It is part of the entire game plan. Sure, I'd like to have a lockdown D that gives up and 11 point average per game. But, when your offense regularly scores in 4 plays on a 75 yard drive eating a whopping :52 off the clock, this is not realistic. Heupel's Xs & Os are just built that way. Even if we stack the D for 3 more years with talent like we did in this cycle, I still don't think we'll see a "lockdown D" in the traditional sense.
Tennessee's scheme demands that defensive measurements be adjusted to fit with this team. Does it even make sense that a top 10 team at the end of a season has a defense "RANKED" in the 120s? No, that is not supposed to be possible. But, that's because measuring our Ds "quality" is based on a different metric. It's kind of like the "Time Of Possession" metric to measure an offenses success. We absolutely suck at that metric, but that doesn't affect the final results 10 out of 12 times this season!
Can our D improve. Absolutely! And we landed the kind of defensive horses to get it done this cycle. Only the Alabubba and USC games got outta control this season. All the rest were good enough performances for our scheme to win. Even with a lot of average players on that field and a lot of backend injuries to boot.
