Tim Banks is either lying or delusional.

VolGee certainly is excusing bad defense. He's presenting a false choice, as if giving up tons of yards is just part and parcel to having a prolific, fast scoring offense. It's not. See my post above re 2018 Clemson.

I’m not totally excusing it, but I understand that we are in year two. But Heupel’s offense is even faster than Dabo’s.

To just say that our defense sucked is lazy. It wasn’t good in a few games, but it improved from 2021. Just don’t use total defense as a statistic.

20th in rushing defense
25th red zone defense
45th in scoring defense
86th in pass efficiency defense
49th 4th down conversion defense
86th Yards per game (but this is a volume stat which will always be high with our quick offense)
14th in turnover margin

Just need to improve the secondary
I’d be interested to see where our ranking would be based on time of possession. Since our offense scored so quickly we gave the opposing teams a lot more time to create offense.

It is part of the entire game plan. Sure, I'd like to have a lockdown D that gives up and 11 point average per game. But, when your offense regularly scores in 4 plays on a 75 yard drive eating a whopping :52 off the clock, this is not realistic. Heupel's Xs & Os are just built that way. Even if we stack the D for 3 more years with talent like we did in this cycle, I still don't think we'll see a "lockdown D" in the traditional sense.

Tennessee's scheme demands that defensive measurements be adjusted to fit with this team. Does it even make sense that a top 10 team at the end of a season has a defense "RANKED" in the 120s? No, that is not supposed to be possible. But, that's because measuring our Ds "quality" is based on a different metric. It's kind of like the "Time Of Possession" metric to measure an offenses success. We absolutely suck at that metric, but that doesn't affect the final results 10 out of 12 times this season!

Can our D improve. Absolutely! And we landed the kind of defensive horses to get it done this cycle. Only the Alabubba and USC games got outta control this season. All the rest were good enough performances for our scheme to win. Even with a lot of average players on that field and a lot of backend injuries to boot.
I think you nailed that. CJH told us in his introductory press conference that we would never win the time of possession.

2022, UT ranks 131 out of 131 in TOP.

Agreed that giving up yards isn't at all part of Heupel's ideal defense. Heupel preaches "look for turnovers" and "get stops" with the idea of getting the high powered offense the ball.

I don't think Heupel is going to build a defensive powerhouse as a coach. Smart builds shutdown defenses and passable offenses. Heupel is the opposite, in my mind, building exciting offenses and passable defenses.

I might be accused of making excuses for that opinion but very, very few coaches build both great defenses and offenses.

Except we didn't really struggle with those you listed

Wrong. We caused some turnovers, but we struggled with the rest. Badly at times. Our tackling could be horrendous. Our run d was solid. Scrambling qbs carved the d up.

For him to say that he coached a “really good defense is just ludicrous. It is beyond “coachspeak”.
Why not say that we really struggled and had some key injuries and youth or something. But don’t pee on my shoes and tell me it’s raining.

Tim Banks calls South Carolina game ‘anomaly’ for Tennessee’s ‘really good defense’

Exactly what I want my coach to do a few days before a game - bury his unit, just trash them in the name of 'honesty'.

I will never get how many fans seriously expect coaches to drop their drawers and bare their souls publicly for the fans and media.

I'm not super impressed with what Banks has done. I realize the talent he's been working with so it's hard to judge, but he has done some things I scratch my head over. I really liked it when the d was more aggressive and blitzed more. They may have completed the pass, but their qb was picking grass out of their teeth. Seemed like he got more conservative, but injuries etc played a part.

I've seen enough of Martinez to have an opinion about. He's had 2 tours here, both of which the secondary struggled. Just not a good coach, but that's my opinion.

Not even close to what I said.
Just don’t say they have had a “really good season” because they haven’t.

i dunno, if you show me a defense that is so void of quality depth due to players who left, not to mention at least 3 players who would have been starters this year on defense which would have led to the starters we have being quality depth, and a style of offensive play which does not lend a hand to help this lack of depth, i think the defense played quite a bit better than i thought it would have before the season started. but i am guessing the big complainers are the same people who forgot where this team was two years ago. banks may not be the next buddy ryan, but he has done a decent job with what he has had to work with

I look at what Zach Arnett did at Miss State in 2021. Their talent was ranked well below ours and they fielded a top 25 total defense with an offense that also left them hanging at times.

How many teams ranked above us would be if they played our schedule? Were ranked 5th in the SEC in Total defence...2nd in rushing defence. To call a Coach a lia
Didn't Georgia Tech beat Pittsburgh? Also, if you remove our worst defensive performance you'd need to remove everyone else's worst performance as well before you re-ranked teams, otherwise you aren't comparing apples to apples. Anyway, this has gone on longer than it should, we agree that there needs to be improvement, I am just concerned Banks thinks this was "really good defense", it wasn't. I would hate to see the Heupel era consist of multiple national championship caliber offenses wasted by porous defenses.
How many teams would be ranked above us if they played our schedule? Were ranked 5th in the SEC in Total defence. Ranked 2nd in the SEC in rushing defence. Next to last in passing defence. It don't take a genius to figure we need vast improvement in that department. 2nd in the SEC in RedZone defence. 7th in the SEC in sacks.
Our defence ain't as bad as you try to make it. Improve the secondary and we are well on our way. Ranking teams nationally is pure BS since we play in the best conference in the country.

Thank you.
yes our D plays more when our O scores quickly.
So? Develop more defensive depth.
Don't you have to have players to develop depth? This is year two with this staff. Please go back to year one and look at the defensive roster that this defensive staff inherited. It was a very empty cupboard. This is the first class that actually has some of the players needed to develop into that roster you envision. Look at the reality of the state of this team before you lay out the criticism.

And then will criticize them for calling out a player. Look at how much heat CRB took for calling out Uros.

If you expected Banks to disparage and insult his defense 3 days before playing in the Orange Bowl, well, then you are a bit nuts. Sorry. There will be time for reflection in the off-season. You aren’t going to get that right before a big game. You want your guys confident.

Anyone who tries to pretend total yards or points per game are valid indicators of defensive performance, is intentionally misleading you.

That’s a discussion to be had about how good/bad our defense was last season. But to have it, you first need to use valid metrics
