‘23 TN WR Nathan Spillman (Tennessee)

On 247 they have a little symbol for players that means "early signee". (As opposed to the little clock that means "early enrollee) Strangely, Spillman is the only one of our commits that does not have that symbol next to his name. So it'll be interesting to see if he does indeed sign next week. Is there any reason the coaches would make him wait until February to sign? I've assumed all along the main reason for taking him is his brother.

I don't know that you do something that could greatly impact your recruiting at Lipscomb Academy in a negative way. Too much talent coming out of that school, and we're building a pipeline.

I'm not saying we are. I was just curious why his was the only name without that early signing symbol?

I was watching Millbrook vs Carrolton for Georgia 6A state Championship There's a 5'11 160 lbs WR for Millbrook wears #4. Makhail something...

anyway he had a good game. But I was looking at his season stats.
I saw that he had 5 catches 130 yds and 2 Tds against Milton, GA.
This kid is committed to Eastern Michigan....

Nate Spillman had 1 catch for 17 yards against Milton. His teammate Sherrill had a TD and i think 80 yards. And some rushing yards. Sherrill is a Vandy commit.

Now that we have Carter with Smith and Telander, I'm not worried about offending a still developing Edwin Spillman . Edwin isn't as good as the 3 we have coming in.

Nate Spillman doesn't belong in this class.

The issue isn't offending Edwin. Kaleb Beasley is committed to us and is tight with the Spillman's as well. Lipcomb will also continue to have highly rated P5 prospects for years to come. Recruiting is built on trust and relationships. You don't mess up a potential pipeline by dropping a kid in the 11th hour. There's been ample time to let him seek other options (if that's something they even want to do) prior to a week before signing day.

I don't waste my time with crap like that...

Jesus.

Anyone can tell the kid doesn't even belong in the SEC much less a rising Tennessee program. His brother MIGHT be the top guy for 2024 in-state. But he himself is not as good as 3 guys that we have coming in this year. Not to mention Elijah Herring is already there and the are other good ILB prospects for 2024 that UT is in on.

Nate had a D1 QB and was still absolutely pedestrian for an SEC commit..

You have no analysis as to why he deserves a spot in the most explosive offense in college football.

I agree.
With that said...
I've also been explaining to people on here that talent is everywhere now. And that's why you cant trust star rankings. Leacock and Spillman were of similar rank 4 months ago. Yardage too. My point being we have to get the best players and while Lipscomb is a powerhouse, I'd still want cherry pick the best players from wherever i find them vs pipeline.

With THAT said lol. I still want Edwin as he will become good one day based off his motor alone. Beasley is a definite take all day. And yes, trust in coaches is crucial

But Nate will ride that pine for sure in Knoxville...

I wish you recruited for one of our rivals. By the second year the high school coaches wouldn't even let you in.

I didn't watch enough of their games this year to fully know why his numbers dropped, and why he wasn't targeted much this season. His junior year he was used almost exclusively as a vertical threat. He has great size and above average speed. I agree that, on the surface, keeping him this late in the process is a head scratcher. But.... sometimes things are deeper than they appear on the surface. Most of those things we are never privy to. This was also Edwin's first year playing inside. I would expect a significant improvement in year 2.

Yeah he's an average three star, but who cares? For one, we can make most receivers look good, and if he turns out a solid player he'll be average 3 star number 1000 that turned out to be good.

I won't presume to speak for the staff but in some ways they seem to be a bit more strategic than past staffs. Some of these in state relationships have wide impact. This may be one of them.

But concerning production and recruiting bona fides... It was presumed that Elijah Herring was recruited just to get his brother. But he got some PT and looked good. Comparatively Harrison had a pretty poor offer list and was rated a lower 3*. He worked his way onto the field. Only UT and Arkansas offered Nimrod and Arkansas didn't seem very serious. He reportedly moved ahead of others and looked good for a Fr.

The kind of recruiter that UT needs to pull the program all the way up is going to find talented guys who don't necessarily "shine" as HS players. Maybe the coaches are trying to figure out the diplomacy here... or the cost/benefit analysis. Or maybe they think he's a raw talent with potential to excel past the more polished guys.

The one thing I can say is that this kid looks fast in his highlights. And as you and others have often pointed out, speed isn't something you can teach.

I have no info on his situation, but could it be he needs more credits to graduate before entering UT?

I agree.

You still need fast guys to play special teams. If he has the mentality to do this there you go he earns his time while learning WR position at SEC level. You never know how these things turn out. In CHRIST Alone.

He does until the he and/or the staff thinks he does not. It is just possible the issue that needs discussing is the underutilization of this player by his HS staff. Our staff has access to camp performances, one on one interviews, and other input that arrogant talent valuators are just not privy too. You have no idea what roles they have in mind for him.

In 2018 a kid rated lower than a 3 star signed and will be leaving us this year pretty high on the NFL draft boards. We have had several can't miss WR prospects that have. Let the staff do their thing and wait till a guy gets on the field in practice or games, here or elsewhere, then assess his college viability and his relative worth to all of this year's signing class members.

Spillman's final numbers this year (13 games): targeted 52 times, caught 25 for 316 yards (12.6 avg) & 3 TDs...1 carry for 2 yards...1 kickoff return for 8 yards.

Cedric Tillman only caught 37 passes his senior year, also playing for a loaded high school team. He was also an overlooked recruit. And Tillman rhymes with Spillman. I'm just sayin', y'all. I'm just sayin'...
