I don't have sack totals by situation, and penalties aren't included either, but here are the 3rd down passing totals by situation:
3rd and 10+ there have been 17 pass attempts and 2 first downs allowed.
3rd and 7-9, 14 attempts, 3 first downs.
Runs in those same situations:
3rd and 10+, 10 attempts, 1 first down.
3rd and 7-9, 6 attempts, 1 first down.

So, no, 3rd and long has not been a problem.

I'm going to suggest that it's just because we're fans and remember the two or three long ones. More numbers:

On all passing plays over 10 yards, we're third, ahead of Georgia and Alabama. On 20+ plays, we're third , one (8 to 9) behind Georgia, and a few ahead of Alabama. On 30+ passing plays, we're tied for 3rd, behind Georgia, but ahead of Alabama (5 to 8).

Against the run, we're tied for 6th on 10+ runs, one behind Georgia (20 to 19). On 20+ runs we've given up we've given up 4, behind Alabama at 3 and Georgia at 2. We've given up 3 30+ runs, which is tied for 9th and one behind Alabama. However, all 3 of the 30+ runs were also 40+ runs, where we are dead last.

All of this is to repeat what I've said... we're close. Two more playmakers and we have a dominant defense.

Just my opinion, and may be I am wrong. But the defense seems like an issue because teams generally know they to go all 4 downs against us if they are in the middle of the field. So we probably have more 4th down conversions against us than the average team. But as someone pointed out above, we are actually pretty fantastic on 3rd downs. If teams weren't so scared of keeping up with our offense, we'd see more punting on 4th down in the middle of the field.

I will take our defense over any we have had in the last 10 years and it will get better and better as the talent increases and gains experience. It will be good enough to win the SEC in the near future.

Folks often times kneejerk way to fast, we have so many that lash out at the first bad game. The fact was the Florida game our players simply didn’t fill their gaps at the line. We didn’t tackle well in open space. We have improved. GBO!

If you want me to be real the defense DID lose us that game. Hadden completely whiffing on an easy tackle comes to mind.

This coming after last year when we were horrendous on defense. I wasn't the only one calling for his head.

The improvement Banks and the defense have made recently is nothing short of a miracle and I'm here for it. Now let's get that passing game in order.

I was super angry after that game too. We should have beat them by 21 at the very least. Instead the defense stunk up the field, offense left points on the field along with pre-snap penalties, and the zebras didn't do us any favors.
