He was mentioned on the Erik Ainge show and was the running backs coach until the coaching change. Before that he was with Ohio State and coached Eddie George. He has a tie to our offensive coordinator coach Jake from their time at the Bears together and he would fit the Minority bill. I think this would be our guy if Butch wants to go the NFL route and he has still not landed a job yet so this could be a good opportunity to land him.

So there is no confusion in the OP.... He was the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears from 2004 until the coaching change when he was not retained by Marc Trestman.

it is not simply trying to fit some "minority" bill, and it is not a diversity play for diversity sake.

people can claim (and rightfully so) that this is the 21st century, and color shouldn't matter. because it is the 21st century, and color absolutely should Not matter.

however, that simply is not reality, even in the 21st century.

it is easy to say - i dont care. blue, green, black, white... i want the "best", "most qualified", "dedicated", etc etc... A honestly, thats the way it should be

but fact is, even in the 21st century, if you want to recruit young black men from the South to skill positions at your university, then you are going to need black men in coaching positions that can go in to the neighborhoods and living rooms where those young black men and their families reside.

its just a fact of life, still, even in the 21st century..

He would be a good hire. My gut tells me trooper will get the spot because we need someone quickly and if the NCAA catches up with him then we can let him go and have time to hire someone else next year.

Trooper can instantly land us several top recruits. (Berrys, TK jr a few others.).

Spencer would probably be a better long term hire, but can't see him as a top recruiter.

Maybe I am off here but don't quite understand this guy being an option. Exactly why would he leave an NFL job where he has been for 10 years to take a step down to coaching the same position in college? 10 years in the NFL, he has to make ALOT more than we would offer him. What am I missing here?

Trooper isn't going to 'instantly' land anyone. He will not get a sniff of this job...wake up America. Somebody that nobody on here has heard of or even mentioned will get the job...now go get back to your job!!!:crazy:

He was not retained by the Bears....in other words, he is currently unemployed, or at least not coaching. Im sure he would listen if we offered....

Ahh, my bad. I missed that part I guess. That changes it all then if he is looking for work.

Actually besides TT this is probably our best fit. I wouldn't mind either. Hell maybe if we get TT we could get Dyer to come for a year on a short leash.

Tim Spencer is obviously a fine coach. You don't have a career like him and not be one. My one issue relates to recruiting. He has been out of the college game for quite awhile and probably was not all that locked in to recruiting in the south while at Ohio State. Not saying he could not get it done. Just see it as a really big maybe.

You are joking, right? What is with you people wanting this trouble-making, player paying coach who is about to get hammered by the NCAA?

The RB coach Jones selects will probably be someone we have no clue about - like most of the rest of his staff.

Can. He. Recruit? This is all I give a crap about. Does he have ties to key recruits that we desperately need? If so. Yes. If not. No. Coaching rbs is pretty damn easy. Helping haul in a top recruiting class is not and that's what we need.

I like the Eddie George connection since Hurd has a very close running style and body type.

I'm actually pro Tim Spencer and honestly think thats who we get. I highly doubt TT will be the coach no way he gets out of NCAA violations. I do feel CBJ should do his due process and see what the sanctions and or penalties that could come with him. If not that bad then yes I am for him. If unable to obtain or going to be server penalties then drop back and punt. and go after Tim Spencer dude this guy recruited hard for OSU back in the day.

Oh yeah btw the Dyer was a joke.

Coachingsearch.com says per VQ, CBJ is to interview Spencer and NC State RB coach Des Kitchings.

For those who don't remember Tim was a heck of a college RB in his own right. He would be a good fit with this staff. I loved JG but Spencer has more of a pedigree as a RB coach.

I think with the experience in the NFL, more recruits would be willing to listen to him. I could be completely wrong, but he's a coach that could put a running back in the NFL if they listen to him

This is a great point! The man coached a Heisman winner and coached Clarett to an outstanding FR season and a NC. In an ironic way, he could help steer Hurd away from OSU despite being an alum. Not that he'd negatively recruit against OSU but it may help sway Hurd if he sees an OSU alum relentlessly recruiting for UT. I really like Spencer's resume and the possibility he presents in keeping Hurd home.
