'18 TN OL/DL Cade Mays (Transfer)

I didn't realize Mays was number 10 overall on 24/7 & number 9 overall on rivals.

5 star on 24/7 & 4 star on rivals. Assuming he'll get his 5th star from rivals whenever they do their next rankings.

What's even more sad he's not the only 5* OT from Tenn

Talent in the state of Tennessee is on the way up. As long as Butch doesn't screw things up, we should be set up to be a perenial contender over the next few years.

You know, so many people said Akers "did it right" when it came to his recruiting because he was so secretive and kept his cards hidden. Akers had a few thousand posts. This kid knew what he wanted to do and did it. He wanted to be a Vol and he decided and didn't play for any drama. THAT is doing it right IMO. Gonna love watching him play on Saturdays.

But what if you don't know what you want to do?

That's fine. But let's acknowledge that doing it right doesn't mean keeping everyone guessing. It means being honest with yourself and others.
I don't think Akers was dishonest. I think Hubbs and co read a little bit too much into the info they were given and gave fans hope. I would say most looking at the situation saw we had little to no chance.

That's the vibe I got as well.

Shepherd was the only one of our guys on 247 who was willing to put in a CB pick for Akers to UT, the others always predicted FSU.

Then the day after Akers committed Brice got all butthurt about it and called it an upset because we had his mama in our corner.

I've been following recruiting for a while now (7 or so years) and I've recruited kids to a university. It's very clear that if a kid takes OVs, and your school isn't one, their shouldn't be hope. Hubbs and co should've known better. The staff member who told them he was confident just a day or two before his announcement should've known better.

They had more info than us and the glimmer of hope turned them mad to not see that he was probably going to FSU, and Tennessee wasn't even the backup choice.

It is what it is, it's all done with now.

On a thread related note, Cade is easily a top 10 type of player in the '18 class. Somehow we've had some good OL commit to us. Guys like Jones, Boulware, Smith, Richmond were wanted by the majority of SEC schools.

Outnumber OL future is certainly bright. If we can keep them healthy and develop them, it should become a strength of the team in over the next 2-3 years.

Staff has done a great job landing some highly coveted guys and sprinkling in more lowly rated, high upside guys.

There's been a lot of speculation over whether Smith can contribute next year, where, how fast, etc, but the one thing that is certain with Smith (and maybe Mays too, depending on how well our depth develops by 2018), is that he'll be able to push other guys and provide depth we can have confidence in.

My saying I respected the way Mays handled his business wasn't meant to say Akers was dishonest. I was commenting on the fan reaction I suppose. So much praise for the way Akers handled his and none really for Mays. I though Mays showed every bit was much character and maturity as Akers with a lot less fanfare. And Mays us every bit as highly rated and desired as Akers. Giving praise to one athlete doesn't mean I am accusing another of anything.

Commitments from big time guys that go down to the wire almost always make one fanbase or another feel scorned though.

If a kid commits early and shuts it all down, not so much.

He was 6'5" as a freshman so if he has grown at all you almost have to put him at OT or else the QB won't be able to hit any crossing routes.

I hear this a lot. Aren't the linemen broken down in their stance for most of a play anyway? Just thinking the effective height of a 6'5 blocking lineman is probably 6'0 or less if he's using good pad level.
