'19 TN WR Kendrell Scurry

Its all on Butch. When he fired Lawson, the injuries went through the roof. Coincidence? No way.

We supposedly had a huge injury problem before that. Remember Gaulden, Hall and Marcus Jackson in the same offseason? It’s blatantly obvious in hindsight that Szerszen was a mistake, but many were calling for Lawson’s head before that. I noticed the amazing physical transformation in returning players in Lawson’s first 6 months on the job and Emanuell Moseley went from 160-180 very rapidly (maybe credit Allison Maurer a lil there) so I never afixed blame there. I thought we just had a bad run of luck...which happens. Last few years, Bama has lost a huge number of games played at the linebacker position. But as a 5 year retrospective, SOMETHING was contributing to our sheer totality of lost games. I think it had something to do with practices and how they were handled. Too intensely repetitive in the beginning...too light and hands off at the end. We have better teachers who know how to field a team now...hope it manifests itself with better luck.

Pruitt said he couldn't believe how the team practiced and trained under the previous staff. He was shocked that Butch let the players decide how much their bodies could take and how much they should workout or practice. Pruitt changed everything, and the players are already bigger and stronger, with greater endurance. They work out harder and we've had no major injuries.

Note that this happened after Lawson was let go as I understand it. Butch's first couple years were not like this. He dropped the ball big time in the S&C department after Lawson was terminated, as we all know.

Actually, problems started escalating in 2015, until Lawson was distanced from Butch and the football program in early 2016. He continued to work with other UT sports until he was terminated that summer. Butch simply couldn't stand up to some players-- he didn't have their respect and he lost control. Dooley had the same problem. Pruitt does not.

Why was Lawson let go in the first place? I don't remember.

He disagreed with Butch about how team workouts should be handled. Butch wanted a less strenuous S&C program to avoid injuries. Lawson didn't agree and he didn't like Butch allowing some players to cut back or skip when they felt they didn't need to work out or got too tired.

JRM and other team leaders approached Butch and basically informed him that they hated Lawson and preferred Szerszen...who had been conducting off-season workouts.

Butch came from Cincinnati. Pruitt came from Alabama. Huge discrepancy.

Point is... I've seen this several times before and not just with HC changes. How many S&C coaches has UT had since Fulmer? With every change... the players were supposedly getting developed SO much better than before.

I'll get excited when injuries drop to the normal range and the team shows it on the field. Until then... just more words.

As for coming from Bama... Dooley came from Bama by way of La Tech. Sunseri came from Bama.

I'm as critical of Jones as anyone but there's no necessary correlation in your argument. In fact, there are programs that focus as Jones supposedly did on speed over bulk... that win lots of games.

It’s a good thing when the players don’t like the strength coach

Don't think Dooley ever coached at bama.

Yes. I apologize. I was thinking about how working under Saban was such a big part of his "resume".

I'm not saying Pruitt won't be better in many ways. I'm just saying I am skeptical of this kind of talk considering how many times we've gone through it all the way back to when Kiffin replaced Fulmer. Supposedly the S&C program was suddenly and dramatically improved then... and every time there's been a change since.

Jones ever the used car salesman really played the before/after pictures up.

Some players didn't like Lawson because they said he worked them too hard and was very strict. They would've despised Pat Summitt.

Dooley never coached a day at Bama. Nevermind...I've been Sleegroed.

I get what yer saying, was just pointing out that Dooley didn't coach there. I'm not gonna try to argue with BVS either, like you said, we'll find out in time. I'm just choosing not to let my BVS keep me from being excited and expecting an improved team this year. I let my BVS keep me down last year and it didn't really make the experience any better. Just made for some pretty apathetic game days.

If fans are determined to be miserable? By all means, PROCEED. Just wish they didn’t feel the need to keep us updated. :pinch:

Kiffin was a good coach and a good hire... eagle-eye hindsight, obviously... it was a dick move leaving like he did for a slightly more high-profile program, but he was a good coach... I never liked the Dooley or Butch hires from day one, Butch brought in some decent recruiting classes, but he was a terrible head coach... His clock management at the end of games alone should have been a fireable offense.

Pruitt carries himself like a veteran HC... cool, calm, collected... feels like a good hire... and he's got Fulmer to sponge from if he needs it...

I see good things happening quit being a hater :)
