th in time of possession, 4th in scoring offense, 3rd in total offense and 1st in scoring defense and 5th in total defense.

VolGee certainly is excusing bad defense. He's presenting a false choice, as if giving up tons of yards is just part and parcel to having a prolific, fast scoring offense. It's not. See my post above re 2018 Clemson.

You definitely can be elite on both sides of the ball. Fast scoring on O and elite on D. The difference in your example and UT though is that was Dabo’s 9th year at Clemson. Not 2nd.

If we only had the talent that Clemson had recruited…

You act like Heupel and Banks have been here for 10 years and recruited a bunch of elite talent in defense.

I was willing to give Banks and this defense the benefit of the doubt until the South Carolina game. There is no excuse for any top 5, top 10, top 50 team to ever get outclassed by and lay down to an inferior team the way this team did that night. That is the kind of performance that got Kevin Steele fired the next day.
