Toney Williams

Toney is featured in today's TFP...
Toney Williams goes to high school in Georgia.
But don’t call the University of Tennessee’s newest football commitment a Georgian. He’ll correct you.

“I’m a Tennessee boy,” Williams said Thursday afternoon.
More specifically, Williams is a Chattanooga native, and most of his family still lives in the Scenic City. He didn’t move to Alpharetta, near Atlanta, until he was 13.

Since leaving Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts five years ago, Williams has blossomed into Milton High School’s 6-foot-1, 229-pound backfield bulldozer. He claims scholarship offers from Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Kentucky, North Carolina State, Mississippi State and Indiana, with Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Clemson still evaluating.

Williams said any non-Tennessee phone calls coming his way wouldn’t draw much interest.

“I’m probably only going to take one (official) visit, and that’s to Knoxville,” he said. “There was no point in waiting any longer to commit somewhere. I can’t see myself being anything else but a Volunteer.

“I love Tennessee’s history and tradition and facilities. They’ve always had great running backs and some great power backs.”

Milton coach Scott Walker said recruiters like Williams “because he can do a lot of things.” He said some schools like him at tailback while some see him at fullback and others like him at both spots

Some coaches would be tempted to try a 6-foot-1, 230 pound player with 4.6-second 40-yard dash speed at linebacker. Williams hopes not.

“Oh, I’m sure I’m a running back,” he said. “A big tailback ... but a tailback.”

Williams uses the same trainer as Jamal Lewis, a big tailback who spent three seasons at UT between Atlanta-area high school stardom and NFL success. “That definitely played a big part in my decision,” Williams said. Williams didn’t start watching much college football until he had moved to Georgia — “when I first thought I could get a scholarship, I paid it more attention,” he joked. He developed a quick interest in the Volunteers.

“Some people down here call me ‘Tennessee boy,’” he said. “That’s fine. I am a Tennessee boy. Thirteen years in Chattanooga, and soon I’m coming to Knoxville.

“I can’t wait to get up there and play Georgia. There’s so many Georgia fans down here that ... I just can’t wait to play those guys.”

He is about the same size as Arian. He might be okay at RB. Wouldn't surprise me to see him move to LB though.

How are are you in Maryville and JC at the same time?

Dont sound like hes coming here to play LB. They may have other plans for him but he sure doesnt know it yet.

Im willing to wager that this kid ends up at LB

He might but I believe he will stay at RB or move to FB.

Clawson likes using 2 backs in the backfield at the same time. Having a power guy back there is tough to defend.

He sounds athletic though. Could probably excel at LB if he wanted to.

Great goal-line and short yardage back. Should make a good lead blocker as well. I can't wait to see him truck a UGA LB or DB on his way to the endzone.

Reportedly ran for 350 yards and 6 TD's tonight. Not sure how strong the competition was, but that is pretty impressive. He might stay at RB after all.

Kinda ironic that he is from Chattanooga and playing in Atlanta and Riggs was from Atlanta playing in Chattanooga. Speaking of Riggs, has anybody heard anything about his brother?

I love it when guys like Toney do this...maybe some of you will shut up about the damn stars...Toney is only three stars! Fulmer & Co surely don't know how to judge talent regardless of how many stars he has been annointed by some pencil pusher?!

Hell, now I want all 3 star players.

Oh yeah, how about the "this kid will only play LB or FB for UT" people. I don't want to see this kid without the ball in his hands, do you?
