'20 TN ATH Reggie Grimes (Oklahoma commit)

Rivals rankings:
1)They start with which schools offer and number of offers.
2)If a kid participates in their camp they receive a bump. If not they get a decrease in rankings.
3)If a kid commits to a certain school I.E. Bama or Ohio State, they get an additional bump. If they commit to a school like UT they get penalized in ranking
🤔 That there.... is sound logic

I’m not sure what events have happened since the last update so this could be a moot point. But it’s likely that Bailey didn’t “drop” per say, but that Rivals saw 3 or 4 kids that impressed them and passed him. Of course without seeing him play idk how you compare him to the kids who passed him but rivals opinion of Bailey hasn’t really changed, they just found others they liked and bumped.

The big question is why. Why is it that recruits get bumps up with Bamas offer?
History.

They've watched guys that they've given 4/5* to go to UT and other programs and do very little. They see guys going to Bama and winning championships. The recruiting sites do not have the manpower to do extensive research on every player. College programs have thousands on staff plus consultant recruiting services that help them evaluate players.

In the end, some programs prove to more accurately predict how players will perform than others. The consumer recruiting sites like Rivals and 247 are smart to use that as part of their evaluations.

Still trying to figure out why Aiken performed so much better but was so much lower rated?

Aiken had never played football until last season. To understand why Bryan wasn't rated you have to understand how the recruiting rankings work.. They find these guys, usually by the time they are freshman, some times sophomores and they have a temporary rating system. They see what offers they bring in, they see how they play their junior season, they see what camps they attend, etc. and they give them a ranking. It is a good system, and a ton of work goes into it, but it isn't fool proof.

If a guy like Bryan doesn't play football until he is a senior he is already past the point where any of the services will care to go back and rank him even if they find him, which Rivals did. They almost wrote a story on him when they went to see Reggie at Rossview.

Even the P5 colleges already have their recruiting classes in order by the time these guys are seniors. Think about this time last year and the head start the Tennessee, Alabama, Georiga, etc. coaches had on the 2019 class already in terms of offers sent, guys scouted, whatever, and then think about the fact that Aiken was not even playing football until months later. That's the only reason Bryan Aiken wasn't ranked. If he had played all four years he would have been a five star, top 20 player in the country. I have zero doubts about that.

Reggie and Pruit aren’t all that close trust me. They dont know each other well at all other than being teammates, they didn’t run in the same circle. Reggie homeboy was Shaun Alexander he came home to Nashville with him often. With that being said if Lil Grimes has a commitable offer to Alabama he’s going to Alabama. Lil Grimes has a lot of work to do, he fast very athletic but hasn’t been able yet imo to put it all together on the football field. Right now he’s a better offensive player than defensively. I’m truly rooting for the kid lve known the whole Grimes family very well they are some really good peoples.

Lol.. Hey man, you are correct about a few things. I grew up with Reggie in the Madison area went to school with him for middle and high school. During those days Hunter's Lane was a good school overall run by Dr. Willams, most of the Jrs and Sr's parents were able to buy them cars. I remember Reggie never had a vehicle of his own, he would caught ride with friends. His freshman year though at Alabama I remember him coming to several of Hunters Lane football game driving his brand new Crimson color Toyota Avalon. I also saw Shaun with him a couple times hanging out in the locker room after our games. The Grimes family are some great people I was closer to his younger brother who played Quarterback for us. I still see Reggie several times a year and I can tell you that his love for Alabama runs deeply through his veins. I would be very hard for me to see his son going any place else! Additionally, as others have mentioned his son is very athletic but he has a lot work to do to hold that 5 star rating.

LOL all he has to do is commit to bama.

If he was a DT, sure. but at DE your job is pretty simple.

he played a lot lb too per Callahan. Callahan dismissed HS stats as the greatest metric because of this and other things. He may have a point, go look at maxpreps and there are kids with 30, 40 TFLs who don't have d1 offers.

Much better players out there.

This kid may get some time as a TE in Tuscaloosa while down there. But honesty we need to sign better players if we're ever to get back to glory

Let's not kid ourselves here. If this kid was a UT lean instead of a Bama, we'd be thrilled. No, he's not a refined football player yet, but he's a freak athlete with 4.5 speed and huge upside. Let's see how his senior season plays out.

I’m sorry but I can’t see a kid whos not dominating in high school being a dominant player in college. Tennessee has had more than their share of “looks like Tarzan, plays like Janes” over the years. It’s time someone else gets their share.
He’s rated high because his dad is Bama alum and a lean. He’s not can’t miss
