'19 TN ATH Adonis Otey (ARK Commit 8/1/18)

There's a reason that he committed in the 1st place. What changed that dynamic? Ranking? Attention from other schools? The pride to see how many offers he can get? Bag Man with great incentives for the fam?

I'm not surprised. Very few kids commit as early as he did and stay committed. It does happen but not as much as it should.

"I've been getting a lot of interest and I want to take other visits and I didn't feel right that I would do that while I was still committed," Otey said. "I'm still young and it's still early so I feel like I might have rushed into things a little bit."

"I'm a Tennessee boy and that connection is still there," Otey said. "I just want a chance to re-evaluate things and take more time to make sure the decision I made is the right one."

"I think I did well there and it has helped me realize that I belong in the discussion with those top guys," Otey said. "Schools have been reaching out and I just want to take my time and take some visits and go from there."

"Committed to get other offers"

Current Blackman starter when Otey committed. Didn't rule out that he ends up a Vol but said he would never stay committed until he graduated.

I mean something made him say I want to commit to UT. I can see myself playing there. To, I'll keep them in mind going forward in my recruitment. I know kids commit and decommit all the time, but with all the momentum as of late with the commitments from '18, '19, '20 classes, he wants to decommit. The class will be fine with or without him. We miss on recruits all the time and the staff still finds talent that wants to be here to replace them.

Thats why you dont take commitments from players two years out. Waste of time.

Newt I totally agree and this is what i said and got talked crazy to. Its a waste of time to accept a commit for a kid with 2 ir 3 yrs left. Too much goes on, but at least he was hinest and said he wasn't comfortable taking visits with his current commitment in place. We try to teach respect and integrity. For example he went to Ole Miss after committing and did an interview. I thought he got arrested the way Buck dug into him. I honestly think he'll be a Vol in the end as he loves UT and is very close to others in the program.

Meh.

Better to take the commitment than burn bridges by denying it.

You can keep a good relationship with a player and still not take a commitment. Its real simple, especially if you have a policy that supports it. You just tell them that you want them to play more and be sure first. Once their junior year is over and you still want to commit then lets do it. I wonder what the number is for decommits when the player commits before their junior year? I bet it is well over 50%. I would argue that a player decommiting leaves a worse taste in their mouth and the backlash it generates makes it harder for that school to get the recommit.

Never know how a recruit would react to being told no, no matter how you phrase it.

I don't see how it hurts to accept a commitment.

Like de1 said, I do respect the fact that he was honest about decomitting because he didn't feel right about taking visits otherwise.

The Max Wrays of the world would revel in Tennessee not "allowing them to commit". Guess we shouldn't have let Cade Mays commit last year?
