Top 3 worst plays in UT history

I understand, and I am nitpicking somewhat. But when asking people to arbitrarily pick the worst plays in the history of Tennessee football, that's a lot of history and I don't think the question can property be answered.

Other than a couple of references to games form the 60's and 80's, I think the better question would have been "Top 3 worst plays since Tennessee's 1998 championship season." And really, that would best define where this fan base is today.

Good point. That would have been a good criteria to work off of and don't think anyone would have struggled to think of 3 since then based on the responses so far.

If a subjective question is asked (where you're seeking someone's opinion) then any answer is correct. The fact that most posters are "younger" they're going to remember more recent plays.

My answer of the worst plays isn't more or less correct than any other poster's plays.

Yeah, I didn't even mention Gary Wright missing a 20 yd field goal that would have beaten bama on the last play of the game. Vols lost that one 11-10 back in '66...in Knoxville.

I was only a kid, but that one hurt a lot worse than Mt. Cody. You pretty much have to die to get that one out of your system.

I vaguely recall that '66 Alabama game. I remember much more vividly, however, this moment from the '69 'bama game, one that was illustrative of just how thoroughly we dominated the Tide on that day. We led 34-0 before 'bama added a couple of late touchdowns for cosmetic effect:

"Tennessee linebacker Steve Kiner chastised Alabama players for not playing better for Bear Bryant in the 1969 game at Legion Field. Former Tennessee assistant coach Bob Davis was there on the sidelines when it happened. Tennessee was ahead 34-0, and coach Doug Dickey was getting his first-line defenders out of the game.

"They had a play that ended right in front of us," Davis said. "Before he came to the bench, Kiner screamed at the Alabama players. He pointed to Coach Bryant and said, 'Look over there at that poor old man. He looks pitiful. Can you see him? You've let him down. You should be ashamed of yourselves.' " Tom Mattingly: SEC talk not for the faint of heart » GoVolsXtra

Other accounts also allege that Kiner added as a final stinging remark: "There was a time when those crimson jersies meant something."

If you're talking about worst play in terms of how awful it was by the player, it's Erik Ainge @ LSU in 2005 and its not even close.

Others that were terribad:

Desean Jackson's punt return in 2007
Adams's punt return in 2011
Botched double reverse in 2008ish with Kenny O'Neal
Clausen's fumble against Georgia in Neyland in 2003

3) 1990 blocked field goal Alabama. (Guy dropped dead 30' from me walking out of stadium.) never heard so many and still have not heard as many f hammers being thrown down walking out of a stadium even during the Volpression years of late

2) Ainge Pick 6 SEC Championship the beginning of the great Volpression

1) 13 men on the field the poster child moment of the most recent era

Worst in Person Moments:

3) Pick 6 called back vs. the Gators in 06. That puts us up 24-7. Ballgame. IMO it could easily have been a no call and if Ainge stayed healthy we are a legit National Title contender that season.

2) '03 Fumble vs. UGA. The second half of that game is probably a top 3 moment that I was completely disgusted with our football team.

1) '06 LSU last drive. Our defense looked like they were having purple drank, not their QB.

Not in Person: More than 3.

1. '00 Gaffney's "catch". Still pisses me off til this day. Such a let down after one of the great performances in UT history by Travis Henry and total domination of the game. Fulmer truly outcoached SOS that day with AJ Suggs as QB only to kick FGs. If only Clausen hadn't had elbow problems early in the season.

2. '01 UGA game. No one particular play, just the final drive. As someone said earlier...
F##K Larry Munson. I'll add David Greene and Pollack to that list as well.

3. The '96 Florida Game. I was 14, my neighborhood in Durham, NC, had been recently destroyed by Hurricane Fran. 13 trees down in the yard, 3 on the house. We didn't have power for nearly 2 weeks and we got it back just in time for the game. This was THE GAME. This is what we all had waited for. After several tough weeks this was our light at the end of the tunnel. Time to kick the Gators ass in front of the Largest Crowd in College Football history. Then SOS, Wuerfel, and Anthony set the tone w/ that 4th and 11 TD strike and we never recovered despite the final score.

That's a pretty good list. As much as UT dominated the LOS against UF in 2000 they didn't when it mattered most. All they needed was a 1st down and couldn't do it. Leverton's punt was great and UF drove all the way down the field.

No they don't. In 45 years of fandom, I have far more positive memories of Tennessee football than negative ones. We are simply mired in the most protracted down period since the late Battle-early Majors era.

There are probably a lot of people on this board who are college age or younger. They basically have no memory of the 90's, so the '04, '06 or '07 seasons are probably the BEST memories they might have of UT football.

When we lost in the last minute to Georgia, when David Green threw the TD and Larry Munson made his classless quote: We just steped on their face with a hobnail boot

I'm still angry over the quote and still think Munson was classless.....couldn't hold John Ward's jock strap...oh well Munson's now deceased....God rest his soul

1. The QB sneak with Ainge against ND - the one where Ainge got injured - completely transformed the late 2000s. It's the one play with the longest lasting ramifications for our Vols.

Ainge was hurt on a Hail Mary play at the end of the first half - not on a QB sneak.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL - Alabama Stuns Tennessee, 9-6 - NYTimes.com
Not sure that any set of plays in my history of watching hurt like this in the 1990 Alabama game:
Philip Doyle kicked his third field goal of the game, a 48-yarder as time expired, to lift Alabama to a 9-6 victory over Tennessee today in a Southeastern Conference defensive struggle.

Doyle's kick was set up when Stacy Harrison blocked a 50-yard field-goal attempt by Tennessee's Greg Burke with 1 minute 35 seconds to play. Burke, whose 51-yarder tied it with 10 minutes to play, saw his potential game-winner carom off Harrison's chest and bounce downfield.

Alabama took over at the Tennessee 37 and gained 7 yards in three plays before allowing the clock to run down to 4 seconds.

For me--that was the worst loss ever. I was living in Bham at the time and every Bammer fan down there knew that we were gonna kick their a*&^!

It was the absolute worst display of coaching by a UT staff ever! And I know that we just witnessed 3 yrs of CDD, sunseri, and all--but I don't even think we had a game plan that day. We just went into a shell and hoped for the best. I'm still ticked about it!

That was one of THE best UT teams ever. :salute:

Corey Anderson fumbling the ball out of the endzone at Alabama in 2005 that costs us the game. The DJ Hall push-off was almost as bad. Its either that one or us fumbling the ball at the goal line and Sean Jones picking it up and running it all the way back for a TD right before the half in 2003!!

1. Squibb/shank kickoff that led to the GA hobnail boot td (2001)
2. Gary Wright missed 20 yd FG at final horn, UT loses to bama 10-9 (1966)
3. Gaffney td "catch" according to ref Al Matthews (2000)

In my young lifetime:
1. Daniel Lincoln's game winning kick gets blocked by Terrence Cody.

2. Daniel Lincoln's extra point being blocked in the Music City Bowl, giving UNC a chance to get back in the game with just a field goal.
*sidenote: I was at that game, and right before the kick, I told my dad, "I hate when he lines up to kick. There's a good chance for a..." Kick blocked.

3. Erik Ainge's pick six pissing away the 2007 SEC Championship. I love Erik, but that was a bad decision and horrible playcalling for that drive.

The catch was just the icing on the cake. Letting them drive all the way down the field was the problem.

Nope. The worst part was failing to convert a 3rd and short on the drive before we punted it to them and then allowed them to drive it down the field. If the Vols convert that 1st down, the game would have been over.
