Time to move on from Tim Banks

Jury is still out on Banks. Lack of depth hurt us last two seasons, I have seen improvement near end of last season and this season.

Having said that, first half was on coaches and team both, but mostly coaches. Second half was better, but need to do better having a good gameplan to begin with.

Let's see how the next three weeks go.

Now guys we been trying a new approach on defense this year. I call it the T Banks Kinder and Gentler approach.
Step 1 - there is no need to be over agressive when applying a tackle, you should just give the ball carrier a gentle signal that you intend for him to go
down for example a shoulder bump. If he dont go down we chalk that up to poor sportsmanship on his part.
Step 2 - no need to look back for the ball on passing plays. Just stay with your man and once he catches the ball "see step 1" and this is one of those
times it is ok to celebrate that he caught the ball and show him you appreciate him not going all the way to the endzone.
Step 3 - QBs have enough pressure in their life with school, girlfriends and such to be having any necessary pressure on the field. Show them the love
respect that you show your own momma. If you get close to him, give him room to scramble and you just follow along and let him throw it.
If he is a good sportsman he will realize what you done and not try to complete it.
Step 4 - Remember to be kind and gentle in all walks of your life and you will be rewarded greatly.

“let’s see how the next three weeks go”. I hear what you are saying; but after three more weeks, the 2023 season will be half over. We don’t have time to wait. Banks has to get it fixed now.

Not impressed at all so far. That said I don’t care what he says, I care what he does to fix the problem. Most coaches have the sense to not throw players under the bus.

I don't disagree with his comments for the most part. I think the DB's played poorly but take away a few missed tackles and a couple of breakdowns by the LB's and the score is much different in the first half. You really can't blame the LB's with Pili being out and Herring and Carter having to play a much larger role.

If his comments to the media are any indication, I think Banks has done a poor job setting goals and expectations for the defense. His answers in press conferences are often very hand-wavey and non-committal. Even in 2021 the contrast between him and Golesh as coordinators struck me.

Has to get it fixed now...absolutely! I'm just saying I want to see if he can and the next 3-4 games are all pretty critical.

UTSA because if we struggle to stop them, it doesn't get any easier after that. USC jr, Tamu and bammer speak for themselves.

His entire strategy of hiring assistants is starting to become suspect.
If I remember correctly, hiring a defensive coordinator took quite a while. I don’t think Banks was the first choice either. Willie Martinez some way somehow has kept bouncing around this league for a long time.

I've noticed Tim Banks seems to have been on a very short leash with VN posters since day one. Is there a backstory with Banks and UT Vols, or something? I completely understand wanting better performance but I feel like he's been on the outs even before the first snap last year.

What gives?

Yeah.......some folks can't help but let their personal bias seep out. It's never made sense that if defense has a bad game, it's all Coach Banks fault, but if the offense has a bad game (and despite being #1 last year, offense had some off days and off starts), but that was never on the coaches on offense. It was always the players. Now we see it rearing it's ugly head again. Milton is taking the heat for the offense not playing well. He's not good enough, will never be good enough to be an SEC QB. But the coaches on offense are geniuses and the best in the business, the kids just suck.
Again, I continue to say, I understand why other schools say we are crazy, delusional fans at UT. We attack our very own football team with hate when that should at least be directed at opposing teams.

Banks wasn't the first choice. There were about 3 or 4 other offers that went out. UT had one of the highest salary packages for the new DC and we kept getting turned down. Anybody know why? Because no elite dc wanted to risk his good name and reputation to come to this dumpster fire. COWARDS!

Some quotes from Tim Banks at the Knoxville Quarterback Club:

“The stats don’t always tell the story… Being able to make the plays that we needed to make to give us a chance to be successful, that’s what we’re always looking for.”

“The only thing I’m concerned about is, ‘Did we win or did we lose?’… Winning plays give us a chance to be successful.”

“When we break down the tape, there are some things we would liked to have done betters… But to sit here and say it was the D-line or say it was the DBs, it’s always a combination. I think we’ve played some good defense for most of the season.”

Despite mistakes, Tim Banks proud of Vols' late-game grit in Florida win

Should have said Hadden wouldn't see the field again and I would be sold on his coaching job.

The kid is a head case.

I think the NCAA had a lot to do w/ it. All we need now is a guy to get us off the field on the 3rd about half the time and he would be a hero. I’ve been kind of withholding judgment on Banks given that it was understood that we were not going to be good at first. That said, Saturday was a disgrace. Florida didn’t throw the ball over 20 yards the entire game. Why we allowed all that underneath stuff or wouldn’t bring up MCollough in run support earlier was baffling .

If Banks thinks Martinez is doing a great job with the DB's that brings up questions about Banks. I know Hype has the final call on changing coaches but we had 3 Sr DB's playing Sat and all 3 missed tackles, took bad angles, got beat repeatedly on short passes. If your a Sr. then you have been under Martinez for 3 yrs. The answer is obvious.

I've been very critical of the offense from coaching down, actually said Joe wasn't getting much help against UF. Banks is not a good DC or Safety coach. Schematically doesn't make sense and players constantly out of position or not reacting to the ball or reading the play. And the only safety that didn't grade out terrible for that game was McCollough.

He was never a full time DC before getting the job here. I mean I know I wanted a guy with at least a few years of DC experience. Hopefully can improve it he defense dramatically and quickly. But so don’t have much faith in that.

Did you really just say that Banks wasn't a full time DC? The only time Banks was a true co-coordinator was at Penn State where Pry called the plays. Everywhere else, he was the play caller. Check his bio, he was a Broyle Nominee at Cincinnati where he had co-coordinator title but called the plays. Also, he's won conference championships in MAC 2 times, Big Ten as co-coordinator, and Big East. This is the first time in a conference that he hasn't won conference championship, so how can you he's never been a full time DC. Come on man.....do some research before you just spit out your facts.

This response is absolute nonsense. Fla went Vanilla in the 2nd half because they had a hurt QB. If they had needed to score more they would have.
I always like the "they didn't want to score" argument. Their offense was pretty vanilla the whole game, as evidenced by their longest pass completion being 18 yards. Again, one busted play, two too many 3rd conversions, and (I had forgotten) one big roughing the passer penalty.

On the 3rd down conversion business: 7-14 is not great, but 5-14 is very good. Two plays separate a poor performance on 3rd down from a really good performance on 3rd down. Georgia gave up 5-13 against South Carolina. Two plays and ours looks like theirs. That's how close we are on defense. With the way we attack, keep bringing in the players and two years from now this conversation doesn't happen.
