Tony Basillio confirmed - Kevin Ware won't be released

it's extremely rare for a program to not give a release. tenn is the only program i'm aware of that does this.

from a post in this thread. Also there was a QB from Miami that wouldn't be granted a release to go to UT and I don't believe FSU would release Brandon Warren

We're not the only school that doesn't release players from LOIs. The LOIs are binding contracts.

UCF coach George O'Leary denies Louisville quarterback DaMarcus Smith release from letter of intent - OrlandoSentinel.com

In a scenario where he won't even meet with the new staff, he's not going to be playing for us no matter if we grant the release or not. Our only motivation to not grant the release at that point would be to try to stick it to the player, and I think that's unnecessary.

I agree

Thats because these sheep need to learn that its never about making a kid keep a commitment, but rather a selfish coach trying to have his cake and eat it too. Its holding a kid hostage, basically, and like you said, it makes the coach and program look very bad.

Exactly.

Well, how about making Ware honor his LOI, play this upcoming season and see if he likes it, if not, let him transfer and sit out his RS year, and then he's free to play ball at whatever school he chooses?? That's more than reasonable, since the majority of great players never use their RS years in basketball.

Martin was hired Monday. Not meeting with them until after the Final Four is asinine. Part of me hopes Ware and Jones listen to the pitch, then both say "Sorry I interrupted your search for a staff. I'll take my release now."

Uh oh we agree, martins first priority should of been speaking to the team and recruits. He can get a staff anytime, these kids are fickle and will bail leaving us with squat. I could be wrong but I believe this is the very first thing that Dooley did was meet with recruits and the team. Martin meeting with them this weekend is pretty weak IMO.

No argument that his first priority should have been meeting with current players and our recruits. No matter how well he can coach, he's going to need talented players to succeed.

Question: I thought that when a recruit has signed his LOI but then there is a coaching change the recruit automatically can go somewhere else without penalty? Can someone explain this to me.

For the record, Martin spoke to everyone on the team, except Tobias, on Sunday night. Tobias was not in town. He spoke with Ware and Jones on Monday.

That's never been the case. A couple of Cal's recruits at Memphis had riders to the LOI that they could leave if John did. The 'AA stepped in after that happened and put a rule in place that says such arrangements are null and void.

Gotcha thanks Hat...

Disregarding all other opinions, if I were Ware, I'd be pretty angry at the school that just sold me on a program while knowing what was about to happen. UT's policy is a joke if a recruit is deliberately lied to until he commits and then the school holds him to his word which was given based on a lie. He has never taken a class at UT and now the university is holding back a young man simply because it benefits them to do so. It is dirty. Any backlash is well deserved. We aren't dealing with the state of Kansas or Pulaski, TN here. ****ing with Ware could bite UT in the ass and it is just the wrong thing to do.

I meant that more of the staff might be present for Ware and Jones to talk to after final 4 rather than talking now.

The only thing I question is.These 2 kids had to know that Pearl wouldnt be back even though MH told them that Pearl would be back.I know it was a 50/50 chance but its a chance that these 2 kids took. But the bottom line is,the meeting with CCM isnt going to change their mind. They want out and thats all they are thinking about.Let them go if they dont want to be here. Its not like Pearl was sending players to the NBA anyways.

In other words, deny him the opportunity to play where he wants for 2 years. Brilliant.

I'm not so sure about that.

Ware will be released if he still feels indifferent about playing for Tennessee. Hamilton is giving Martin a chance to speak with Ware about the direction of the program, and whether or not he wants to be apart of it. If it doesn't go well, Martin will grant him his release. This is going to be one of the first real tests that Martin is going to have here at Tennessee, I hope he is ready.

Might be a silly question, but why does it seem that football recruiting is more strict than basketball? There is a big signing day in football and seems like bball recruits just kind of commit throughout the season. Not as much hoopla and seems like much more restrictions put on coaches with respect to contacting high school kids in football. Another question? I heard CCM mention both recruits on the radio yesterday by name? I thought they aren't supposed to do that? Sorry if elementary, just don't understand

They're not recruits anymore . . . they're signees, so that's why you hear them called by name. Also, there are two signing periods for basketball as opposed to just the one for football which may account for why it may seem more spread out.
