'22 TN DT Walter Nolen (Ole Miss)

He was in as QB.

True. A lot of people say, we beat Pitt with Hooker, but he went into the game in either the first quarter or shortly into the second. He played most of the game.

I think the rationale is that had Hooker got all the 1st team reps in fall camp, and started the season getting the whole game against Bowling Green, then we win the game because he is a clear step up over Milton. I don't disagree with that possibility, but who knows, honestly.

Would have beaten Pitt with Hooker in as QB
Would of Beaten Pitt if Hooker doesn’t fumble or throw the interception.

Yes we got screwed by the refs on that 4th down where Hooker undisputedly made the line to gain, but saying that we would of beaten Pitt with Hooker is false, since he did play and had two critical turnovers.

Game was winnable because of him. He also was a factor in us not winning. That was the SECOND game of the season. Anybody really believe starting against Bowling Green and a few more snaps against Pitt makes him Mizzou level ready? He wasn’t sharp against Tennessee Tech or Florida either, but that’s where Heupel saw enough to go full in with him.

Later in the season he keeps that RPO to Wright that got stuffed on 4th and 1, and most likely scores.

Hooker was not playing at this level. He made massive strides. We didn’t see this version of him until Mizzou and SC

You can't forget all the wide open receivers early in the game. Heupel had that game schemed up perfectly in the first quarter. I think it's fair to say that Hooker would've hit most of those plays and we would've been looking at another 14 points early in the game. That certainly would've been enough to make a difference, and Pitt might not have had as much fight had they gone down 21+ early in the game. It was a huge missed opportunity because of Milton's struggles.

I’d quibble with the “most” part. He didn’t exactly pick them apart. His biggest gainer was that quick out that Calloway housed.

Just remember the Georgia and Florida 3 stars we get are equal to or better than Tennessee 4 stars I promise.

Jeremy, that you?

Haha, but seriously, hearing that he just essentially refused to recruit the state of Tennessee was maddening, especially when guys like Woody Washington have gone on to be very solid players at P5 schools.

He threw a perfect pass to Warren down the field for a big gain. A lot of those plays early were wide open and hard to miss...unless you're throwing rockets like Milton. I have a hard time believing Hooker would've missed, even when he wasn't playing as well.

There were other things going on (e.g. terrible 4th down spot), but just to be clear, when people say we would have beaten Pitt with Hooker, this is what they mean:

Edited to add: I am not trying to pick on Milton and would love for him to have success here. But Heupel and Golesh called the touchdown play several times in the first quarter and the throws just weren’t there.

Lol I remember watching these in real time…. Ugh all I could think about was how many yards was he going to over throw them lol 😂 the commentators said something too.

Imagine if Milton would of hit some of those… he would of been our starter all year. Can’t believe he just doesn’t have it in game…. How can you have absolutely zero accuracy on the long ball I don’t get it

Hooker entered the Pitt game down 17-13 midway thru the 2nd quarter following a Joe Milton sack and fumble in which Milton was injured. Hooker led a Tennessee team thru the rest of that game that was outscored 24-21. He made some mistakes, and it is impossible to say whether Tennessee would have had enough additional success with Hooker thru the first 1.5 quarters to change the outcome, but he was immediately an upgrade over Milton even with the 2 TOs.

At the end of the day, our defense gave up 27 2nd Q points, which certainly didn't help, and the majority came on drives of...
11 plays/92 yds
5 plays/75 yds
9 plays/75 yds

Rivals.com - Fact or Fiction: Tennessee still has a chance at Walter Nolen

Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney along with national recruiting analysts Sam Spiegelman and Ryan Wright, and Austin Price from Volquest.com tackle three topics and determine whether they believe each statement is FACT or FICTION.
-Rivals

Price’s take: FACT. Sure they do. I’ve said for months that the recruitment of Nolen was like a rollercoaster and it will come as no surprise to anyone if it has one more big turn. Texas A&M is very much in the best spot but anytime you have a committed prospect visiting his in-state school just before signing day it is worth taking notice of in some form or fashion. Nolen and his family could easily have shut things down but they are electing to take one more trip to Tennessee after he plays in the state championship game on Friday night.
