I think too many get enamored with the statuesque 6’4”+ guys. It helps to have that height but by no means does it make it a requirementI don't disagree, but there was a stigma against QBs roughly that height, or less, for a little bit and how they could translate in the NFL. I should have said "not considered short..."
Agree. There was a time when QBs were thought to have to be ~6-3, or taller, and be able to stay in the pocket and make throws down the field. Guys like Doug Flutie, Mike Vick, etc., were considered anomalies for their lack of size and ability to make things happen outside of the pocket. Even Randall Cunningham, who met the requisite size, stuck out with his ability to be a dual-threat. Guys like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson were later NFL picks because of concerns about their height, and those are pretty recent examples. The NFL is changing and coming around to the idea of athletes, regardless of size, being able to play the position and win witho both their arm and their legs. Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, all fit that new model.I think too many get enamored with the statuesque 6’4”+ guys. I know. Errybody wanted that 6’5 prototype and would settle for 6’4...until those pygmies outplayed them and locked up the position for 10+ seasons. I remember when 5’7 Joe Morris was a radical second round pick at RB...until he quickly outplayed 6’1 first rounder Butch Woolfolk and became their fixture in the backfield. We like science and numbers until they don’t add up.I don't disagree, but there was a stigma against QBs roughly that height, or less, for a little bit and how they could translate in the NFL. If you read thru the past two pages, a rather innocuous discussion about whether he may/may not grow another inch turned into a defense discussion about his height. I don't recall anyone questioning his height or ability to play at his current height. He's just fine and his height will not be the thing that makes or breaks him at the next level. Not sure why Ty's height is being questioned. Salter is shorter than him. If Ty's height is a problem (it's not) then Salter's height is a problem (it's not).
If that dude is 6’2, I’m 6’8..NFL QBs shorter than Simpson:
-Russell Wilson
-Drew Brees
-Kyler Murray
-Tua Tagovailoa
-Baker Mayfield
-Gardner Minshew
-Jalen Hurts
-Tyrod Taylor
The same height (6’2)
-Aaron Rodgers
-Deshaun Watson
-Lamar Jackson
-Dak Prescott
-Jimmy Garappolo
-Mitch Trubisky
Stereotypes about physical attributes of players is relevant. Net result...it doesn’t matter. I remember us doing that kind of stuff on here.If you read thru the past two pages, a rather innocuous discussion about whether he may/may not grow another inch turned into a defense discussion about his height. hubbsNow let’s shift gears to Ty Simpson. The Vols need to win and perform better on offense but they are in a very good spot. It wouldn’t surprise to see him in Knoxville for the final two home games in November and December. Simpson is very comfortable in Knoxville.
This my be the homer in me but AP on the mailbag podcast was talking about Salter and and the QB position in 2021. He then went on to mention Ty and then said something about maybe landing another high profile QB in the 2021 class and then said or transfer QB.hubbs
Late night posting will cause you to think too much into itThis my be the homer in me but AP on the mailbag podcast was talking about Salter and and the QB position in 2021. He then went on to mention Ty and then said something about maybe landing another high profile QB in the 2021 class and then said or transfer QB.
I know there was talk about the potential for Ty to reclassify and it almost seemed as if AP nearly slipped up in the podcast because then Rob chimes in with something like, you mean a high profile transfer?
Thinking too much into it maybe.....
Ty Simpson is simply just a must get. That's over said a ton but this one case you can't screw it up. Probably the best QB to ever come out of the state of TN, you stopped trying to get JT Daniels to to satisfy him, it would be a pretty big L if he goes to Clemson. Think we are still the favorite, gotta show some promise the second half of the season.
I know there was talk that he would look at depth charts but Clemson brought in a true FR who was the #2 QB in the class (#1 pro-style) and overall #10 player in the country yet he was worried about a transfer coming off a serious injury that had less eligibility left?
That math don’t check out.
But also was it stated somewhere we stopped pursuing JT Daniels to appease Ty? It doesn’t make much sense to stop pursuing a transfer to appease a recruit who MIGHT come to your school.
If that is true, it's some weak-minded bologna. This staff isn't in a position to turn down talent in the present for a shot of potential talent in the future, especially when that future talent is now possibly concerned with our present offense. It can't be both ways. The idea that Simpson was the motivating factor behind us pulling out of the Daniel's pursuit and the previously implied idea that he (Simpson) wants to be the only QB in his class at the school he chooses tells me he is scared to compete for the job. There was some kind of interview that basically implied it. You can find the details back in this thread somewhere. And I've heard multiple people seem to confirm it
