i dont like it necessarily. no other top program is going after him. and this means we wont even be in the wilder race as we had previously become because he wants to play rb and assuming we are trying to get justice hayes and d arnett as a package...i dont know. i just didnt really think he was a take at this time.

I had read in the recruiting forum that Alabama and Notre Dame had offered as well as Wisconsin and Pitt.

Wilder wasn't coming here.

If we were taking one RB I would like to get Hayes but there is no guarantee that he would have chosen UT anyway.

ESPN Eval on Tom Smith from Apopka, FL RB. NO AL offer FWIW.

Smith should see his recruiting stock rise during the spring evaluation period; aside from lacking great top-end speed, he is a complete back and physically ready to make the jump to the college level. Has very good size and a frame to continue filling out to the 215-pound range. A strong, downhill runner who hits the hole with good quickness and authority. What really impresses us is his shoulder lean and ability to run behind his pads for a taller back. Lower running base allows him see the cutback lanes quicker through traffic and displays more than adequate footwork and redirection skill to hit. Squares up quickly out of cuts to help power through arm tackles. Generates good downhill power and is very difficult to wrap up cleanly when he runs behind his pads. Determined runner who keeps his stronger legs and lower-body driving for extra yards; he is a finisher who can move the pile and eventually wear down a defense. Seems to consistently fall forward and gain an extra yard or two. Balance, strength and ability to break first contact as a runner are his best assets. However, he is a bit stiff through the hips and lacks great suddenness and pick and dart ability coveted in a true zone runner at the next level. Gears down and gathers some when cutting. We did not see great lateral quickness or burst to the outside to become a perimeter threat versus faster pursuing college defenders. Projects best in downhill schemes but would still lack to see a bit more initial explosiveness. Our main concern may be his adequate top-end speed and difficulty trying to separate in the second level; appears to be a short-stepper without a second gear and great acceleration. That said, Smith is well-rounded and does a lot of things good not great. Will need to polish blocking skills but he is a potential three-phase back at the next level with his ability to move the chains on the ground and as a pass catcher in the screen game.

I think some are liking their chances with Justice Hayes more than the actual chance exists. Take the sure thing now, add Hayes if he's willing to come. Great players won't be scared off by a single "mid level" recruit IMO.

I'm sure we will still take Hayes if wanted to commit. Wilder isn't coming here, hopefully he goes to someone not in the SEC, but that doesn't look good.

He does have several big time schools listed, but we don't know how many have actually offered a him scholarship. In addition to the Yahoo link, Scout also listed Florida. Maybe the staff sees more potential than his rankings indicate. Got to give them their chance to see how everything works out. I think we only take 1 or 2 RB's with the other needs to fill. Our current backfield, with or without BB, has good potential, but hasn't proved anything so far.

Way to go get another WAC player
Posted via VolNation Mobile
And you would not take Boise St record the last few years. Lets be real, alot of the big names are not coming to UT after whats happened the last few yrs. Three coaches in three years. After Dooley has a couple yrs recruiting then it will happen. Until then get some players coach they up and lets play.

I'm sure that running backs are lining up to play behind our OL right now. Remember three stars is better than two. I'm going to be LMAO if this guy blows up this year and FSU or the Bammers jump all over him.
