Time to move on from Tim Banks

My last post on Coach Banks for now: I always, always, always prefer an attacking defense. I never want the defense to go down playing scared or even cautious. Some folks on here want Justin Wilcox back. I don't. It was excruciating watching his defense (THAT was truly "bend but don't break"). The last time we had a real attacking defense was Ken Donahue for a few years in the 80's. Many of us older folks remember swarming all over Testaverde. Banks is the first DC we've had since with that philosophy and that attitude. The first one who, with that team, may have been able to pull that off. You still have to have the players; but when it works it looks like Venables, and at times last year it did. He still needs two or three more playmakers, (and he needed Pili for the Florida game because he was brought in to be the defensive QB). Attacking, but with only one "explosive play" (two, if you count the 18 yard touchdown pass, which likely would have gained more) means we're very very close.
Please forgive me for quoting my own post. I just want to add: that's an example of what it can look like. With a couple more playmakers, it can look like that consistently.

Some folks just want what they think to be right no matter how silly their statements are.. Yeah our defense gave up 26 points fire the DC the sky is falling lol. Seriously they will use every score every missed tackle no matter the context to prove their pointless point. Our defense leads the SEC in sacks.... and are second in the nation at 22. For all you math wizards that more than 5 a game. So even if we went to averaging 2 a game the rest of the season that puts us at 36 which be more sacks than we have had since at least 2004 ESPN only went back that far and I didn't feel like looking deeper. UT sports goes back to 1994 but the pages load so slow. In fact every year Banks defense has put up 30+ sacks. Here is every season we had 30+ sacks since 2004

2004 33 Parys Haralson
2005 32 Parys Haralson
2014 35 Derek Barnett Curt Maggitt
2015 30 Derek Barnett
2016 30 Derek Barnett
2019 34 Darrel Taylor
2021 34 Jeremy Banks, Byron Young
2022 31 Byron Young

3 of those were Derek Barnett years 2 were the past 2 years....

This defense plays more snaps than any defense in the nation and as long and we have this offense it always will play a lot of snaps. So its going to give up a lot of points and yards over time no matter how good it is. In fact the better our offense runs the more snaps the defense has to take. Its simple math. The fact that they can produce as well as they do in context is amazing. Have you noticed how if you look at teams with the top rankes scoring and yards allowed defenses often have offenses that drag out the clock. Those defenses put up those good numbers because they are not playing as many possessions. Any defense that has to play a ton of snaps is gonna give up big plays... its the nature of the game. How you see through those numbers is are players producing stats during those times? After 5 games we have 22 sacks since 2004 we have had 7 years we has 22 or less sacks as a team and another 4 of 26 or less.

So assuming we get over 30 this year which is fairly likely. That would mean in the last 19 years 10 we have had under 30 and of the 9 over 30, 3 of those came under Tim Banks...... We have 8 games left (bowl) if we average 1 per game that means that in 19 years only 6 teams have gotten more and it would be Tim Banks' worst one.

Leading the conference and 13th in the country in yards per play allowed.

Let's see how the defense does against the next 3. If they go 2-1 without getting embarrassed, I'm pretty close to getting back onboard the Banksmobile.

I still don't like Martinez. Probably never will. He's living off of the front 7 right now. It is what it is.

Go Vols.

If not for adequate DL pressure, even the best DB on the field will be exposed.

Good/Above Avg DE pressure + good DB = really good pass defense.

The greater the DE pressure/squeeze the better the pass defense

0ne doesn't really work without the other.

Agreed. It's the DC's job to find that balance.

If the DB coach isn't holding up his end, then it makes life tougher for the DC.

UT's front 7 appears to be solid this year. So it is reasonable to expect the DB's to "improve" as well, right?

I know Hadden is the best DB in all of football this week...so what happened in Gainesville when he showed up with T-Rex arms?

There's my point...give Martinez a solid front 7, and his DB's look good. Give him anything less, and the UT secondary is wet tissue paper for any QB with a room temperature football IQ.

Ron Zook...for all his sins...says "hey".

I'm in wait and see mode on Banks. Martinez? Let's see if we can get UGA to hire him.

Go Vols.

Shane Beamer acknowledged that Tennessee's defense completely tricked Spencer Rattler on key play

Carolina’s Oline was terrible. We’ve played two sec teams with mixed results. Dominant against Carolina who had no Oline and entirely suspect vs Florida who’s not a great offense either.

It actually doesn't make me scratch my head. As per my previous assessment, it's exactly what I expect. A few missed plays that might be eliminated with just a couple more paymakers. The Florida game wasn't nearly as bad as some seem to think. Misplayed the long run, missed a couple of plays that would have stopped the long drives, and gave them the ball at the 9. 26 first half points that could easily have been half that. 83 yards or some such in the second half. It was the offense that let us down.

The most frustrating part of this defense is that they will make great plays on 1st and 2nd down and then just decide to leave guys wide open for pitch n catch on 3rd and long. It’s like they get a team to 3rd and 14 and just think the job is done and then get embarrassed.
I don't have sack totals by situation, and penalties aren't included either, but here are the 3rd down passing totals by situation:
3rd and 10+ there have been 17 pass attempts and 2 first downs allowed.
3rd and 7-9, 14 attempts, 3 first downs.
Runs in those same situations:
3rd and 10+, 10 attempts, 1 first down.
3rd and 7-9, 6 attempts, 1 first down.

So, no, 3rd and long has not been a problem.
