I think by the time these tournaments are over you can add Dalton Knecht
I had a hard time not adding Dalton, but kinda based this on multiple years. He’s no doubt one of my favorites as was Houston, Tony White, Reggie Johnson just to name a few.

I think you could do a pre 3 point and shot clock < 1985 team and > after team, the todays game is a total different game. They also don't call walking if you're fast and athletic and added the Euro step and you have to set up a tent in the 3 second lane to get a violation, the game evolved to more like NY city street ball.
1986 first 3 point shot in NCAA
shot clock added 1985 added first 45 seconds then evolved to 30 now

Would love for somebody to Photoshop a picture of Ernie and Dalton standing next to each other, as I think they would be incredibly similar. Watching Ernie in person all those years in Stokely, I think he might be a tad bit larger, but along with Bernard King of the volunteers, These are my all-time favorite, three players, All 3 have/had the ability to change a game’s outcome.

The top four are clearly King, Grunfeld, Ellis and Houston. They are on a whole level above the rest. I can’t tell you who the fifth is. So many equivalent candidates. I can’t ever put a one year player with that group. I also don’t see how there could be two additions one day that would knock out one of those four. Maybe in one of you youngsters lifetime.

Who's the point guard on these all-time teams? Johnny Darden? Before my time really, but probably so, given he's our career assists leader and it's not close. Who else?

Ernie Grunfeld
Legit question, because he's another one of those obvious legends who played before my time and I just don't know. Did he ever play the point? All the websites I've ever read said he was a shooting guard, and I've got zero memory to tell me hey that guy could dish the rock.

And also... Zakai Zeigler has entered the chat. Here's our all time best seasons for assists:

Rodney Woods: 227 ('74-'75)
Johnny Darden: 221 ('76-'77)
Jordan Bone: 215 ('18-'19)
Johnny Darden: 192 ('77-'78)
Tyrone Beaman: 184 ('82-'83)
Bill Hann: 173 ('68-'69)
Dane Bradshaw: 165 ('06-'07)
Johnny Darden: 164 ('75-'76)
Kennedy Chandler: 161 ('21-'22)
Zakai Zeigler: 161 ('22-'23)

ZZ is at 165 so far this season, so he's about to be one of two PGs (with Darden) to own more than one season in our best ever for assists.

Grunfeld played the point for the Kansas City Kings in the NBA during an improbable little playoff run they had back in the early ‘80s. I remember watching those games and thinking I can’t believe that is Grunfeld bringing the ball up. He did well and got a national media coverage moment out of it.

To me it's tiers.

BK exists on his own tier.

Then Ernie/Ellis a in the next tier.

Then Houston, White, Lofton, Johnson, Widby, and Williams would be my 3rd tier.

Knecht at 3 years here doing what he is this season probably lands in tier two. But if he only stays one, he'll be in a 3/4 tier with guys who had exceptional single seasons imo.

Yep. 1983. He also backed up the point and wing with the Knicks a couple of years later when Bernard was there. Of course that's why I have him at point in the all time team. Knecht has replaced Houston at the other guard slot...on my team

I remember the “dirt dauber” as John Ward use to call him. Definitely a baller.

Alan Houston’s dad was his coach. No a lot of other high level talent so Alan shot a majority of the shots. His dad wanted the highest draft pick he could get him.
Still a great shooter.

Too bad Wade couldn’t recruit like he did at Louisville. It’s sad that Allan didn’t have a stronger cast around him. Wasted talent at UT.

Wade was making more money with his Louisville based trucking company and never gave UT 100%. Allan would often run practices.

Not surprising the top 2 were during the King/Grunfeld era. We averaged over 80 too, with neither a shot clock nor 3 pt line

I think that Bertelkamp might have the all-time UT single NCAAT game record. 17 assists maybe? Give it to Ernie. Give it to Bernie. Give it to Reggie. Give it to Mike Jackson.

Bertlekamp didn't have that game with those guys.

He would have with Reggie. They’re in the same class. And probably with Howard Wood.

Bertelkamp only had his freshman year with E&B (and MJ). Then he was on the ill fated interim season with Wettig. And then his last 2 years with Devoe.

His record might have even happened in the 1979 SECT.
